President Bush Job Approval: Rasmussen 36% (All-Time Low for Ras)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | 5/18/2006 | Rasmussen Reports

Posted on 05/18/2006 9:21:28 AM PDT by NYC Republican

Thirty-six percent (36%) of Americans Approve of the way that George W. Bush is performing his role as President. Just 15% Strongly Approve. Those are the lowest levels ever measured by Rasmussen Reports. Just 65% of Republicans approve of the President's Job Performance, also a new low.

This data is based upon nightly telephone surveys and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. For today's update, more than 75% of respondents were interviewed after the President Bush's speech on immigration.

Just 39% of voters agree with the President's approach on immigration. Most consider the issue very important and believe that strict enforcement of immigration laws will help the economy.

Democrats now hold a 15-percentage point lead over Republicans on the Generic Congressional Ballot. Before the Presdent's speech, they had a 10-point lead. Just 27% of Americans believe the country is now heading in the right direction.

While the President's numbers have fallen, Hillary Clinton's poll numbers are the best they've been in more than a year of Hillary Meter polling by Rasmussen Reports. Another Democrat doing well is Ted Strickland. He maintains a double digit lead in his effort to become the first Democratic Governor of Ohio in 16 years.

Also in Ohio. Congressman Sherrod Brown (D) leads incumbent Senator Mike DeWine (R) by three percentage points. Though within the poll's margin of error, it's the first time Brown has had a lead of any sort.

Montana Senator Conrad Burns (R) once again trails both Democrats seeking his job. Dragged down by his association with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Burns' poll numbers are worse than those for a relatively unknown GOP challenger.

Washington Senator Maria Cantwell (D) has been on the defensive lately and her lead has shrunk to five percentage points. When the year began, she was up by 15.

Delusional, if you ask me. Even Dr. Deb, who I think is just being overly optimistic, should now accept that Bush' numbers are in the toilet.

I'm hoping he's hit bottom, but you just can't tell. 20s are a real possibility, the way things have been going.

I honestly do not know anyone personally who supports the amnesty. That is what is dragging him down.

I don't know either. Maybe someone has W mesmerized with this?:

Bill Clinton never would have let his approval ratings slip this low, but then he really cared about approval ratings...

20s are a real possibility, the way things have been going.

If Bob Taft could make it into the low teens in Ohio there seems little doubt GWB can get down there too..

No it's not. Eliminate the incentives and they will self deport. What is so hard to understand about that?

I am sure if he would drop the amnesty his polls would go up at least 10 to 15 points over night.

The 6 millions were caught right at the borders and it was easier to deport them. The 12 millions illegal are already here and many of them came before 2001.

He will not do it because it is impossible to deport 12 millions of them.

If we end all illegal social programs and illegal hiring, they'll either end up in jail or go home. I don't see a problem with that. Just stop rewarding them for illegal entry. Don't reward them for breaking our immigration laws.

Cubans say they come here for "the gift." They come to America, and Americans give them a wonderful life - for free!
Why wouldn't thousands of poor people come here? The tax payers are an endless well of wealth and free hand outs.
The pandering politicians throw money around like candy at a parade if they think it'll get them a vote.

I am the first to question the accuracy of a poll. But you can't dent Bush's slide. I think Rasmussen has it right. The bottom line is Bush has fallen out of favor with the base. Is it the end of the world? No. Every president at some time falls out of favor with their base. It happened to Reagan it happened to Clinton. You can't please everyone. The important part here is to get the base back. I hope Josh Bolten and Tony Snow are reading the blogs because that is where the base is. Not the beltway. I look at this positively because our next presidential candidate will be more conservative.

There is a broad consensus that Dubya stinks. That makes him a very weak leader in a very dangerous time. He doesn't have the political clout to do anything. This is a real problem.

Bingo. It's sad to watch all the insults thrown around here, when people express their sincere concern over this issue.

Yup. I was flamed so mnay times, my but is still hurting!

Well, his actions are someone like Damien Thorn lately. I have said over and over, he was a dead duck in February 2005, when right after his re-election he decided to spend his "political capital" on this traitorous program.

He has only himself to blame and no one else. Not the RATS, not the base who volunteered for him twice, not the MSM, not Hillary or Kennedy, himself.

If he wants to do the bidding for corporate welfare and illegals, than how on earth do you expect most Americans to respond?

You're making a foolish argument

Did you even bother to read the article before engaging your attack mode?

Just 39% of voters agree with the President's approach on immigration. Most consider the issue very important and believe that strict enforcement of immigration laws will help the economy.

This is actually polling results.

Strikes me a REEAAAALY REACHING for a reason to whine and complain about 'how you were right', usually coming from the 'Bush is the Devil' crowd around here found in some of the immigration crowd.

Seems to me you'd rather attack than be up to speed on the underlying issue you are attacking about. And sadly enough, you are the rule rather than the exception lately among those who support Bush's position on immigration.

Considering the six years of slander and attacks by those who hate him, I'm surprised the President's poll numbers are this high.

One nice thing about him, one reason why I voted to reelect him, is that he doesn't allow polls to distract him from his duties. A side benefit...it drives his detractors crazy.

Guys you try to solve a complex non linear differential equation with 1+1=2. That is the same when you suggest that punishing few employers will cause the remaining employers to abide by the law and hence the 12 millions illegal immigrants will leave on their own.

Our ship of state is effectively captainless and rudderless now, and we've got two and half years to go of this presidency.. Yeah, it's a real big problem.

I think any one poll doesn't tell you all that much. However, I think you can look at several polls (that all tell the same basic story) and draw a meaningful conclusion. That's been the story for quite a while now, though the conventional wisdom at FR has been to balk at every poll that shows Dubya and the GOP with low support.

That was foolish then and it is foolish now. Any one poll is questionable, but if all the major polls tell the same basic story, petulant denial of them isn't helpful.

I'm glad FR is beginning to realize that it is possible that public opinion can indeed shift against the GOP.
