Covenant News
Two walks occurred in Los Angeles, and Greg Yee and Walter Contreras found themselves near the front of the second event, walking alongside Cardinal Roger Mahoney. They were subsequently joined by other Covenant pastors participating in the march, which police say attracted some 500,000 individuals.
Yee is the Pacific Southwest Conference director of church leadership and development. Contreras is the director of church planting. In the accompanying photo, Contreras is pictured walking with the cardinal. To see additional photos, please visit Demonstrations.
In Chicago, Paul Corner, the associate pastor of Christian formation at North Park Covenant Church, carried a sign that read, "No human being is illegal." Corner says his work has included ministering at times to undocumented people.
Police estimated the crowd at more than 400,000. "It was very celebrative and exciting," says Corner, who was joined by six students from North Park Theological Seminary.
Corner believes being at the march as a Covenanter was important because, "Our history is an immigrant church. Christians have a biblical mandate to care for the sojourner in our land, and Jesus tells us that whatever we do to one of the least of these, we have done to him."
Yee says it is important for people to remember that the immigration debate extends beyond Hispanics. "The second largest undocumented group is the Chinese," he says. "The Chinese were the first ethnic group to be barred from this country. Thus they became the first illegal aliens and undocumented people, themselves. I choose not to forget where I've come from."
Yee says the undocumented population today is comprised of people "who have become invisible to mainstream America, a whole group of people are being ignored and taken advantage of. It's time to bring all those skeletons out of the closet.
"What's awful is the way it has played out - people are latching on to the extremes," Yee continues. "We're tending to latch on to these extremes that are not being helpful."
There was no polarization on the platform on which religious leaders assembled at the end of the Los Angeles march to address and pray for the crowd. Contreras stood next to a rabbi and an imam.
Does this church also fly the Mexican flag?
Just because someone claims to be an Evangelical Christian, doesn't mean they actually are. Actions mean far more than words.
Is this the same 'Evangelical' group that is alarmed about 'Global Warming'

Sojourner? I don't think encouraging a hugh number of folks to enter the country illegally and break some very serious laws was mentioned in the Sermon on the Mount. Couldn't find it in the the Ten Commandments either.
But I did find mention of a 'millstone.'
No laws, no order. No order, chaos.
To understand the Sovereignty of the Kingdom, you must learn what the Sovereignty of a nation is. If you ignore that, you will be an 'undocumented' 'sojourner' wherever you go. A man without a country. Better you were born with gills.
This Mahoney has a screw loose. The Pope better reel him in.
There are legitimate Refugees and then there are these illegal criminals who are not fleeing persecution, but are merely persuing greed. Their lives are not in danger in Mexico.
Mahoney should go back and read the bible stories of what a nation is, and what a refugee is, and what an invasion is.
"Mahoney should go back and read the bible stories of what a nation is, and what a refugee is, and what an invasion is."
Let me repeat that for you in case someone missed it.
He's a denomination leader. Keep your eyes open for this up and coming denomination. They've got dollar signs in their eyes and have linked up with socialist gospel preacher Jim Wallis of Sojourners.
A related story on this subject from them:
Central Conference Approves Immigration Resolution
PRINCETON, IL (May 3) - Delegates to the 120th Central Conference Annual Meeting passed a resolution that calls for churches "to faithfully welcome both documented and undocumented immigrants with the love and peace of Christ as well as stand in solidarity as a people who bear good news in thought, word and deed."Delegates also received three new churches and approved a plan to raise $13 million to support conference ministries.
After much debate and votes on three amendments to the resolution, the delegates approved the document 41-16. Adam Phillips, a member of North Park Covenant Church, brought the resolution.
Two amendments failed by a narrow margin:
- An amendment to remove the words "both documented and undocumented" failed by one vote.
- The document also states, "Furthermore, we will seek to find creative ways to work with immigrant work centers, citizenship training groups, and other church and parachurch organizations in our own communities." An amendment that would have included the words to "patriate undocumented immigrants" failed by nine votes. The resolution would have read, "Furthermore, we will seek to find creative ways to patriate undocumented workers..."
Delegates approved a third amendment that called on the conference to submit the resolution to the denomination annual meeting rather than a document that was "similar."
"The resolution comes out of our church's work with immigrants," Phillips said. That includes involvement with the Albany Park Worker's Center.
Some delegates emphasized the non-political language on an issue that many believe has become "politicized." Other delegates complained that the resolution was discussed when many of the delegates already had left the meeting. Others said the remaining delegates did not have enough time to reflect on the resolution, which was handed out at the meeting.
Conference Supt. Jerome Nelson said the resolution had been on the agenda, but was not in the delegate packets because final wording was being worked out after they were assembled. Although he wished the resolution had been printed earlier, he noted that anyone could have brought a resolution from the floor for a vote....
So they are trying to ram this politically correct stuff down everyone's throats. I know plenty of very conservative people that aren't aware of what is going on in the Evangelical Covenant denomination and they need to start being warned and paying attention, withdrawing their financial support for this apostasy.
Sorry. Thanks for the reminder.
There are a lot from this denomination that would probably support the effort to stop global warming. However that 'group' to which you refer is made up of many denominations.
You know that and I know that, but there are a lot of dupes in the congregations still supporting this church. I was one of them (even though I was an outspoken conservative) for years, until I realize they were partaking in a whole lot of doublespeak and dialectical consensus building. Looking back it seems pretty clear, but I didn't see it going in, and I was looking for it HARD. Many others just trust their leadership and don't actually look for or understand the danger signals, and I want them to be warned.
I wouldn't be surprised. We didn't have any flag in church for several years until several of us made a point to buy and donate one. I still think there are some who grumbled about that.
BTW it's not Catholic. This is a supposedly 'conservative' (I was told so by our Conference leader himself!) protestant evangelical denomination.
And the president of the denomination Glenn Palmberg is just as bad. I watched a clip from his interview on FoxNews before the last election. He's a johnny-one-note on "feeding the poor" -- everything they asked him about, he tied back to how it takes away entitlements for the poor. And then he proceeded to poo poo people who have one or two pet issues like gay marriage and abortion. (He didn't seem to think gay marriage was a big deal btw).
See clip here:

And another article here:
Understood. We're going to see more of this, going forward. Evangelical Christians have long been recognized as a key conservative voting bloc, standing in the way of further "progressive" changes in our country, and so expect to see all manner of misdirection, coming from avowed leftists who are only seeking to sow dissent and deceive. Global warming? Check. Illegal aliens? Check. No-strings wealth redistribution disguised as charitable good works? Check. Gay marriage? Check. I'm sure you can think of many more.
These people are not merely misguided, they're quite literally the wolf in sheep's clothing. Note that any church openly advocating conservative political beliefs is immediately threatened with a loss of tax exempt status. But, we find that so-called separation of church and state no longer applies when the politics being pushed from the pulpit are socialist in nature.
I wouldn't attend a church that had misgivings about putting both the Stars and Stripes and the Christian flags. If I ever heard grumblings about an American flag in a church, I would go ballistic. 'Nuff said.
Evangelicals were against the Iraq war and protest side by side with communist groups. I don't know how churches can side with athiests.
Yep... I'm glad I'm out.
I do see the point in not revering the flag so much that we start worshipping the country, but...
