Senate Republicans proposed a $100 rebate check for millions of taxpayers Thursday to counter high gasoline costs, but linked the assistance to drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge, assuring the measure would face stiff opposition from most Democrats.
Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee called the proposal "a bold package that will give consumers some relief" from gasoline prices that have passed $3 a gallon in many parts of the country.
"We are going to ease the burden," added Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., at a GOP news conference unveiling the measures. Frist said he hoped for a Senate vote next Tuesday.

No war for oil! No, wait, make that more war for oil! No wait, how can GWB be stealing Iraq's oil if gas costs so much. My head is spinning.....
Yes there is! There are 36 decent Republicans in the Senate, and 19 Rinos that vote mostly with 45 dims. One should not cast such a wide net. We also have many good Conservatives in the House.
LLS
Send my $100 check to the Minuteman so they can build a wall at the border.
Now THAT would REALLY be a 'bold' move. I like it! Take $100/person in oil taxes that we ALL pay--and apply to the wall. Perfect.
I don't think this has a chance in heck to get passed. However, I see this as more a political move than anything. Imagine the play this will get in the mainstream media when the Dems filibuster giving families free money and increasing the supply of oil. I'm sure that MSM will surely present the situation honestly and show the american public how much the Dems are against them......
From the article,
"Democrats, meanwhile, were assembling their own package of measures, including a proposal offered by Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., for a 60-day suspension of the 18.4 cent federal gasoline tax and the 24-cent a gallon diesel tax. He said it would provide immediate relief of $100 million a day for motorists."
THAT'S what I would have thought the REPUBLICAN'S would have done....propose reducing/getting rid of some/the tax...
While I agree with forgetting the rebate, there are two problems with your rollback. First, the taxes that go toward the highway system will simply have to come from other sources. User fees (gas taxes) are always preferable to general taxes. Second, we are currently in a high demand market, meaning that the reduction in gas taxes may not reflect an equally lower price, thereby giving our taxes to the oil companies as additional profit.
Special presidential news conference:
George Bush:
It only takes one dumb attempt to fix prices by Congress to bring back the gas lines of the 1970's.
Please, Congress, DO NOTHING!!
If we are not careful we could wind up with gas lines and higher prices.
Zackly!
We here know that the right thing would be to open exploration domestically, maybe more nuclear and refineries. None of these will do anything in the short term, however.
So What do they come up with? $100 rebate checks! Ugh!
Agreed. They took jobs that no American would do.
Typical anti American politician:
When do you see the impact of your proposal at the pump?
There are lots of ways to ease the pain of high gas.
I went into the local Citgo gas station at the four corners. I electric power was out so I needed gas for my generator. I asked the clerk for $5.00 worth of gase. She cocked her behind, lifted her leg, farted and then gave me a receipt.
I guess you need to specify what type of gas you need these days.
And state lottery schemes help pay for education. Right?
The effective progressiveness or regressiveness of a use tax is irrelevant, IMO. As long as the tax is applied equally according to use, it's fair.
They could just send it all to me and you. We could divide it up and make sure everyone else got their share....at no cost to the taxpayers. Agreed?
