President's Immigration speech - Live thread

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Yep. Where is it our responsibility to provide these people with freedom, both economic and personal? Preventing them from coming here illegally would be the best thing for them in the long run, if they were to only realize and act on it.

And I hope all the rabid conservatives keep on venting as that has made it possible for Bush to beef up his border enforcement suggestions and still seem moderate. A year ago they would have seemed radical.

The "rabid conservatives" here who have successfully disrupted the forum don't generally post on other "conservative" threads.

There are some exceptions, but I think I'm safe in saying that the majority don't.

So, if you're a one-issue poster against illegal immigration and want to resort to radical measures to combat it, does that really qualify you as a conservative?

I have stepped out of character tonight. Im sorry I let emotion speak instead of rational debate. Namecalling goes both ways and Im sorry I started it..

As I understand it the fencing mentioned in the House Bill was the same, urban areas and "hot spot" areas. I never expected a plan to fence the entire border; if that is done it will have to be done in stages I think, just due to cost and logistics. I think he did sound tougher on enforcement tonight than he ever has.

I did not expect him to propose everything I want, but I do see what he outlined under enforcement as a step in the right direction and I thought his plans for illegals already here could have been worse.

Let's put it this way, I didn't scream once during this speech unlike many other times he has talked about this issue. I didn't do a lot of cheering either- but I know what I really want to happen is not that realistic.

I missed the speech and the democrat reply as well. What I saw was 5 minutes of Bill Richardson looking VERY presidential. I feel like I'm being played and all of this is a strategy to develop a Dem (Bill) to beat Hillary, and I started feeling that way a LONG time ago (see my old posts).

Keeping the drugs out is a lot like keeping the illegal immigrants out.

We seem to agree that if we stopped employers from hiring illegal immigrants, they wouldn't have any reason to cross the borders.

The same is true with illegal drugs. We won't stop them until we eliminate the demand for illegal drugs.

True enough. I have helped birth babies, calves, and lambs. I have installed plumbing, electricity, telephone, and cable TV. Installed plumbing, septic tanks, and sewer lines. Run more than 40 rods of barbed wire fence, and pulled cows out of stock tanks when they broke through the ice. All without a federal permit. Nobody was there with a freakin clipboard to figure out whether a federal statute was infringed. Cause if they had been, they would have been put to work. The problem is NOT with us, the problem is with the candy@ss government workers. Including ICE, and CBP. They are corrupt. The president should not be blamed for the failures. He should give it a rest about what we "will not, can not, or do not" do. This feeds the opposition. That mantra has failed miserably with conservatives. Until this administration assumes a hardline stance with Mexico AND Canada, I will call inept action what it is.
