Iraqi Accuses U.S. of 'Daily' Attacks Against Civilians
NY Times ^ | June 2 2006 | RICHARD A. OPPEL

Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki lashed out at the American military on Thursday, denouncing what he characterized as habitual attacks by troops against Iraqi civilians.

As outrage over reports that American marines killed 24 Iraqis in the town of Haditha last year continued to shake the new government, the country's senior leaders said that they would demand that American officials turn over their investigative files on the killings and that the Iraqi government would conduct its own inquiry.

In his comments, Mr. Maliki said violence against civilians had become a "daily phenomenon" by many troops in the American-led coalition who "do not respect the Iraqi people."

"They crush them with their vehicles and kill them just on suspicion," he said. "This is completely unacceptable." Attacks on civilians will play a role in future decisions on how long to ask American forces to remain in Iraq, the prime minister added.

If this is how it is going to be then let's just pull out and leave them to their own devices with one caveat; the next time we come it will be with B-52s only.

The Haditha issue is such old news, I am beginning to suspect that something far more clever is going on here.

I wonder if Bush did not draw attention to this in order to sway Iraqi selections for internal govt posts such as defense.

This media issue is drawing Iraqi politicians out to say whatever looney things they may harbor in their hearts. In so doing, Americans and other key internal players can smoke out dangerous figures who might be aspiring to key posts and block them.

Just some wild thinking on my part.

Well, what do we expect. There isn't a country that we saved their butts or liberated that hasn't turned around a stabbed us in the back. We never learn. Fine, they want us gone...we're gone. They can clean up their own mess, and it is their mess.

This pathetic, lying ingrate. Our military should pull out now so this guy's expected life span competes with the average fruit fly.

CIC GWB had d*mn well better place a phone call to Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki and jerk this blank straight -

In no uncertain terms. The MSM along with other forces are blowing the current climate into a situation where CIC GWB needs to stand up and be firm.

Having questions about certain incidents is fine (from Maliki) but his tone here is completely out of line. 100% out of line and CIC GWB better find reason here to let this man know it.

Placating this BS will only cause more problems.

Were these comments made at a press conference or were they elicited by leading questions posed by unethical journalists seeking to disrupt the relationship between the Iraqi government and the United States?

I was for this operation 100% BUT if this is how they want to repay us then it is time to treat them like we would any other enemy.

wild thinking ...

more likely, this is becoming like the palestinian situation, a slow slide into accepting the unacceptable because the unreasonable are too irrational.

al-Maliki has got to complain loudly to have any home credibility. He'll weather the storm.

Yes, those American car bombs are getting out of hand.

If this is going to be the new Iraqi governments reaction in the future then I don't want another American Soldier or Marine to spend another minute there.

I count two outrages in the New York Times reporting. One is the pasting of that car-runs-through-the-checkpoint tragedy in the middle, as if it in some way is part of a pattern of soldiers killing civilians. That is beyond yellow. The second is not remarking the incredible hypocrisy of any Sunni that was sympathetic to the insurgency. I refer to the insurgency's complete lack of regard for the life of innocents.

I'd caution people to note the source, and to seek another one or two before flipping out.
