Reagan on Immigration
The Wall Street Journal (Reg. Req.) ^ | May 16, 2006 | Editorial Staff

Posted on 05/16/2006 5:39:20 AM PDT by LowCountryJoe

[snip]During the same campaign, circa December 1979, the Gipper responded to criticism from conservative columnist Holmes Alexander with the following: "Please believe me when I tell you the idea of a North American accord has been mine for many, many years. I have seen presidents, both Democrat and Republican, approach our neighbors with pre-concocted plans in which their only input is to vote 'yes.'

"Some months before I declared, I asked for a meeting and crossed the border to meet with the president of Mexico. I did not go with a plan. I went, as I said in my announcement address, to ask him his ideas -- how we could make the border something other than a locale for a nine-foot fence." So much for those conservatives who think the Gipper would have endorsed a 2,000-mile Tom Tancredo-Pat Buchanan wall.

[snip]In his signing statement, Reagan declared that "We have consistently supported a legalization program which is both generous to the alien and fair to the countless thousands of people throughout the world who seek legally to come to America. The legalization provisions in this act will go far to improve the lives of a class of individuals who now must hide in the shadows, without access to many of the benefits of a free and open society. Very soon many of these men and women will be able to step into the sunlight and, ultimately, if they choose, they may become Americans."

So you have no proplen with allowing over 220 million immigrates into the country over the next twenty years? Not counting the 20 million illegals all ready here.

It is the truth!

About as truthful as saying Bush planned 911. Go take that BS elsewhere.

Reagan was a brilliant man and one of the greatest speakers ever. Reagan did more to promote and advance conservatism than any person in the last 100 years.

I agree with you on that about Reagan

But don't forget .. At the time that was not what was being said about Reagan

It wasn't till years later that many realized he was the great President many of us already knew he was

When history is told .. the same thing will be said of Bush43

far fewer illegals crossing the border in 1979 than there are today

The situation then does not even begin to approach what it is now. The incentive was there for illegals to come here and work for a time but there was less of an incentive for them to stay here, and to bring the family.

Don't dismiss Simon as some hack, either. He was a brilliant economist who was a true limited government thinker. Certainly don't bet against him either, for that matter.

Yeah, of course. There is no difference at all between the Berlin Wall and the proposed Border Wall. No difference at all.

I normally try to be nice and give people the benefit of the doubt but I can't in your case. If you really believe that there is no difference between the Berlin wall and this wall then you are being an idiot.

I read somewhere yesterday there were only 106 million people in all of Mexico.........

And not all of them want to come here, that's for sure.

I know what I am talking about. Reagan was my Governor before he was my President. I liked him a lot, but Nancy did consult the stars and then passed on her advice to the President. Maybe you are too young to remember.

These people are probably not a net drain as many like to claim they are.

I've yet to see a report from anyone familiar with the business end of an adding machine that shows the illegal alien problem as anything but a net drain on the taxpayer's pocketbook.

Where did you pull that thought from ??

Sessions was right to point out the problems and loop holes with the stupid immigration bill that is in the Senate

Illegals have been pouring over the boarder for years and years. As I have said before over and over, this is not a new problem. Didn't happen overnight.

You are misrepresenting what happened.

Nancy did try to influence her husband's schedule with astrology. RR never took policy advice from astrology, nor did her influence go that far even in the schedule.

Okay. Reagan is my hero, but I'll admit that he wasn't perfect. His amnesty bit was a mistake.

The "What would Reagan do" is pretty immaterial at this point. What's important is to get the damn border secured.

Whether illegals are good for the economy or not, they are ILLEGAL. Why are there so many people that can't wrap their brains around that concept?

Ah, the hell with it. Most of the politicians see the numbers of illegals and all they can see are potential voters, so what will really get accomplished?

The overwhelming number of immigrates was the point of the comment by Sessions that I posted to you. And Bush is pushing the Senate plan.
