Barbaro Standing After Day Long Surgery (ESPN)

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro came out of a day-long surgery Sunday to repair three broken bones in his right rear leg and "practically jogged back to the stall," the colt's surgeon said.

I imagine the screws are all intended to remain where they are. Looks like they have decided to fuse the ankle joint. Assuming no infection sets in and he is mobile enough to avoid pneumonia (and maintain enough circulation to promote bone and tissue mending), Barbaro should be able to walk well enough to graze and to mate. But he will have a long and difficult recovery.

It's amazing that such large and powerful animals can be so fragile.

PS: I still "wear" titanium plates and screws which were used to mend a damaged shoulder 33 years ago.

Also, I severely stubbed my middle toe a few years ago. The toe joint became very swelled and black-and-blue. I was surprised when my doctor gave me a prescription for antibiotics. When I asked why, he told me that, due to typically poor circulation in this area, blood and tissues could become infected and the body might not be able to effective "clear it out", which could produce blood poisoning, possibly leading to death.

He said to take the medication and, if the pain started traveling up my leg, to get th the emergency room ASAP! Talk about scary stuff.

That's just it though and is the very reason I took a look at your posting history before I posted to you. You're only history appears to be sticking your nose in where it's not warranted.

Funny how easily folks (such as the example of your response to me,) slide into the lame old "you're a troll" thingy when they don't understand or care where another person is coming from. Much easier to dismiss a person rather than try to understand what they're getting at.

Maybe if you contributed a little more "other content" to FR instead of jumping in between posters, people might get to know you and you wouldn't be called troll.

This is actually both good news and bad news. Good that he came through the surgery well and is back on his feet. Bad if he's too high energy, because when high energy horses get injured, they have a tendency to do things like kicking the cast off. In the end, this result will be determined by whether the horse is smart enough to realize he's injured and cool it until he heals. Thoroughbreds are notoriously high-strung, so that's by no means assured.

I think pseudowhoever had re-posted to me and I guess our mod was minding the thread abit because when I went to check my ping there wasn't anything there. Then I noticed all the pings to me from pseudo had been removed and they'd been banned.

Too bad, we hardly knew ye, pseudo.

If it's any consolation, one only need remember that there's still plenty of fish in the sea, no matter what GreenPeace says. :-}

One of the old posts of the 'Nobody by the name.' account mentioned being in what sounded like more than a few internet forums. There are definitely oodles out there but I usually just buzz around FR as a rule, most of the others are unwieldy , built like an edsel, not so this mazerati beast we frequent here.

Barbaro was trying to bite in his stall and even showing interest in a group of mares who stopped by to visit.

It's very hard to smile at all this day ........... but....... what a guy!

I had a similar thing happen when I was playing a little football up at Fort Devens (Army Security Agency) back in '69. It was my big toe though.

You're right............ there is little circulation down there. But...... it was nice to kick the Sarge anyhow.

I know how broken hearted you are about this and I really apologize for keeping up the engagement with pseudowhoever. I had thought maybe pseudo was calming down abit but I suppose their last post to me must have been a doozy.

With the proper use of spell check, my last reply would read:

Are you suggesting that you and that race horse have some physical attribute in common?

The horse is done for racing. They can only hope for stud now.

"There's some mares there, and he's extremely interested in the mares," Richardson told ABC's "Good Morning America."

Yea baby! Checkin' out the ladies! He's on the road to recovery!

I only live a few short miles from New Bolton, so I'm going to try to get some friends (freeper types) and hang out at the entrance of New Bolton for a vigil that we are going to call the "Barbaro Babe-Watch, Beer Bash and BBQ Bonanza. We already have our theme song picked out. It's "Barbara-Ann" by the Beach Boys.

"You got me rockin' and a rollin', rockin' and a reelin'.. Barbaro, Bar-Bar Bar-Bar Baro."

What do you think? Any local freepers interested in joining? We're thinking weekend, obviously.

Good for you! I'm jealous! Take an apple and 2 carrots from Rte66, please!

"Went to a dance, looking for romance, saw Barbaro and I thought I'd take chance ... Barbaro ... Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran ... oops, sorry."

Just an FYI that I'll put on a couple of Barbaro threads - the New Bolton Center is going to do updates as necessary. In a few weeks, we may not be able to find much, so this can be for future reference.

There will be an update posted at 3PM Eastern Time today:
