Mel Gibson Slams Da Vinci Code

Monday, May 22, 2006 12:44 a.m. EDT Mel Gibson Slams 'Da Vinci Code'

Catholic actor Mel Gibson has slammed "The Da Vinci Code" book and movie for attacking the beliefs that he holds sacred, World Entertainment Network reported.

"The Passion of the Christ" star has been outraged about the thriller's controversial plot concerning Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. [Editor's Note: Get NewsMax's special report "The Da Vinci Con" FREE with Ann Coulter's book, "Godless" – CLICK HERE NOW!]

Gibson says, "What worries me is that people will take this as fact.

"I'm not angry, per se, that it refutes everything I hold sacred, the foundations of my beliefs. The Da Vinci Code is an admitted work of fiction but it cleverly weaves fact into maverick theories in a way that will appear plausible to some."

The angry star was actually the first choice of Dr. Robert Lomas (the intellectual who inspired the Robert Langdon character) to play him. Tom Hanks plays Langdon in the film

So do we like him now?

I am so confused!!!! One day we like Mel the next he is the great thing next to sliced bread and then the next day we vilify him. This is just crazy. I feel like conservatives are flip floppers sometimes.

Besides the fact that the movie has an awfully heretical story line, the film was terrible, I mean cinematicly. Story line aside, the acting, cinematography, plot twists, effects, etc. were downright disappointing. I would be worried if this was a well done movie that had the possibility of leading others astray, but It's boring! It's not done well enough to capture the audience. I suppose that's a very good thing thou...

We saw the movie last night and both enjoyed it quite well.

We both read the book and thought it was "okay". We probably would have skipped the movie and waited for it to come out on DVD but the choices were limited and what the heck...we usually enjoy Hanks.

As for being boring...I don't know what movies those people saw. We both pretty much compare it to "Sahara" and "National Treasure" in genre and entertainment value. Well worth going to see on the big screen and adding to the home library when it comes on sale.

We were both a little disappointed in that we didn't come out of the theater with an overwhelming desire to dance naked in the moonlight, do strange things to little animals or drive by her Priest's house, ring his doorbell and run.

Could someone sum up, in a few sentences, what the big stink is about? I haven't read the book and haven't seen the movie. Why is Gibson upset?

The real people I was referring to were in Braveheart.

The Patriot was just petrol on the proverbial fire.

You don't get it, do you. The claim of Christianity, which has driven the development of mankind for two thousand years, is that the Creator of heaven and earth made himself known to Abraham, to Moses and in the course of time, made himself known as the man Jesus. Both the book and the movie make light of that claim. It says a lot about the demise of Christianiity in the West that they dare to do so. It says something else that they would not dare make a "major motion picture" based on a book that likewise mocks Islam.

It's an interesting phenomenon. Why do so many people feel compelled to defend "Code"? Clearly it strikes a chord within them.

To me Yes....However, I am interested in your comment. In your opinion, how does Christ having children support His Divine nature?

Doesn't the DaVinci Code say Chist's resurection and His divinity is just stuff made up by Constatine?

You might ask why so many people read the book. This is not like Harry Potter.

I get it 100% I believe in artistic freedom whether it's this dumb movie or Mohammad cartoons. I'm a person of faith, myself, and my faith isn't threatened in the least by the film.

He's pandered to a segment of people who are willing to believe the worst about religious institutions, and about God Himself, which, sadly, is a very large number of people in our society.

As far as my own personal standards, I try to find out the most I can about what I get involved with and judge by that, but too many are all too ready to believe the worst, won't do their own digging and will believe anything. Like P.T. Barnum said.....there's a sucker born every minute and sadly our society is full of people who don't exercise enough energies to stay out of that category.

This movie is not unlike Egypt's TV series on "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion."

It's a conspiracy theory designed to foment hatred.

An interesting exercise a friend and I engaged in once:

Prove, from the bible alone, that Christ was NOT married. It would have been *VERY* odd for any rabbi or, for that matter nearly any 30 year old man, to not be married; so normal that it would bear no comment.

Not that I think He was, but it can be fun to force oneself to dig into scripture. My friend and I took each side of this discussion. "As steel sharpens steel, so one man sharpens another Prov 27-10

"How does "$225 billion" strike you ? In a single weekend..."

Strikes me as somone is a tad off, by the tune of over $224 BILLION dollars! (Dr. Evil voice)

Seriously, "Titanic" made a butt-load of money and I thought it was one of the crappiest movies ever. I'll probably watch Davinci Code when it hits HBO.

That is my point; if Christ was not Divine (as the film claims) than he is not God...If that is the truth, than Christianity is just another false religion and we Christians have been had.

In short, it very well does matter if what they claim is true....

Yeah,Gibson probably took his artistic liberties a bit too far there.

I remember thinking about Janet Reno and Waco as I watched that scene and I wondered.

Depends of the content of your faith, doesn't it? I wonder about the popularity of the book. I gave up reading it after two chapters. If you are interesting in a book with a similar "slant." which is better written, and with irony, I suggest you try James K. Fitzpatrick's Teilhard de Chardon and the New American Church.
