PRINCETON, NJ -- President George W. Bush's job approval rating has reached yet another new low for his administration, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll. The poll, conducted May 5-7, 2006, finds that 31% of Americans approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president while 65% disapprove. Bush's approval rating is down three percentage points from last weekend, which is not a statistically significant drop, but has shown a six point decline from early April and a 12 point decline since the start of the year. The decline in Bush's approval rating has accelerated in the past month or so. His ratings were stable in the low 40% range in January and early February, then declined slightly into the mid- to upper-30% range through the beginning of April. Since April, Bush's ratings have fallen six points.

yes, but a disenchanted base does not turn out for elections in the numbers necessary to win. If a voter stays home, it's irrelevant if that voter is more likely to choose Bush over Kerry (or insert your candidates here). Republicans need to start providing a reason to vote FOR them--to motivate people to get out of their houses on election day.

"The myth of Reagan is exactly that. A myth. He was a great president because he could say the right things at the right time to make the country feel better. It is beyond dispute that Reagan beats Bush hands down when it comes to communication BUT Bush beats Reagan in every conservative category anyone cares to offer. "

Perhaps you point is that a president never does what each one of us wants..but with BUSH having both the house and senate..he gave us expanded Dept Ed, Big Spending, this open borders fiasco, loss of property rights - what has BUSH Said or done on that issue? Loss of free speech which he signed into law..no Bush has very real problems with conservatives and nary a veto in sight.

I read the threads on my Miers. Hell, I wrote some of them. Many conservatives (probably not half, but a significant percentage) didn't have a problem with her, at least until we found out about that pro-abortion rant she gave a few years back at a speech.

If Bush fixed the border, none of the rest of it would matter. Build a wall. Do not give illegals amnesty or guest worker status. Hell, just build the wall and do some bureaucratic hemming and hawing on what to do with illegals already here. Even that would be enough to allow the GOP to soundly crush the dems come november.

Forget the Gallup Poll...

Bush prefers the "gallop pole," anyway....

Ok...can anyone give me some help? My friend and I continually argue over what good this administration has done. I can talk all day about security and he scoffs.

His arguments:
Education- Leave no child behind is such a failure that states are tying to opt out of it
Energy - gas prices ridiculous, and all the administration did was support a pro-oil energy bill in Congress.
Medical care - nothing being done to generate a solution
Social Security - nothing done
Security - "you must be joking"
Running the government-FDA failed, FEMA failed, CIA reorg failed...
Spending - largest budget deficit ever

Iraq - the biggie.

You guys here always have great rebuttals and I may add, are much more informed than I...can you help me out? Actually, I am getttng tired of trying to defend when it seems like the whole country is against us.

Years of a relentlessly Bush-hating press, which hides every good piece news, gives the man credit for nothing, and on the other side a President who lacks the rhetorical skills to fight back against them, as by the way, did Truman. But will America give it up to the Democrats? I DON'T THINK SO...

He has not done it in 6yrs why do any of us think he will in the next 2yrs?? Open borders is what he seems to want for what reason I am dumbfounded to explain.

never mind the soaring gas prices- which they have not combated the lame-stream-media's ignorance in blaming the WH....

I must tell you, at the risk of being lynched- I support GWB, have fought liberals in the streets with Protest Warrior on his behalf and will continue to do so...but I am dissapointed in the lack of leadership I have seen from him and most of the Republicans on Capitol Hill the past six months..

We are lucky the rats have no ideas and are in this "hate-Bush" mode. If they ever had a Newt Gingrich on their side we'd be toast...

The new Iraqi government will go into place this week. Troop drawdown will start immediately after. This will matter.

The perception IS, a 7.5 pound bass caught in his pond...is more important than action regarding our borders, deficit, oil supply, taxes, voter fraud....shall I go on?

I hope he has a plan....or it's over for the Republicans....we won't vote Democrap...but the base will stay home.

What in heaven's sake is he thinking?

Your post has reminded me of the reasons why I like President Bush:

Bush has signed no anti-gun laws in his political career.

Bush hasn’t raised taxes in any way .

Bush has stayed the course and held to his promise not to back down.

Bush hass appointed 2 Conservatives and numerous lower court Conservatives.

Bush pushed for and got the late term abortion ban passed.

I don't agree with President Bush on everything. But I don't agree with any politician on everything. President Bush has done and is doing a great job during very difficult times for our country.

They will rev up the base, even they understand this, so we get energized for the election cycle. Afterwords, we will be forgotten, as we always are, until the next election cycle. I would vote for President Bush again because the alternative is much worse, but when this is the best I can do for reasons, the Party is in trouble. I have been a Conservative and Republican for 26 years, and I believe we have squandered much of our political capital in defending this Administration for actions that are inexplicable.

Fox News very recently showed that Bush's numbers had actually improved.

Generally though, approvals are down all across the board for both Republicans and Democrats. How could the President be a sole exception?

The good news is that will ALL approvals down there is a very very good opportunity for the President to improve his numbers and lift the Republicans with him but don't forget with the elections in November, the effort to improve the numbers has to be timed perfectly for maximum effect.

If Bush works hard and the Republicans spend their money now to improve his poll numbers, that might make you feel good but it would be timed too early and leave maximum window of opportunity for the Democrats to counter campaign and drag the numbers down again.

Is there an election today? No. Sit tight and amuse yourself till the time is right. I suggest you stop reading the Democrats Attack Dog AP polls.

His JAR would go up 50 points and the GOP will breeze to victory if he CLOSED THE BORDER NOW!
