WASHINGTON - Angry conservatives are driving the approval ratings of President Bush and the GOP-led Congress to dismal new lows, according to an AP-Ipsos poll that underscores why Republicans fear an Election Day massacre.
Six months out, the intensity of opposition to Bush and Congress has risen sharply, along with the percentage of Americans who believe the nation is on the wrong track.
The AP-Ipsos poll also suggests that Democratic voters are far more motivated than Republicans. Elections in the middle of a presidents term traditionally favor the party whose core supporters are the most energized.

"Don't let anybody kid you; he couldn't have been elected anywhere for anything."
Local dog catcher?
Don't tempt him!
he wasnt a serious candidate...
I respected him and supported him when he ran for senate in MD. For some reason he thought losing to Barbara Mulkulski qualified him to be taken seriously as a Presidential Candidate.
he was a serious figure in the 1980s but since has marginalized himself and is a laughing stock
Very good analysis all the way around.
I drive mental patients for a living, and they lap up SSI disability payments and just live it up off the working people, smoking and drinking and getting free everything, including medication. You and me will work to our graves to pay these people and half of Mexico.
During a ride recently, one perfectly fit guy who knows a doctor was telling another patient he was thinking about moving to California, so he could get a "pay increase."
Balderdash.
As for these Rino Bushbots around here, they'll be telling us about the great economy when gas hits 5 bucks a gallon. Reminds me of the Carter people in 1979-80: "Nothing is the president's fault."
I agree 100%.
P.S. Do you have any ideas on what people (average man and woman) can do beside just vote? Basically I'm just a voter. I don't really have the time to do a whole lot else. Are you thinking along traditional lines of letter writing and sending money to conservative groups or do you have or heard of new ideas to sway them to the will of the majority?
Question.
Did you ever hear of a man called Ronald Reagan?
He was a governor of a state that is widely known for its liberalism and he was a conservative. He then ran as president as a conservative, governed as a conservative (despite a mostly democrat congress) and then won a second election in a landslide with 49 states (out of 50, in case you needed some perspective).
Rick Santorum won as a conservative. He's behind now that he is not. BTW, his faux conservatism became apparent when he help to defeat a real conservative by helping one of the most liberal Republicans.
Ron Paul, a libertarian Republican wins in a mostly democrat district by standing solidly on the Constitution. Tom Coburn is a solid conservative and won in a majority Democrat district. He term limited himself in the House and then ran for the Senate and he was elected as a conservative.
The problem isn't that America doesn't lean conservative, but that the GOP crushes conservative candidates in the primary.
That is not the way I see it.
BTW, when Santorum came from behind it was (again) when he ran as a conservative, voted as a conservative, and had the hearty support of conservatives.
In the last 2 years, his record sucks and he has alienated his base on just about every issue. He still talks a good game, especially at fund raisers, but his actions fail to back up those words.
He claims to be pro life but supports pro abortion candidates whose votes negate his. He claims to be pro gun, but supports gun grabbers who cancel out his vote a lot of the time even though he is only 'with us' 64% over the last ten years.
He claimed to be a conservative, but has since emulated the 'compassion' of Senor Bush and the spending habits of Arlen Specter.
His last victory was by less than one percent. He has lost the support of many of those who get out the vote and give him money.
Don't count on a 'comeback' this time. He dug his own grave and dared us to push him into it.
By not voting for the democrats' surrogate, you are by default voting for the democrat.
You mentioned the ramifications of 8 years of Clinton. What has Senor Bush done to undo anything that Clinton did? What Executive Orders has he written to override Clinton's?
He's been too busy rehabilitating Clinton's image that he has forgotten those 'ramifications.'
A lot of people crying today and saying they wont go to the polls will show up there when they see the trash democrats put up against us. I believe the Presidency is safe, when I see hat the dems offer. Hillary Kerry, Maybe a rerun of Al Gore.No person with a conscience could sleep night without voting against any of those three. It is the house and the senate that are introuble abd that because of the cowardice of the elected republicans, Those in office today have no one to blame but themselves.
PMSNBC wet dream trying to drive down turnout in november.
Sorry folks but this broken glass republican has learned the leasson of turn out.
Immigration is a dead issue and the balance on Bush is more good than bad.
Thats why I think voting is stil useful, is it doesn't take much time. So the effort versus reward is worth it, especially at the local level.. where I think democracy actually works very well.
Here are some examples of other things.. Unionization, the workers organize for better wages and working conditions. Instead of voting for a politician they hope will raise the minimum wage and increase regulations on working conditions. The power the union workers have is they can just not work, and wait for key moments where they have a stronger bargaining position.
Christian organizations could do the same thing if they wanted.
But that is only the beginning.. Imagine you are a manager you can choose to only hire people who share your views. Its especially effective in the government itself. Thats why the leftwing people have such control in the government and organizations like churches. Lenin's books teach how you organize and promote each other. So it doesn't take long before the entire upper hierarchy is people who share the same general beliefs.
Sending money to gruops like Cato and heritage foundation imo is also worthwhile. Especially when the politicians are limiting what individuals can send. What they are doing is grooming young kids with potential who share their views.. Then getting them very high up internships and positions early in their careers. So they have a huge advantage over their peers who are not connected.
Then of course there is so many things we do that shape the marketplace.. Like if you are in a religious group, and a store starts carrying things you think hurt the community.. Boycotting unless they meet demands. Or if you are smart making small demands over time that they can meet.
Once you start thinking in this way you can think of lots of other ways to influence events, without going through the politicians at all.
