Rush made mentioned this week of a core sample that showed evidence of tropical remains from an Arctic sample. Here are the results of a similar study done by a federally funded organization that claims this has been happening for........ever.
Simulated three-dimensional structure of Earth's magnetic field, with inward (blue) and outward (yellow) directed field lines. Field lines extend two Earth radii from the core. The location of the core-mantle boundary is evident where the structure becomes complex
Those are great links.
Thanks....:)

The Bush-Rove Magnetic Pole Reverser is almost ready for its first test.
"What bullshit. Magnetic compasses have been in use for 600 years and in that time the Earth's magnetic north pole has barely moved. By this "reasoning," magnetic north would have by now moved to Korea."
Do you have a clue as to where the magnetic North Pole is today? Barely moved? Google the subject.
The last magnetic shift occurred long before there were Boy Scouts and planes.
Considering that planes and Boy Scouts steer by it, that's very reliable.

600 years in geologic time is short.
The geoligical record is clear. Magnetic reversals have occurred numerous times over geological time.
Sorry, no. The difference between magnetic and true is magnetic variation, not declination. Declination is the term used to describe the angle above the horizon of a celestial body. The difference beyween a mag heading and a compass heading is deviation. Thus: "Timid virgins make dull companions at weddings" -- or: True - add variation - mag - add deviation -- compass -- add west variation (and subtract east).
But the poles hardly reverse every 1,000 years as the article states. Sorry. Still wrong.
Reference to read later.
What? No it isn't produced by the atmostphere! It is created between the interactions of the SOLID iron core in the center of the Planet and the Molten Core that lies below the crust of the earth. The movements of the Magma and the turning of the core create the Magnetic Field of the earth.
It doesn't say that. Your reading comprehension skills truly do suck.

Nope sorry.
"Finally, the angle of the horizontal intensity with respect to the north geographic pole is the declination, also called variation in mariners' and aviators' jargon. In other words, declination is the angle between where a compass needle points and the true north pole."

But the poles hardly reverse every 1,000 years as the article states. Sorry. Still wrong. The article states:
Magnetic north heads south, and -- over about 1,000 years -- the field does a complete flip-flop. While the Oregon data is controversial, Earth scientists agree that the geological evidence as a whole -- the "paleomagnetic" record -- proves such reversals happened many times over the past billion years. The article does not say that the magnetic pole changes every 1000 years.
"Some reversals occurred within a few 10,000 years of each other," says Los Alamos scientist Gary Glatzmaier, "and there are other periods where no reversals occurred for tens of millions of years."
North Magnetic Pole could be leaving CanadaThe magnetic pole, which has steadily drifted for decades, has picked up its pace in recent years and could exit Canadian territory as soon as 2004, said Larry Newitt of the Geological Survey of Canada. If the pole follows its present course, it will pass north of Alaska and arrive in Siberia in a half century, but Newitt cautioned that such predictions could prove wrong. The erratic pole can jump around considerably each day, but migrates on average about 10 kilometers to 40 kilometers each year. Friend of navigators for centuries, beckoning compass needles from virtually every point on the planet, the North Magnetic Pole is distinct from the North Terrestrial Pole, the fixed point that marks the axis of the turning planet. The magnetic pole is currently 966 kilometers (600 miles) from the geographic one. Because the magnetic pole lies in the Arctic Ocean, scientists attempting to pinpoint its precise location must visit during a brief window in the spring. The North Magnetic Pole historically is resurveyed about once every decade. But Newitt and colleagues, who last studied the site in 2001, might attempt another trek in 2003 to investigate further its accelerated migration.

So what would the quickest be? Perhaps 30,000 years, maybe 80,000 years. Something like that.
It should be really hard to interpret that as every 1,000 years, but it obviously can be done.
