NOTEBOOK-Gore carbon neutral, style-less stars and harmonicas

CANNES, France (Reuters) - The Cannes film festival reached its halfway point on Monday, although bleary-eyed journalists and PR teams seemed to wish it was closer to the end.

Following are some snippets from on and around the Croisette, Cannes' palm-lined waterfront.

AL GORE "CARBON NEUTRAL"

A representative affiliated with "An Inconvenient Truth", a film about global warming involving former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, has stressed that the movie and Gore's tour to promote it are "carbon neutral".

Last week, Gore and his team were seen driving the 500 metres or so from a hotel to the Cannes festival headquarters in several cars. The representative said that arriving at events like photocalls and news conferences in cars was normal practice in Cannes. And Gore walked the shorter distance from another hotel to the festival for the movie's screening.

INDIVIDUAL STYLE DEAD?

Cannes has been graced this year by glamorous actresses from around the world including China's Zhang Ziyi, Italy's Monica Bellucci, Halle Berry of the United States, Aishwarya Rai from India and Spain's Penelope Cruz, as well as many more lesser known performers.

But Dita von Teese, the burlesque-dancing partner of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, complained to Reuters that too many starlets today lack individual style.

"So many people look like they are just a product of a team of stylists ... I think that's a little unfortunate and sad.

"There are so many young beautiful starlets. How great would it be if they did not always pay attention to what was the right and appropriate thing to wear? In a hundred years from now, who are we going to really remember? We will remember Madonna, people like Cher, these iconic women. But I think there's going be a lot of people who are going to be totally forgettable."

HARMONICA

During the press conference for big-budget animation movie "Over the Hedge", Bruce Willis kicked off by saying he was George Clooney. Then a reporter mistook Nick Nolte for Chuck Norris. When the journalist corrected the mistake, Nolte, who seemed to be nodding off, pulled out a harmonica and started to play.

It's also normal practice in America to drive "gas-guzzling" vehicles, yet Gore is calling for an end to that practice. Sounds like an elitist hypocrite to me.

Carbon neutral how? Nuclear powered transport? Planting and sequestering trees? Accompanied by 1000 times his weight in potted plants?

"Sounds like an elitist hypocrite to me."

Some are "more equal" than others...

Do as I say, NOT as I do.

Well, then everyone should buy one of these, and burn water (hydrogen)
This is an ON DeMAND hydrogen generator that fits in the truck of your car. with a slight modification, any car can run on it.

Then what would gore do with no gas taxes?

Well, driving my gas-guzzling V-8 pickup to the corner market for beer is normal practice in my neighborhood. So there.

It's french, so you have to translate it.

It's already patented. This isn't impossible either, BMW has some pure hydrogen cars on the road in Europe as well, but this one makes hydrogen FREE. That's not what the petrolium industy wants to see.

Thanks for the link.

I'm no scientist, but I gotta question the free hydrogen thing. Do you know anybody who's actually seen the contraption work?

He's got a patend. The page shows it running a generator, and the car. The whole device isn't shown, the rest is in that black case.

cars running on pure hydrogen is nothing new. BMW has a few prototypes running around in Europe, except they built a couple hydrogen gas stations (windmill powered) the maintain the gas station concept (as well as the pay the petrolium industry, and government taxes concept)

Time for a calculation of Al Gore's "carbon footprint".
Got one?
