Lillian Gertrud Asplund, the last American survivor of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, has died, a funeral home said Sunday. She was 99.
Asplund, who was just 5 years old, lost her father and three brothers -- including a fraternal twin -- when the "practically unsinkable" ship went down in the North Atlantic after hitting an iceberg. She died Saturday at her home in Shrewsbury, said Ronald E. Johnson, vice president of the Nordgren Memorial Chapel in Worcester, Mass.
Asplund's mother and another brother, Felix, who was 3, also survived the Titanic sinking in the early morning of April 15, 1912.
Barbara Joyce West
(born May 24, 1911) Barbara Joyce West was born in Bournemouth, Dorset, England and was 10 months and 22 days old when the Titanic sank. Her family boarded Titanic at Southampton as second-class passengers. Barbara, her mother and older sister Constance escaped on one of the lifeboats (possibly 10). Barbara's father, Edwy Arthur West, died in the sinking. Barbara West married in 1952 and currently lives in Truro, England
Elizabeth Gladys "Millvina" Dean
(born February 2, 1912) Eliza Gladys Millvina Dean was 2 months and 13 days old when the Titanic sank. She was the youngest of the 2,223 people aboard the liner. Millvina and her family boarded Titanic as third-class passengers at Southampton with the intention of emigrating to Wichita, Kansas. Millvina, her mother and older brother Bertram escaped the ship on lifeboat 10; her father died in the sinking. Millvina never married and now lives in Southampton, England. She is the youngest of the living survivors and the last survivor who attends Titanic-related events
Karl Rove, 1912: "Yea, some of you may have escaped my diabolical iceberg, but just wait, just wait. I'll get every last one of you! (Maniacal laughter)"
Rest in Peace Liliian They all are waiting for you
lol
Both of those were infants at the time and have no memory of the event. What made Ms. Asplund unique was that she was a five-year-old child in 1912 and therefore she was the last survivor to have any memory of that night who could recall the actual events. The other two were but babies.
"Near, far, whereEVEEEEr you are...."
It's Sunday so I'll be good and not post a link to Celine Dion singing "My heart will go on".
Just as another off-the-wall comment, I read a list of the top 15 rejected theme songs for "Titanic", and my personal favorite was this one:
"99 Bottles of beer on the Wall ... the Floor .... the Wall .... the Ceiling .... the Other Wall"
Don't forget the twirling of the handlebar mustache, too.
Prayers from TX.
I wonder if we would see such a display of chivalry today. I suspect we would not.
"Titanic was one of the last major historical events where chivalry played the major role in deciding who lived and who died. Most of the women and children survived. Most of the men did not.
I wonder if we would see such a display of chivalry today. I suspect we would not."
If the libs were in charge, only the "poor and oppressed" would get in the lifeboats.
The Passenger manifest is almost complete.
"If the libs were in charge, only the "poor and oppressed" would get in the lifeboats. "
Nor without the Liberals themselves!
Only if there were enough lifeboats left over after the liberals claimed their seats, spare seats and spare lifeboats.
I join you in prayers for this lady's family.
May she rest in peace.
