Mexican FM blasts US border plans
Herald Sun ^ | 17 May 2006

Posted on 05/16/2006 4:47:21 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

MEXICAN Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez today slammed US President George W. Bush's plan to send 6000 troops to secure the US-Mexico border and stanch the flow of illegal immigrants there, adding that Mexico has no plans to follow suit.

Mr Derbez complained in a television interview that the move amounted to "militarising" the border, enabling US troops to detain people.

Mr Bush said "very clearly" that 6000 National Guard troops will be stationed there to support border patrol operations, Mr Derbez said.

The US president yesterday said that up to 6000 National Guard troops - part-time soldiers under the authority of state governors but whom the president can call upon - could be deployed on the southern border beginning next month.

He said the soldiers would not arrest migrants but instead would provide ancillary services such as road and vehicle repair, fence building and electronic surveillance. The troops would be rotated into the border area for stints of about two weeks throughout a two-year period.

That's not cheeky. This is cheeky. They intend to sue George Bush the first time one of our soldiers touches one of their migrants!

He should be blasting this guy for all he's worth about our soveriegn right to secure our borders however we see fit without permission from Mexico to do so!

I agree. On another thread, Hugh Hewitt asked Mark Steyn his opinion on Bush's 5/15 speech. One of Steyn's remarks:

"No, I don't think he [Bush] helped himself, and I don't believe he seriously tackled what is a sustained assault by Mexico on U.S. sovereignty."

So we aren't going to shoot people on our southern border coming through the way Mexico does?

Why can't we learn and mirror Mexico to make them happy?

Mexico has no plans to follow suit.

Wait. I thought we signed an agreement with Mexico before the speech that we would both send troops to the border.

No?

President Bush must be doing something right...

It certainly appears that way. :)

Don't worry Vicente. They can't detain and they won't be armed. And it's not even 6000 on duty all at once. Don't worry, it's all cool, our Prez and Senate have given you the keys to our Government.

There is no need for a wall excepr in the minds of those who don't understand the situation.

Yeah, right. Understand the situation. Let's see, I have been in the US since 1942(I was born then). I have fought for my country, voted faithfully and watched 64 years of politics roll along. I have a reasonably high IQ, 4 years of college, lots of technical schools, had a grade point average of 3.89 but yet, yet, I can't understand the situation of millions of ILLEGAL parasites running across our border and the need for a physical barrier, be it wall or REAL fence, to restrain them.

I guess you are right, you are just too damn smart for me and I am just to damn dumb to understand/SAR.

Do you actually have something constructive to say to me or do you just think name calling and calling into question my intelligence and ability to understand political situations will be enough dialog?

If 6000 guard troops serve a 2 week term on the border, we are talking about 6000 troops * (2wks/52wks/yr) = 230 man years. Or the equivalent of adding 230 full-time employees.

Or do I understand this wrong?

This is cheeky.

It sure is.

"If there is a real wave of rights abuses, if we see the National Guard starting to directly participate in detaining people ... we would immediately start filing lawsuits through our consulates," Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez told a Mexico City radio station. He did not offer further details.

It's basic political psychology. They detect weakness in Bush so they flood the zone against even his pathetically minor enforcement proposals so as to make that the maximum we are willing to go to enforce our sovereignty.

Mexico already has troops on the bordern, some of them rogue. They have some on their northern border, but they have lots on their southern border. Not only that, you will see troops, armed with HK assault rifles and some heavier stuff, at checkpoints within the country, primarily where roads cross state boundaries.

I know when I was down in Campeche about 8 years ago, the pimply kid with the HK made me very nervous while the nice agricultural inspector looked over the vehcile. It was an Evil SUV, (In Dallas Cowboy Colors) but owned by our Mexican friends, and driven by one of their employees.

And who is going to go through the Texas Air and Army National Guard, not to mention the half of III Corps not deployed (basically First Cav) and elements of the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine reserves, to deliver the papers?

My spanish is not real good, but I believe my message to the PM is pronounced... "UckFay, Uyay!"

He wouldn't understand that. You have to put in terms he would understand.

Perhaps. Perhaps 6000 at at any given time would be detailed to the border. The border is about 1500 miles long, Brownsville to San Diego. That's 4 troops per mile. But one of those will be support of some sort, and the others will be on 3 shifts. Thus it's one, or at most 2 (12 hour 7 da /week shifts, and insignificant support troops) per mile of border. I'm sure the coyotes are trembling in their boots, not. (But if they think about Hellfire armed Predators, then maybe they really would be.)
