Air America Radio will lose its New York flagship station, WLIB-AM, on Aug. 31. While the left-leaning radio networks original lease for the Inner City station ran out March 31, AAR managed to get an extension which only lasts until Aug. 31, according to an informed source.
Through an agreement with ICBC, WLIB will be operated as a joint venture and programmed by P1, a company run by former Clear Channel and Jacor Communications executive Randy Michaels. Michaels is expected to program a progressive-talk format, but replace AARs network programming with more local programming. A likely addition to the new lineup: Ed Schultz, the left-of-center talker syndicated by P1.
To be clear, Air America will not go silent on the New York City airwaves. We do not, however, comment on hypothetical speculation, said an AAR spokesperson.

They're going to mail out FM modulators with a boosted signal to all their XM fans. That ought to give them pockets of 100ft broadcasting.

Reminds me of a scene from a
Welcome Back Kotter epi. Somebody mentions a TV channel. Kotter says something like
"The one you have to hook up the antenna to the toaster to get?"
If it they do go pirate, it might add a sort of rebellious appeal. If nothing else, they'll get noticed on the radio
newsgroups as a pirate. Might even get the attention of the Feds.
At the beginning of the year, the local AAR station went to ESPN radio, at least in the the PM. The station that had
Limbaugh before the Premier/CC deal, picked it up.
I tuned them in earlier in the week, because of the ratings thread. How anyone can listen to Randi Rhodes is beyond
my comprehension.

Guess we'll see a big push by the media to draw attention to the Fairness in Broadcasting Act or whatever it was called. Be assured that, should the Democrats regain Congress, one of their first initiatives will be to restore "the Fairness Doctrine".
It would mean the end of talk radio.

A sad day for democracy. When an independent voice like Air America is lost, we ALL lose. Doesn't matter if I don't agree with everything they say, we need the diversity of opinions represented by AL and Randi and the gang. Man, what's happened to this country when you can't have even one liberal voice in mainstream media?
OK, how'd I do? Ya buyin' it? :)
