Women shouldn't be in this position for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is their physical strength. PCism has struck again.
Linebackers should be big and burly, the fireman who carries me out of a burning building should be big and burly and Hooters waitresses should be.................
Puts a new spin on the old saying, Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? ("Who will guard the guards themselves?").
You're right. What woman in her right mind would want to be a prison guard?? Words fail me.
As a woman, I just don't get why a female would want to be a prison guard, except perhaps at a womens' prison. I can understand administrative and medical staff including women, but there is no reason to put a female guard in an environment where she must directly deal with hardened male criminals.
That said, I hope this can be resolved without injury to the guard taken hostage - and that the hostage taker be dealt with appropriately.
I dont know..My sister was a city of Pittsburgh Cop. She was about 5,5 and 150 lbs. She was a tough person who i wouldnt want to tangle with.
I knew a lot of guys who were weak and wimpy..depends on the person.
PS..My sister quit the force to start a family. She says she would rather deal with perps than five year olds. Go Figure
Being a deputy sheriff and having worked both the jails and patrol I can tell you for a fact that 95% of the women on the job are just as tough and capable as I am at 6'0 220 lbs.
Most of the females I work with would kick anyones ass who said they should be in this line of work becuase of their gender.
"but there is no reason to put a female guard in an environment where she must directly deal with hardened male criminals."
There is one: To "prove" that there is no real difference between men and women.
"What woman in her right mind would want to be a prison guard??"
To earn a decent paycheck?
I am a female and I work in a male prison in Huntsville Texas. Huntsville is nothing but prisons and that is the only place for people that live in this area to find a job with retirement/health benefits. I agree wholeheartly that it isnt a place for females. The inmates are constantly harrassing female officers in one way or another. I worry about a hostage scenerio all the time. Most of the time things go well. Things like this happen because the administration wont let the Officers punish these inmates when they do get out of hand. If there is no punishment for doing wrong within the prison walls, then there is no reason for the inmate to act right. The higher up ranking Officers spend more time making rules and punishments for the Officers and less punishments to the inmates. Being in prison is a holiday for some of these weirdOs. There is no deterrant to crime. Everything is upside down. Each prison unit in this area is a time bomb waiting to go off.
Prison guards should be men (except maybe at women's prisons). They should be big weight-lifting-King-Kong-Godzilla types.
Anyone who has to control 100 prisoners while unarmed had better be some kind of steroid monster.
Most COs have to pass physical requirements to get the job. If a woman can pass them, then what's the problem?
The problem is that some giant SOB who spent the last 20 years lifting weights at taxpayer expense can overpower her in a New York minute. He can take her hostage at will.
She won't be able to do a thing to stop the monster.
We need monster-sized guys to guard the monsters. That is the problem.
And they can't overpower male guards?

Feed yourself this bullshit but spare us, if you please.
Cops die because the weak females out there with them can't hack it and are only there in the first place because standards were lowered.
I've been to cop houses all over NYC, Jersy and LI and the biggest females I have seen (rare and far between) would'nt be much of a problem for any guy going postal.
The VAST majority of the females are short in stature and tiny when they aren't ludicrously obese.
The other part of the "lets all make believe girls can hack ir" PC rubbish is that GUYS who have no business on a police force because of their size are on the street as well.
Just this week in NYC I saw a male cop who couldn't possibly have been more than 120 soaking wet. My eye told me he was probably pretty tough but any guy I hung out with in High school could have literally picked him up and thrown him before their 15th birthday.
PC is a sick stupid joke that has cost cops their lives and WILL continue to do so.
I'm just now learning this is a female corrections officer (corrections officers were called "bulls" by the inmates when I worked there in the late 1960's)!!!
I kept searching my feeble memory banks for when they established a state prison in Sacramento and I find that kind of reporting VERY irritating!
I listened nearly all morning, off and on, to the Rush replay even after the Presidents message, the Governors blather and even the early Saturday morning fishing show!!!
Looks like that ole "equal" thing didn't work out so well now did it cupcake.
I'm sure their are tough women cops out there, and I'm sure they are a whole lot smarter than most of the people they deal with, and hopefully they are better organized, and of course they do have the law on their side.
So, I'm not saying the size disadvantage rules them out from being a cop, but if it comes to a fight they are at a huge disadvantage. That's just a fact.
You go girl! Atta boy girl! I like the cut of your jib!!!
