Senators agree on 'amnesty' proposal
The Washington Times ^ | May 12, 2006 | Charles Hurt

Senate leaders reached an agreement yesterday on immigration reform legislation that would strengthen border security but also would allow millions of illegal aliens who have been in the U.S. for two years or longer to apply for citizenship. Derided by conservatives as "amnesty," the proposal could be amended but senators on both sides of the aisle say they doubt it will be dramatically altered. "Senate Republicans are united in their commitment to an open and full debate on multiple amendments," said a statement from seven Republicans who represent the full spectrum of positions on immigration reform. "We are willing to put differences aside so we can get on with the important work to be done securing our borders and grappling with the 12 million illegal immigrants currently living in our country," said the group that included Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. "We are also in agreement that efforts to curtail the debate prematurely will only derail this process. We call on Senate Democrats to allow an open debate and votes on this complex and challenging issue," the statement read. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, with whom Mr. Frist has been negotiating for weeks, said he "welcomed" the return of the thorny bill to the floor.

As I said, they did use the word "expel" too - maybe Spiff will verify - he and I just disagree about the difference between 4.8 million and 6 million. See you later.

I believe the quote in context was OTHERWISE law-abiding illegals.

You know like, otherwise law-abiding burglars, otherwise law-abiding rapists, otherwise law-abiding murderers.

See how the word "otherwise" fixes it?

"otherwise law-abiding burglars, otherwise law-abiding rapists, otherwise law-abiding murderers" go to jail IMO.

I have all but come to the conclusion that the Senate's rules are fundamentally at odds with democracy. When one Senator (1!!) can stall virtually any bill at any time, that is not democracy. It is tyranny of the minority.

They are the rules of the Senate and Reid can object to the amendments if he chooses

Many like to blame and slam the Republicans and the President because of that .. when the truth is .. They don't twist, bend and abuse rules and like the Democrats do

Some may find that a fault of the GOP

I do not

With that said .. it is possible to beat the Dems at their own game without stooping to their level .. but to do so, our side needs to get there act together and use the brains god gave them and play it smart.

United we stand .. divided we fall

What definition of "legal" are you using? I am using the one used by the Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary branches of the federal government.

"Some people here want to throw all the employers in jail too - how many of those do you think it will take for a recession to hit?"

Do you honestly think that arresting a few managers is going to trigger a recession??? Somehow I don't think Tyson foods is going to shut down because it loses a bunch of poultry slicers and some upper management.

"Also, "global" means the entire world - what if China starts shipping everything to Mexico rather than the U.S.?"

Laughable. The "entire world" isn't involved. Who in Mexico is going to BUY all those Chinese goods??? Or do you mean that they would then be tran-shipped from Mexico to the US??

""Expelled" includes everything from formal deportations to voluntarily departures. So, yes, it is true."

Sorry, but I don't believe it. More likely this is the number for the "catch and release" program at INS. I'd like to know exactly how many ACTUALLY GOT SENT BACK to the home country. Relying on them to "agree to deport themselves" by signing a paper is NOT real deportation.

From your link:

"Since President Bush took office, agents have apprehended and sent home more than 6 million people entering the country illegally - including more than 400,000 with criminal records."

You obviously have VERY poor comprehension of the English language. The word "apprehended" is NOT equivalent to the word "deported".

Quite a few - what I have not been able to find is how many returned (and maybe are even caught again) right away.
