Illegals granted Social Security (05/18/06-Senate 50-49 vote/based on past illegal employment ????)

The Senate voted yesterday to allow illegal aliens to collect Social Security benefits based on past illegal employment -- even if the job was obtained through forged or stolen documents. "There was a felony they were committing, and now they can't be prosecuted. That sounds like amnesty to me," said Sen. John Ensign, the Nevada Republican who offered the amendment yesterday to strip out those provisions of the immigration reform bill. "It just boggles the mind how people could be against this amendment." The Ensign amendment was defeated on a 50-49 vote. "We all know that millions of undocumented immigrants pay Social Security and Medicare taxes for years and sometimes decades while they work to contribute to our economy," said Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican. "The Ensign amendment would undermine the work of these people by preventing lawfully present immigrant workers from claiming Social Security benefits that they earned before they were authorized to work in our community," he said. "If this amendment were enacted, the nest egg that these immigrants have worked hard for would be taken from them and their families." Mr. Ensign was among 44 Republicans and five Democrats who voted to block such payouts

I'm sorry ...from the preamble of the Declaration of Independence...

"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."....

penned by Thomas Jefferson these words are most applicable to the context "equal under the law" which was a revolutionary concept. The law in a monarchy is variable/whimsical depending basically on whatever the king decides it is at the moment. Those in favor in the King's court got away with things no common man could.

IMHO, our Senate is behaving as though illegal immigrants may be above and beyond our laws, which would apply to you and I. I don't understand, nor do I particularly want to understand how this can be. The Senat is attempting to trash 225 years of Freedom's struggle to maintain the existence of law that is equally applicable to each one of us, and not subject to whim and fancy.

I didn't mean to be confusing.

Lovely document the 'Declaration of Independence', "all men (citizens of America) are created equal". People died so we don't have kings, and the current Senate in a royalty kingly fashion, believe we don't really, really know what's best for us..... specially on immigration.
Yes there are laws, but let's not enforce them.
Yes we have borders, but let's not secure them.
Oh and yes, the 12 million people who illegally crossed our borders and violate our laws ..... let's adopt them,
and their friends and families, and let them vote.

While we're at it, at taxpayers expense, lets provide job security to the representatives of the people, those lofty intellectuals of the Senate, who know what's best for us, despite our wishes.

Power is the game of politics, the quest for power will have some casualty's, hopefully the Declaration of Independence will not be among them.
