MSU Muslims seek discipline of professor for critical e-mail
Lansing State Journal ^ | 4/25/06 | Matthew Miller

Note referred to group as 'brutal'

The Muslim Students' Association at Michigan State University is calling for a public reprimand of a mechanical engineering professor who sent the group an e-mail calling them "dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal, and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems."

The e-mail, sent by professor Indrek Sven Wichman on Feb. 28 from his university account, was a sharply worded criticism of Muslim protests against the Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad and of Muslim cultures in general.

In it, according to a copy provided by the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Wichman told the group he hoped that they would "return to your ancestral homelands ... instead of troubling Americans."

Reached at his office Monday, Wichman declined to comment on the letter.

MSA President Farhan Abdul Azeez said Wichman's e-mail was unacceptable, particularly from a faculty member, "especially considering Michigan State's commitment to trying to be inclusive and welcoming and diverse."

MSU Vice President for University Relations Terry Denbow said that Wichman has been cautioned against "any future communication along these lines," but he was not formally disciplined.

Denbow said the views expressed in the e-mail are "highly inappropriate, antithetical to the institution's values and positions and policies and, to me personally, worthy of an apology."

But he said a university investigation found that Wichman's attitudes had not created a "threat to the integrity of the learning environment."

In a statement released late Monday, Satish Upda, acting dean of MSU's College of Engineering, emphasized that Wichman "does not speak for anyone but himself."

He added, however, that while he and others might find Wichman's ideas offensive, the college is committed "to maintaining a free and open marketplace of ideas. Part of that is allowing its community members to challenge each other's ideas and values."

Abdul Azeez said the MSA brought the e-mail to the attention of MSU administrators the day after it was sent and, along with representatives from CAIR, has since met with several of MSU's top administrators on the issue.

Both Abdul Azeez and Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR's Michigan Chapter, said they were making the e-mail public because the university had not provided a satisfactory response.

"They should send out an official statement to the public distancing themselves from these types of statements," Walid said, "and confirm for us that they did, in fact, do a formal investigation and that there is going to be some kind of disciplinary action against Dr. Wichman."

In a news release issued Monday, the MSA also called for MSU to establish a mandatory freshman seminar addressing "hate and discrimination," to set up diversity training programs for faculty and to provide support for Islamic culture and diversity programs, as well as programs addressing issues faced by Muslim students.

Denbow said university officials were "continuing to discuss those issues with them."

Abject dhimmis around the world can't crawl low enough to satisfy the Muslims, and the first amendment is suspended in all cases of criticism of the Religion of Peace.

Dr. Wichman ought to do a simple news search and present these Muslims with the stack of articles to back up every one of his correct adjectives describing current Muslim behavior around the world.

I am afraid this poor man is going to be in for a very rough time.

What has happened to the right of people to speak freely about what they believe? The Muslims can send groups to chant horrible things at the Israeli Embassy saying the real Holocaust is on the way, etc.
Then on their Internet site they have pictures of an Islamic flag flying over the White House and posted a picture on their web site showing our Capitol building burning BUT, this can't be touched because it is "Free Speech."
Enough of this, they cannot have our country.

" But he said a university investigation found that Wichman's attitudes had not created a "threat to the integrity of the learning environment.""

Well the fact that he wasn't fired on the spot and this statement was issued, gives me some hope.

The war on terror will eventually have to be won in the streets here at home. How we fight it, by stopping it now before they grow anymore, or by allowing this tumor( islam ) to grow until it has to be drastically cut out excised, is the question.

This "poor man" is an idiot who went off on a rant instead of presenting a coherent reponse to something that was (legitimately) bothering him.

Academic freedom slices both ways. If Colorado University students have to suffer through a leftie prof who not only spews ludicrous speech and writings but also got his position through fraud and false credentials, then a legitimate prof can certainly pontificate. In fact he is expected to do that to earn his pay.
