A gas pipeline exploded in Nigeria as villagers collected fuel from the ruptured conduit, killing between 150 and 200 people and leaving charred bodies scattered around the blast site.
Dozens of burned corpses could be seen lying on the ground at the waterside village of Ilado, about 45 kilometers east of Lagos, Nigeria's main city, and police said dozens had perished in the flames.

tragic
"A gas pipeline exploded in Nigeria as villagers collected fuel from the ruptured conduit"
I am sure they were not stealing the gas. Just collecting it.
Some people collect stamps, Nigerians collect gas.
Prayers for those that perished. What makes it so much more tragic is that the oil companies will use this as an excuse to raise prices another $.50 at the gas pump.
These people drill holes in a pressurized pipeline in the night. It doesn't take long before somebody gets hurt. A friend sent me photos of a pipeline with corks stuck in it. The pielines are only a few feet below ground, some places the pipe is above the soil. My friend said "its as desperate and poverty stricken as Haiti..."
They steal...we pay.
I had a friend who worked for the Ford Foundation, and there was a phrase used among aid workers: WAWA, meaning West Africa Wins Again. This was used when, for example, the Africans had gotten tired of delivering the mail and would simply dump the entire mailbag, including the checks from aid agencies, into a convenient river.
Actually, you could probably abbreviate it to AWA, Africa Wins Again. It's very sad, but the continent is dysfunctional. Africa is somewhat like Northern Europe after the Romans had briefly colonized it and then left upon the collapse of Rome. However, Northern Europe had the Church to send missionaries and pass on some of Rome's secular governance knowlege (particularly the rejection of tribalism, which was a problem in Northern Europe, too) along with the Faith. Poor Africa has nothing but dictators, Muslims, and the UN.
