Illegals granted Social Security (05/18/06-Senate 50-49 vote/based on past illegal employment ????)

The Senate voted yesterday to allow illegal aliens to collect Social Security benefits based on past illegal employment -- even if the job was obtained through forged or stolen documents. "There was a felony they were committing, and now they can't be prosecuted. That sounds like amnesty to me," said Sen. John Ensign, the Nevada Republican who offered the amendment yesterday to strip out those provisions of the immigration reform bill. "It just boggles the mind how people could be against this amendment." The Ensign amendment was defeated on a 50-49 vote. "We all know that millions of undocumented immigrants pay Social Security and Medicare taxes for years and sometimes decades while they work to contribute to our economy," said Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican. "The Ensign amendment would undermine the work of these people by preventing lawfully present immigrant workers from claiming Social Security benefits that they earned before they were authorized to work in our community," he said. "If this amendment were enacted, the nest egg that these immigrants have worked hard for would be taken from them and their families." Mr. Ensign was among 44 Republicans and five Democrats who voted to block such payouts

no you don't need to be citizen to get a SS card (a legit one). You just need a "green card".

Many people including those in the congress and senate confuse "legal status" w/ citizenship. Many people here working legally have no desire to be American citizens. They want to keep their home country citizenship.

Sounds like Mexico's Fox isn't the only one pushing for a combined Mexico, Canada, United States Union for North America. I cannot fathom why our politicians won't stand up for our Nation and stop the nonsense.

A gift that just keeps giving. From John McCain, who gave us the McCain-Feingold attack on free speech, who opposes tax cuts, who has no interest in sealing the borders, we now have a frontal attack on American culture. This east coast elitist, who from his 11 acre "ranch" at the wus-paradise Sedona wears the mantle of Western rugged individualism, is a 24 carat phoney. In reality he is the quintessential guilt ridden white about whom Shelby Steele writes.

It was an amendment. I don't think there is a filibuster rule for amendments.

IMO Bush should halt all immigration and all citizenship, and call for a nation wide vote.

A national ID card should be issued in a national database to deter voter fraud.

An issue this important, about the future of our glorious country, should not be demagogued by politicians for political advantage.

Socialist Security should be completely dismantled. All past/current participants should have the option of receiving a lump sum payment now. The amount would be the sum of employee and employer contributions plus interest. Most younger people, under 50 for example, would take the money and run. Let retired people stay with it, if they want, or they can opt out too, receiving their original "investment" plus interest minus payments received so far. No more new participants - let this monsterous, socialist ponzi scheme die from lack of new suckers.

'Many people including those in the congress and senate confuse "legal status" w/ citizenship. Many people here working legally have no desire to be American citizens. They want to keep their home country citizenship."

I see no compelling reason to make these illegals legit US citizens.

More crap from our congresscritters.

And don't we confiscate assets gained by illegal drug sales?
So, would we not confiscate the assets of an illegal immigrant who profited from selling drugs?
What's the difference?...
Oops! I momentarily forgot. Politicians are involved...

If all the common sense in the Senate was TNT and compressed into one fire cracker and lit; it would only produce a small puff of smoke and no sound.

This will (BETTER NOT) never fly by the House.

If it does, we need a new freaking government. It'll be time to clean both houses come November.

"If this amendment were enacted, the nest egg that these immigrants have worked hard for would be taken from them and their families."

It was obtained ILLEGALY. Suddenly I get the feeling that this NEW improved immigration policy is going to be nothing but another legislative farce. I keep hearing the critters say that we are a nation of laws, so why can't they just enforce the law and punish those who break it?
