The number two Democrat in the Senate is urging the House of Representatives not to repudiate a provision in the immigration reform bill that would force the U.S. to consult with Mexico before building a border fence.
"To think that we would build a fence without any conversation or consultation with Mexico - that doesn't make sense," Sen. Dick Durbin told "Fox News Sunday."
Asked why he felt such consultations were necessary, the top Democrat explained: "Good fences make good neighbors, too. And remember that when it's all over there will be cities across the border from one another in the United States and Mexico. And you'll find in most instances they'll try to find a level of cooperation.
"We ultimately want to have the cooperation of the Mexican government," Durbin insisted.
An amendment slipped into the Senate bill at the last minute by Sen. Chris Dodd mandates consultations with Mexican officials before any fence construction begins.
It reads:
"CONSULTATION REQUIREMENT -- Consultations between United States and Mexican authorities at the federal, state, and local levels concerning the construction of additional fencing and related border security structures along the United States-Mexico border shall be undertaken prior to commencing any new construction, in order to solicit the views of affected communities, lessen tensions and foster greater understanding and stronger cooperation on this and other important issues of mutual concern."
America wants a fence, Mexico doesn't.
Compromise? The Dims want five feet of fence, then five feet of no fence.
We ought to agree to no fence, and put in unmarked minefields instead.
Hey DICK would you "consult" with your neighbors before putting up a fence? I THINK NOT!
WTF?? Sounds like Durban is working for Mexico instead of U.S. taxpayers.
A consultation is fine if it goes like this: "Mexico, we're building a fence." When I put up a fence in my back yard I told my neighbor "I'm putting up a fence to keep my dogs in my yard." No further consultations were needed.
"Turbin" Durbin wouldn't think this way if he came from Texas.
Vicente Fox dictates our immigration policy anyway.
On page 33, between lines 9 and 10, insert the following:

I think this guy's turbin is to tight around his head and cutting off what blood does get there once in a while....
You guys gonna put this idiot back in office are ya??????
1) Dig a wide, deep moat the entire length of the Mexican-USA border.
2) Use the dirt to raise the New Orleans levies.
3) Relocate all the surplus Florida alligators and put them in the moat.
Any more problems you want me to solve?
Ahh. Consult with the robbers before installing a security alarm. Duh!
"But it will make it harder for me to rob your house"
If so, Arlen Specter certainly passes Kerry's "global test" with flying colors. The only question is who told Specter to add the amendment requiring Mexican approval before a fence can be installed. My guess would be Bush, who will do anything to help his friends in the cheap labor lobby.
"We ultimately want to have the cooperation of the Mexican government," Durbin insisted.
As long as we're dreaming, I would like the traitor Durbingogue to ultimately resign and give a real apology for smearing our troops, but we can't have everything we want.
Rats work for everyone EXCEPT America.
ping
Turban Durbin is off the wall. (pun?) If it were up to Mexico, Fox would be the only person left there.
"Turbin" Durbin wouldn't think this way if he came from Texas.
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. Durbin would be just as big of a dumbass in Texas as he is in Illnois.
A good DEFENSE makes good neighbors too?
