May 15, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In his live, nationally televised address tonight, President Bush will tell Americans that it's impossible to deport the estimated 11 million illegal aliens living here.
"We must reject amnesty, but recognize that it is not realistic to round up millions of people and send them home," said White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri in a preview of Bush's speech.
She said Bush plans to spell out his vision for sealing the border, enforcing the law, and "creating a rational system for workers to come into our country and to do jobs Americans won't do." Bush plans to visit the U.S.-Mexican border this week, and will dispatch his Cabinet to help sell the immigration plan.
The Senate plans to return to the contentious issue this week now that Republicans and Democrats have a deal to plow through controversial amendments. But the House and Senate are far apart on whether to put illegals on a path to citizenship.
Tamburri said Bush would call for "better equipment, increased funding, and advanced technology" to secure the border.
She didn't confirm press reports that Bush wants to expand deployments of National Guard Troops to step up border enforcement. Some Guard troops are already deployed in Arizona and New Mexico, but Bush is considering a big increase.
White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said that enforcement was the Border Patrol's job - but then asked whether they needed help from the Guard on an "interim basis."
"This is not about militarizing the border," he said. The president is looking to do everything he can to secure the border. It's what the American people want."

If this is an accurate precursor of the Presidents' speech, and I hope it is not, it will not go well. The phrase "jobs Americans won't do" should never, ever be used. There is no need to make reference to how we can't deport 11M illegals. No one is proposing it and it isn't necessary. Close the border, dry up the jobs and shut off the welfare benefits. A huge part of the problem will solve itself. Oh, and announce that Chertoff has been fired as he apparently can't get anything done. Appoint Joe Arpaio.
That is right, you can't BUT if you go after the employers with LARGE fines for hiring illegals, they will leave on their own because they cannot find work and the TIDAL WAVE will cease.
It is only common sense.
Apparently NO ONE in the GOVERNMENT is able to use LOGIC AND COMMON SENSE.
I posted a similar sentiment on another thread:
I've never understood the pro-illegal crowd. The only legitimate basis for a repubilican form of government is the rule of law. Any erosion of that principle begins a corrosive process that leads to cynicism & corruption.
If they (pro-illegals) want to support illegal aliens, why don't they focus on overturning/modifying our immigration/labor laws via the democratic process?
Allowing illegals to openly & wontonly breaks our laws, or the executive (Bush) to selectively enforce/ignore our laws is no different from letting 9 people on the SC establish law. All are undemocratic, in that they do not follow the rule of law established by the legitimate power of the people.
I am looking forward to the President's speech. But the phrase, "Jobs Americans won't do" has got to go.
I want the President to do a better job of explaining exactly why he believes we need a guest worker program. Not just a catch phrase.
I would like him to provide a realistic assessment explaining why he believes his fellow citizens will not do certain jobs.
I would like him to explain why we then need foreign nationals to do these jobs instead of encouraging American citizens to do the jobs.
I would like him to explain then how if foreign nationals do these jobs it will not depress wages for American citizens and I would like him to explain his belief that foreign nationals will better this nation by doing those jobs.
And I want him to be clear to everyone, WHAT EXACTLY ARE THE JOBS Americans WON"T DO.
It would be easy to deport them all.
1. IRS and SSA cross compile document and tax fraud
2. ICE/FBI notify employers
3. Employers fire those without proper documentation
4. Illegals self deport.
5. Require money transfers overseas be reported by banks and USPS to IRS and taxed at the rate of the cost of illegals- between 30-40B a year.
to do jobs Americans won't do
I am getting really tired of hearing this lame excuse.
You are not alone. Obviously, we are not the audience Bush is playing to.
Can't believe I'm about to go thumbs down on him. Hope his speech tonight at least leaves my thumb wiggling sideways.
Here's one:
Jail business people who hire illegal aliens. No more jobs Americans won't do over night.
Tell me if I am right about what this all boils down to:
Everyone else does it is now a valid excuse to break the law.
No .. he is being realistic .. it is not possible to deport 11 million people all at once
Read the article. It is unskilled people that will have priority, not skilled.
Big expansion of the welfare system in this bill.
I have been hearing this delusional proposition for the last five years. How many employers are you going to fine for this to happen? 2%, 10%, 30%?.... It will not happen and you must get realistic about this issue.
Most illegal immigrants are hired by small businesses and not big companies, it is much harder to track gas stations, cleaning firms, restaurants, families that hire "nannies", etc...
Putting troops on the borders is yet the most important attempt ever to stop illegal immigration. Also the illegal immigrants who are here must never obtain citizenship if they recieve documents to legally work in the US. This is the most realistic and effective solution.
"Yes, of course I'm speaking
to you, conservative fools!"
I agree!!!!!!
You go from thread to thread accusing people who LOVE America of being hate mongers, do give me ALL examples where I am promoting hate and than look at your own posts.
You attack individuals I DON'T!
this is bs. when you are overweight, you still have to start by losing the first pound. whether you are 5, or 100 lbs overweight, the beginning is the same result. You must still lose that first pound.
by the way, there are more like 30 million illegal aliens here, not 10 or 11. the 11 million number is 20 years old.
Once again, our President tells the truth.
They/he are playing a totally different tune.
Hmmm the word "hate" is the keyword of the cheerleaders for the day.
