Santorum closes gap, Rendell widens lead By Brad Bumsted and David M. Brown TRIBUNE-REVIEW Thursday, May 4, 2006

HARRISBURG -- Aided by a $1-million-plus TV advertising blitz, Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell has opened a 14-point lead in his re-election campaign against Republican challenger Lynn Swann, according to the latest Pittsburgh Tribune-Review/WTAE-Channel 4 Keystone poll.

The statewide poll of 578 registered voters released today also showed U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn Hills, has pulled within six points of his likely Democratic challenger, state Treasurer Robert P. Casey Jr., of Scranton.

Hmm..if this poll were run by the Star Tribune in Minneapolis you could pretty well rest assured that Santorum was actually in the lead and Swann was in a close race.

Sorry, I still think polls are meaningless. A lot could change between now and then.

And although I haven't read it yet, I understand from a headline in the local rag that Rendell's so-called proerty tax relief plan is all but dead. Good.

This poll has some different results from other recent polls, perhaps because of asymmetric advertizing (Rendel advertizing heavily, and some special interests running attack ads on Casey).

I think it is fair to say, at this juncture, that both the Senate and the Governor races in this state will be very competitive, with the Democrats having only a slight advantage.

Let's annoy the elite media, and elect Swann Governor of Pennsylvania, Blackwell Governor of Ohio, Steele U.S. Senator from Maryland, and Butler U.S. Senator from Michigan!

Rendell, a former Philadelphia mayor, drew support from 49 percent of poll participants, compared with 35 percent for Swann, of Sewickley Heights. Independent gubernatorial hopeful Russ Diamond, of Lebanon County, garnered support from 3 percent of the respondents, while 13 percent of voters were undecided. In February, the Keystone Poll showed Swann and Rendell locked in a tight race.

I swear ... if that idiot, Russ Diamond costs us the election and gives us another 6 years of Randell

I will forever consider the 3rd party nothing but the enemy

49% for an incumbent mayor is nothing to write home about. I'd say Swannie is in a pretty decent position right now.

As a Lebanon County native, I can tell you that Russ Diamond is no idiot.

He does, however, have an enormous ego! (IMHO)

I hope, as you do, that he doesn't screw things up for Swann.

The statewide poll of 578 registered voters

Pretty small sampling...maybe they just asked enough voters to get the result they wanted, and then quit asking, LOL.

i agree but i really wish that swann and his team get their act together
it really is a poorly run operation, i hate to say that because more than anything else i want a swann victory and having a GOP governor in PA for 2008 is so critical, but right now Swann and his team are doing a not so good of a job

"578 registered voters"

I always wonder where they get this cross-section of voters. Are they a representative sampling of voters registered with each party? My guess is probably not.

I know none of these pollsters ever ask me for my opinion.

Casey's lead will be gone by fall...

Rendell has started big TV advertising buys, Swan hasn't yet... I wouldn't write too much into it.

Fast Eddie is giving away everything and the kitchen sink trying to stay in Harrisburg... we'll see what happens.

It is only the primary , the election did not even start yet. I guess Soros is afraid to lose the governors race . I bet he and Mrs ketchup had their million dollar checkbooks out. Let's look at Rendells donators and who they are. They are both unopposed why is Rendell spending money . If Santiorium can come around so can Swann, it is going to be a close fight. Remember one thing in Nov during the presidnet's race the demos bragged they were taking Pa by 20 points they only won by 2 and if the reps would have tried harder they could have won.The reps only need one thing to get out of the country clubs in this state , take to the street and work , they could win in a heart beat.If only they would listen.

You Swannie guys, keep up the good work.

We need to make it look like a real race, even though roast swann is on the menu for Thanksgiving.

I get flamed by Swann volunteers every time I bring up this little reality.

FLAME ON!!

There is an easy way to defeat Rendell just keep showing, over and over, the Philadelphia Daily News picture of him throwing snowballs at Santa Claus at the Eagles game and run a transcript of his denials under it and have the announcer say over the air..."they don't call him fast eddy for nothing"

"There is an easy way to defeat Rendell just keep showing, over and over, the Philadelphia Daily News picture of him throwing snowballs at Santa Claus at the Eagles game and run"...

You DO NOT understand the Gabones in Philly.

The last republican to run against Johnny Street Fighter made a commercial using video showing Johnny punching out a tv camera man and throwing a reporter down the stairs.

Johnny's poll numbers shot straight up.

Repubs pulled that stupid ad so fast the image came off the cellulose.

Philadelphia voters (and they do rule the state) love a guy who ain't afraid to "mix it up".

You forget that at your own peril.

Run an ad showing Ed throwing snow balls?

Philly voters would cheer.
