Negroponte strikes me more as a "go along, get along" type of guy. not one to rock the boat. which is not what we need.

.........there is big trouble coming. it could be one of many things,........

...and what would be just a couple of those "many" things?

The glass is always half-full on my computer. I think this is much ado about nothing.

- we know that is a significant liberal faction inside the CIA, a 5th column. it may well be that Goss didn't feel he was getting the support he needed to root it out, so he called it quits. and quite abruptly.

- some scandal is set to break.

- some intelligence lapse is about to become apparent.

Let's me flip the question on you - what GOOD things do you think this could signal? do you really think this is nothing - that without a hint in advance, Goss decided to bag it today and they put together his exit photo op with the President, and just sent him on his way? and this was done on a day when they knew the MSM news cycle would be leading with the Kennedy incident?

Sounds like a classic power struggle between Goss and AfricanAmerican-ponte. I think the good guy lost here.

I think it was a power struggle between Goss and Negraponte (sp?) and Goss lost out.

The announcement of a successor could be named as early as Monday leads me to believe this was not as "sudden" as it seems.

Then, maybe this is the way Tony Snow wanted it broken and this will be the new style.

I stare at silver linings and have had my eyes glazed before. Hopefully not this time. :-)

Well, that's not the issue so much as that it was part of the payoff for some good old fashioned government largesse.

Go along, get along type of guy??

Negroponte's long history says otherwise. I think you're way off on this.

I admire Porter Goss and I wish him well. He was faced with a very tough propostion coming in (Cleaning house at the CIA and he did a fine job.) My only hope is that this was his decision exclusively. Thank you Porter Goss!

The big rumor now seems to be on the #3 guy Foggo, who is tied up in the hooker gate scandal. It wasn't Porter himself. But he was basically told to fire Foggo by Negroponte, and refused, and was handed his walking papers.

There is no suggestion in any way that Porter Goss was involved in the hooker ring. He just was loyal to a friend who was.

I'm not happy about this.

Neither am I, Howlin.
It took them about 1 and a half years, but they finally got him. With a little help from Josh Bolton (and his father?)...and Negroponte....?
I have been so PO'd that I couldn't even boot up anywhere.
How could this happen???

After all of the pathetic retired/former CIA outburst lies against Bush and Rumsfeld lately, I hope they clean that place with a squeegy and start filling CIA ranks with real Americans again.

I won't be getting out of Dodge, but I must admit the thought did occur..

This thing is VERY strange.

We don’t know much, but what we DO know is quite curious.

1. There’s lots of speculation, but the real reason seems to be VERY tightly held. That is quite unusual.

2. The head of the CIA does NOT step down this way if everything is normal. You don’t even leave a civilian job this way if everything is normal. The manner of leaving was very, very strange.

3. A turf war is very unlikely to result in a departure as sudden as this. The deposed person is eased out much more gracefully.

4. If Goss had done something horrible the President would be quite foolish to be with him when the announcement was made. Personally, I think this rules out the “Goss did something horrible” scenario.

So what’s left?

It’s speculation, but there is at least one very clear possibility: A MAJOR policy dispute about something very big and very recent.

Did Porter Goss disagree about something very important and very short term? If so, it would have to be awfully big to justify a departure this abrupt and this unexplained.

Well he did say last year in a speech that he wanted to only to stay a year, and the Pres asked him to stay longer. The speech is posted on this thread somewhere.

My only curiosity is this, did Goss want McCarthy prosecuted, the DOJ refused, and he thought, why bother?

I could see that scenario.

If this happened, I can see why Goss would quit.

But that would NOT explain leaving in this way.
