Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Kweisi Mfume said yesterday that Democrats risk losing the senatorial election because "old-line party bosses" are undermining his campaign and alienating black voters. Mr. Mfume also would not say whether he would endorse Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, the front-runner for the Democratic Senate nomination, if he should lose to the lawmaker in the September primary. "I can say that there will be people who will feel disaffected [if I am not the nominee]," Mr. Mfume told editors and reporters at The Washington Times. "I've tried to resist the hypothetical question [about endorsing Mr. Cardin]," he said. "I have to stay in this mode that I'm going to win, but the day after the election, I'm sure I'll have an answer." Mr. Mfume is vying for the nomination to replace Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, a Democrat who is retiring. Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, the first black to win statewide office in Maryland, is running for the seat as a Republican. Calling Mr. Steele a "friend," Mr. Mfume said he shares similar goals and ideas with the Republican official as well as Mr. Cardin. "I agree with both of them, maybe equally but on different things," said Mr. Mfume, a former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and former president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Immigration: "I like [House Judiciary Chairman] Jim Sensenbrenner, but hes dead wrong with the House version that says, Lets put up a 700-mile wall around the United States. Lets lock up every priest and every pastor that gives food or comfort to an illegal who may be dying on the street, because that means youre an automatic felon. Thats draconian, and thats why youre having the demonstrations taking place." [5]
Mfume makes me Queasy.
Queasy Mfume is too liberal for even the hard-line Dems in Maryland.
Awwwww.... Queasy I'mPhony ain't gittin' the support of the 'Rats. And this in a "cobalt blue" state according to the Dynamo from Dundalk.
Good 'ol Frizzel Grey
Now that Mfume has spoken, I expect that Dean will soon be shown the door.
Hopefully this will be a pick-up for the Republicans. I still see us adding at least one seat this year despite all the doom and gloom I hear from the MSM.
They only cared about him when he was heading the NAACP. Now that he's trying to achieve real power, they don't want nothing to do with him.
Typical liberal hypocrisy/racism...
Where's my Natty Bo, hon? ;0)
"I can say that there will be people who will feel disaffected [if I am not the nominee],"
Like his Mom and Dad, cant think on anyone else though.
What about his record of anti-semitism? How come Conyers, McKinney, this jerk, and a LARGE number of Dems are given a pass on their open hatred of Israel?
Who says there's no bias in the MSM?
Wasn't he the head of the Congressional Black Caucus at one time?
I remember seeing him in 1994 (on C-SPAM i think) decrying with a hispanic member of Congress (Jose Torres?) about the defunding of the CBC by the Congress.
He referred to it as 'ethnic cleansing."
I kid you not. This was one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen on television.
Not more mfuming from Mfume! This must be series.
Hey folks, don't be too hard on Mfume; he all but said if he loses the Dem primary (almost certain) he'll tacitly endorse Steele.
"Wasn't he the head of the Congressional Black Caucus at one time?"
I think you are right. He had a regular name back then, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was.
His many illegitimate kids too.
He's taken speech lessons from Kerry.
Actually, the Dems are worried about a lot more than Swami Buffune's delicate sensitivities. The candidate to which they are hitching their star, Ben Cardin, is is a real cipher. He is an old time ward heeler from Balmur who was a complete nonentity in the House. The unions pretty much own him, so they will fight hard to get him into the Senate. In a statewide race, though, he's not an easy sell.
I wouldn't harp too much on the illegitimate kids. Swami acknowledges his paternal responsibility and supports the kids. Not the best of all worlds, for sure, but it's a damn sight more than many Black (and White) fathers do. There are lots of things to get on Swami about. I'd leave this one be.
