AP: "Too Close to Call"

NEW ORLEANS — Voters were deciding Saturday whether incumbent Mayor Ray Nagin or challenger Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu should oversee this city's long recovery from Hurricane Katrina — one of the largest reconstruction projects in U.S. history.

Whoever wins the too-close-to-call election takes office a day before the June 1 start of the next hurricane season in a city where streets are still strewn with rusting, mud-covered cars and entire neighborhoods consist of homes that are empty shells.

Each candidate is poaching about 20% of the other race's vote.

Just saddened by the blatant corruption of dems all over the country.

201 of 442 Precincts 45%
Mitch Landrieu 21,184 52%
Ray Nagin (I) 19,450 48%

The Republicans have played this well. I think Landrieu is shocked how well Nagin is doing. Also usually black areas come in last in NOLA Of course the machine is backing Landrieu.

Jindal for governor in '07? Good idea, though I would like to see him run against Sen. Landrieu in '08. I think she could be beaten.

Meanwhile if Nagin is defeated tonight I suppose we will hear the usual screams of racism. The conspiracy nuts will say the hurricane was all some vast right wing plot to get whites back in power in N.O., etc etc.

I hope so. Magin has got to cut cut how much Landrieu was getting of the black vote. Trouble is Nagin had no money to work those areas. I am praying though

WDSU just said an all black precinct that was 64% for Nagin in primary went 81% for him today. They are saying overall Nagin has increased his black vote. Several absentee ballots, 800 or so rejected....

Well I am hoping we have a Republican of good quality to run against Landrieu.

Good gosh I think Nagin is going to lose. It seems the reporters have an advance on unofficial tallies. Nagin has got to pull ahead soon.

Does this remind you an awful lot of the David Duke/Edwin Edwards race? Just nobody worth voting for although I have been for Nagin.

I think this electorate is a bit whiter than the primary electorate.

The New Orleans Mayor runoff election between Mayor Nagin and Mitch Landrieu might actually be slower than earlier anticipated and more black. According to various poll watchers who were as of 1:00 P.M. C.S.T. Saturday, Election Day, the New Orleans elections turnout is not as strong as early this morning, or white as last month during the primary.
