Wyoming House Seatin Play (what is wrong with Wyoming?)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | May 8, 2006 | Rasmussen

Posted on 05/08/2006 12:05:36 PM PDT by balch3

(Snip)

The one interesting statewide race is the battle for Wyoming's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Wyoming is one of seven sparsely-populated states which send only a single congressman to that chamber. Since 1942, with one exception, the state's Member-at-Large has been a Republican.

But Representative Barbara Cubin, first elected in 1994, now leads Democratic challenger Gary Trauner by only four percentage points, 47% to 43% and the GOP can hardly take her reelection for granted. This becomes one more contest to which the GOP may have to devote resources during an election year in which the party is proving especially vulnerable.

Congressional Quarterly has just revised its assessment of the seat from "safe" to "Republican favored."

Representative Cubin is viewed favorably by 49%, unfavorably by 47%. Trauner is viewed favorably by 34%, unfavorably by 28%. He's regarded as an unknown by 38%. Only 5% are Not Sure what to think of Cubin.

1) These MAY . . . get it? MAY . . . polls are all over the map. Some of them represent primary mud-fests where Republicans are throwing slime at each other while Dems sit back and laugh.

2) I do know that Burns is not doing as well there as he should be, and perhaps he's dragging her down. Still, it's MAY.

3) It's Rasmussen. I think he was pretty good on the presidential level in 04, but I think his statewide polling was poor. Someone who knows better can correct me if I'm wrong.

aaaaaaaggggghhh.

Actually Burns is from Montana, not Wyoming.

I think she is so close because she promised to limit herself to six terms. She was elected in 1994. Therefore she is now running for her seventh term, breaking that pledge.

That may be why she's so close. Wyoming has always struck me as a "no-nonsense" type of state.

Man, don't you know? It's all those illegal immigrants! The GOP base is so, well, angry right now. The Rats need to take over so all those those RINOs learn a lesson. What this country really needs is two years of calling Nancy Pelosi Speaker and Harry Reid majority leader. Then comes Bush impeachment proceedings, repealing the war on terror, repealing the tax cuts, blocking further judicial nominations, and other unimportant stuff. After all, nothing really matters to the angry people except immigration.

Although I don't know Cubin's immigration position, she is no RINO.

Wyoming has increasingly been populated by the mega-rich hollywood types as well as media types. Heavy concentrations around Jackson. The Great and Beautiful Stat of Wyoming, sadly, is going blue.

I was being a bit sarcastic. If she is leading in May even in the current political environment, she will win in a walk in November. I am not concerned about Wyoming going blue. I am much more concerned about the angry people ruining the country for the rest of us in other parts of the country.

Why do you think the Senate is out to lunch? Aren't all those points you mentioned important to the Senate?

My error. Good point. This has actually affected a couple of Republicans who lied. Of course, Dems who break their promises are never held accountable.

If she were smart, she would come out and apologize. Make a big deal out of it. Throw herself on their mercy. I think that would go a long way.

That's a very good question. In fact, the entire Congress is out to lunch, but especially the Senate. It isn't just the angry anti-immigration people who are angry with them. So are many of the rest of us. They spend our money like drunken sailors, largely on crap that only Democrats support (e.g. the huge expansion in Medicare). Their reaction to the rising gasoline prices has been decidedly Carteresque. Don't even get me started on their reaction to Katrina. And their hostility to the Bush Administration has been only slightly less intense than that of the moonbat left. Where the heck did that suddenly come from?

Although I don't know Cubin's immigration position, she is no RINO.

Cubin is definately not a RINO and is one of the original members of Tom Tancredo's immigration reform caucus. She has a nearly perfect voting record from NumbersUSA.

I will be voting for Cubin again this fall because I like the way she votes.

But she is not without problems and has always been challengable. Her biggest problem is that she is dumb as a post. I have met her several times and she is not at all impressive. She has been in Congress for more than a decade and has managed to amass no real power. By now she should be serving on (if not chairing) some powerful committees and she is not. Further, for the past several years she has been kind of MIA. I think her husband had bad health problems followed by her having health problems. A lot of people in Wyoming are just kind of disappointed with her.

For myself, I am not at all happy with Wyoming's Senators. Both have mediocre immigration records and both voted for both No Child Left Behind and the Medicare Prescription Drug Bill. They are just big government socialists who like to pretend they are conservative. I'm thinking hard about voting against Craig Thomas in November and I'll definitely be voting against him if he has a Republican challenger in the primaries.

The House passed a very good immigration bill, that included over 600 miles of fence. The Senate could modify certain parts and we'd be on our way, but the Senate has come out with something 180 degrees from the House. I believe they are only interested in maintaining the status quo and have deliberately sabotaged immigration reform.

I think too many GOP Senators spend more time trying to please Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself).

I don't understand? Is the republican running some sort of a RINO? I can guarantee the democrat is not a conservative. What accounts for these numbers?

"Wyoming has increasingly been populated by the mega-rich hollywood types as well as media types. Heavy concentrations around Jackson. The Great and Beautiful Stat of Wyoming, sadly, is going blue"

That is nonsense...Jackson (Jackson Hole) has a total population of 8647...If every man, woman and child was able and did vote democrat, the other 300,000 voters would lverwhelm them. The entire vote in the last Teton County Election was under 4000.

No, if the state has a problem, it is either with the candidate or too smug a state republican organization.

With all due respect...it is not nonsense. It isn't just their vote in and of itself that has the impact. Their donations and "causes" provide additional influence.

I lived in Jackson during the 70's. Then, it was the millionaires buying out the ranchers to build their dream home. A friend of mine who was born and raised in Jackson and runs a river guide outfit said it's now the billionaires buying out the millionaires. He hardly recognizes his own town.

Barbara Cubin isn't all that popular even among some fellow Republicans. If you look at all the poll results, it shows that Craig Thomas is polling about 30 points ahead.

I saw a blog site in which a self-described Republican described Cubin as lazy and not very good at constituant service. Also, I've heard that her attendance record isn't all that great.

Yeah, I've heard these comments before. Her re-election totals generally aren't spectactular.
