Feeding The Bears...And Othe Vermin

Posted on 05/13/2006 5:35:30 AM PDT by wgflyer

Don’t feed the bears! They lose their fear of people and become a nusience. Don’t feed the animals in the zoo. they are not used to the kind of food that people give them and they lose their health. Don’t throw rice at weddings. It kills the little sparrows that gobble it up later...and on and on. Liberals are there to protect the weak, the misunderstood and the dumb from all of us, arent they?

Liberals treat street people almost the same as they treat forest animals. They seem to feel that the streets belong to street people the same way that your campground really belongs to the bear, and that if you go there it is you, not the poor wild thing, who needs to be prudent. You can’t shoot them if they take up residence in your garage or spread your garbage around looking in your bin for a bone with still some bits of meat hanging on it. You have to call the “authorities”, who will then tell you to let them know if it becomes bothersome or maybe, if you’re persistent about it, shoo him off to another area nearby.

But that’s where the similarity ends. Strangely, liberal policy is exactly opposite with street people in that, while you can’t feed the bears, you are encouraged give all you want to adicts, drunks, the insane and general panhandlers no matter how much it encourages them to forage in your space. Liberal government even establishes feeding stations for them, called welfare offices, where they ensure that street people will be guaranteed all the stuff that’s bad for them that they could want...for a day or so, anyway.

Perhaps we need a humane way to remove street people to portions of the city not tread upon by decent people with an actual life, the same way we remove bears from populated areas of the park when they get unruly. You know, a guy takes a crap on your front porch, you call the city humane society and they shoot him with a dart of his favorite drug, put him in a cage and transport him to the slummiest part of the town where he can be among his own. If he comes back three times, well, perhaps we can put something more permnent in the dart.

They should just go back to zero tolerance of vagrancy. Roust these bums continually (and put the mentally ill back into institutions) to keep the local LEO's busy. The current problems arise when idiot policies allow anti-social behavior and the end result is ever escalating crime spirals.

Throwing rice is not going to harm ANY wild animals unless they eat too much and become morbidly obese. See this Snopes article on the subject.

This is it?

This is what you occupy your time with? Obsessional preoccupation with the erradication of the homeless?

Let's put it this way: Mother Teresa has nothing to worry about from you stealing her fame as a humanitarian.

Your absolutely "barren cupboard" of even one shred of human compassion suggests a possible deficit in adult rational sanity. That it smacks of a fixation of unhealthy hatred, points to your own tragic mental circumstance...sort of making you an exact emotional version of a "down-and-outter" yourself...a state of mind some have termed "out-picturing" your own faults in others.

Take heart. Those wretched souls are God's children... and so are we... and you. May you find rest and assurance in him now... as we pray for all of us.

I think you miss the point. Compassion is one thing. Institutionalized encouragement of negative behavior is quite another. Bless you for your compassion of our downtrodden, but your passions and your efforts might be more useful if you prevent rather than encourage the lifestyles and conditions that create them.

That's all well said...and your gracious appreciation is also acknowledged.

Here's the rub: Looking for and implementation of systems for realistically managing this type of social problem is laudable and desirable.

"Power Boss" personalities tend to want to disregard the current "mess' and even ignore it as they pursue PROBLEM SOLVING...leaving the question of compassionate handling of the unsightly "mess" in our hands to the "clean up crew".

It's a convenient myopia that disregards the present serious social administrative problem and ends with half-assed solutions.

Almost always these short-sighted FIXERS are under qualified "do gooders" and not professional administrators.

So real fixes require a Triage mentality and practical management thought that was missing in the lofty initial thinking put forth originally.

Thanks again for your courteous reply.

ADD: I am not necessarily persuaded that this delimna is perse an issue of political persuasion but will concede by virtue of my own bias that conservatives ought to be more balanced than lousy bleeding heart liberals at just about everything under the sun.

If they are able, they do not need your help. If they say they'll solve your problems with a program, think again. One day, they'll want what's yours. "For the children. For the environment..." Don't enable them! Therefore...

Prevention is the best cure.

It is my firmly held position that a huge percentile of those on the streets are there because they made very bad decisions in life. In a healthy society, these decisions would have had far less impact because there would have been immediate social repercussions. In a healthy society a guilty conscience saves most people from negative behavior. Ridicule, fear of public shame and real punishment for bad behavior take over when the conscience doesn't quite work.

The decisions that lead to eventual homelessness are excused or even applauded in a liberal society. People are not judged. People are not held accountable. These are the causes, homelessness and other social maladies are the result.

Tough (really tough) love is the only way to deal with this group of people. Not patronization. And there need to be paths open to them to recover their dignity and independence. But if they choose not to take those paths, well....

The other percentile, the ones who truly can't help themselves, can be taken care of with dignity, but not by letting them roam the streets in unsupervised stupors. And the violent need to be locked up.

Pray that your higher power relieves you of the burden of "self" and grants you the wisdom to regard others as people and not cattle.

Your "rule-based thinking", full of little laws for others, has you playing God, a role you are ill-equipped for but seemingly unaware of.

Taking on the "burdens of the world" is not a requirement for most ordinary souls. Those feeling the urge to do so might consider dropping to their knees for guidance and wisdom and large doses of humility.

On the other hand however, is the joy inexpressable, of turning from issues of self concern to the sharing of love of others. If it is your mission, may you find it now.

On this day of remembrance of Love and Motherly wisdom be of good will.
