So lemme see if I have this straight so far: We have Mary Mcarthy who was appointed by Clinton We have Sandy Berger who was appointed by Clinton We have the real Joe Wilson, who was appointed to some African nation and then Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council by Clinton We have Valerie Plame Joe Wilson's wife, who joined the CIA while Clinton was president and we have Dana Priestly who got her information from the aforesaid Mary Mcarthy, and we have William Goodfellow, husband of Dana Priestly who gets Joe Wilson speaking engagements. Tom Clancy eat your heart out. |
Selective Leaking
Tom Joscelyn brilliantly lays out a prior instance in which CIA agent Mary McCarthy, the leaker just fired from the CIA, entered the public record: her involvement in the bombing of al-Shifa, one of the targets in Sudan that the Clinton adminstration attacked in 1998.
http://www.instapundit.com/
TOM MAGUIRE: "The NY Times seems to think the political contributions of the sacked CIA officer are significant, but their investigative skills are apparently a bit rusty, since they are about $7,500 light in their reporting."
UPDATE: Lots of bloggers are jumping on this story: More here, here, and a big roundup here.
I'm pretty sure I know what the talk-radio folks will be talking about next week.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Still more here.

CIA leaker fired
Washington Post journalist Dana Priest won a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting on the CIA secret prisons story; in this interview the prisons are described as gulags and Priest seems to have no problem with it: Dana Priest on secret gulags, CIA and war. (Hat tip: Doss.)
Now that an EU investigation has found no evidence of illegal CIA action, will her Pulitzer be revokedsince the story for which it was awarded was false?
Dont hold your breath.
But this time the McCarthy is waving a list of known... patriots.

CIA FIRES OFFICER MARY McCARTHY OVER ALLEGED LEAK
This is an egregious crime. It was operational, not just classified info. She put lives in danger, c**t. She disclosed top secret information. Jail time is too kind. Think about it.
Piece of advise for the Bushies...............FIRE ANY ONE THAT WORKED UNDER THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION, I mean really.
Strata-sphere has the straight dope here, an incredible post actually.
The latest fired CIA employee is Mary McCarthy, (one of many to come, I understand, apparently the Department of Justice said they have DOZENS of leak investigations ongoing);
Until July 2001, she served as special assistant to the president and senior director for intelligence programs on the National Security Council (NSC) Staff, under both Presidents Clinton and Bush. More here hat tip x-dhimmi

Excellent complete overview over at Flopping Aces here, and important read;
... Dana Priest, who also won the George Polk Award and a prize from the Overseas Press Club this week for her articles, declined to comment Friday. She apparently came to the defense of Richard Clarke once. If she is one in the same, this person has betrayed a lot of people with her actions. More here...and Flopping Aces points out, lest we not forget what Porter Goss said;
Porter Goss told the Senate that these leaks had damaged our intelligence gathering capability and in so doing our national security:

Wilsongate: Motive, Means, and Opportunity
From my files: Wilson (as Ambassador to Gabon) had/has connections to the Gabon Chief of State, Omar Bongo, who was the chief African ally of the French oil company TotalFinaElf, a major beneficiary of the Oil-for-Food bribes. Prior to the Iraq War, they had a contract with Saddam's regime worth an estimated 12.5 to 27.0 billion barrels of oil reserves. Also he had connections via the Middle East Institute and Rock Creek, both of which are Saudi controlled.
Wilson's wife Jacqueline was also apparently a lobbyist for Bongo and it seems Wilson was pretty chummy with Saddam's weapons buyer, having dinner with him on the eve that Kuwait was invaded in 1990. She is now an advisor to Bongo, her picture from a 2005 conference can be found here That makes it very clear that there are connections to oil-for-food. No wonder Wilson can afford his lifestyle.

Who is Mary McCarthy? [The Great One, Mark Levin, weighs in...]--Well, as of this morning (Saturday) most of the drive-by media don't care. They're fixated with the weather and gas prices and anything else that will divert the public's attention from the stunning revelation that a Sandy Berger crony has apparently been leaking top-secret information from her high post at the CIA.
The blogs are all over it. See
Ace of Spades HQ and follow the links. The bloggers are reporting that the WaPo is carrying a story in Sunday's edition indicating that the investigation by the FBI is widespread, and that Rockefeller and Durbin and their staffs will be asked to take polygraphs, and that reporters who published the leaks may be subject to prosecution.

Mary McCarthy Identified As CIA Leaker
The identity of the CIA leaker fired for passing classified information to Washington Post writer Dana Priest has been revealed.
The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned. Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA's inspector general's office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.
The leak pertained to stories on the CIAs rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.
Sources said the CIA believes McCarthy had more than a dozen unauthorized contacts with Priest. Information about subjects other than the prisons may have been leaked as well.
The sleuthing has begun ;
The report of the 9/11 Commission notes that the National Security staff reviewed the intelligence in April 2000 and concluded that the CIA's assessment of its intelligence on bin Laden and al-Shifa had been valid; the memo to Clinton on this was cosigned by Richard Clarke and Mary McCarthy, the NSC senior director for intelligence programs, who opposed the bombing of al-Shifa in 1998

Murray Waas, of all people. What a hypocritical Clymer. As you most likely already know, he himself was the recipient of a
20,000-page CIA "document dump"in 1998 -- a leak from someone inside the CIA who thought Clinton's foreign intelligence policy was dangerous to the country and should be exposed.
Murray, while you're ranting and raving about how McCarthy's "legitimate and even inadvertent contacts with journalists" (yes, he actually said that), why don't we revisit your own CIA leaker?
"Waas" up?! Where are those 20,000 CIA documents?

The Black Hole of Cyberspace | TUE NOV 24 1998 | Matt Drudge DRUDGE REPORTTUE NOV 24 1998 23:52:09 UTC WHITE HOUSE PANIC; MASSIVE LEAK OF NATIONAL SECURITY DOCUMENTS **World Exclusive* WASHINGTON -- The Clinton administration is facing the most massive leak of classified foreign policy documents since the publication of the Pentagon papers more than two decades ago during the Vietnam war, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned. "The impeachment proceedings are going to have seemed like a picnic, before we get though with this," said one White House official. The papers, totaling more than 20,000 pages, according to sources who have read them, include a history of the secret negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea, describing the failed policy of trying to buy off North Korea to forego its nuclear weapons policy. They describe in great detail the intelligence and policy failures that led to the detonations of nuclear weapons by India and Pakistan this year.
Most embarrassing, the papers appear to corroborate, according to sources who have read them, allegations by a former U.N. arms inspector that the Clinton administration concealed from Congress and the public details regarding Saddam Hussein's ambitious program to develop nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
The papers also reveal new details on the Clinton policy towards China in which the White House allowed ballistic missile technology exports to China at the behest of wealthy Democratic campaign contributors.
News of the massive leak of classified foreign policy documents caught senior White House officials by surprise on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend... MORE
Two Washington newspaper editors have reviewed the papers, which have been obtained by left-wing reporter Murray Waas.
Waas has been holding the documents close, according to one media insider. Some in Washington speculate that Waas does not want to write a major expose about the Clinton administration in the midst of the impeachment hearings, fueling the flames for conservatives.
The new leaks appear to be indicative of deep dissatisfaction within the foreign policy establishment regarding Clinton policies.
There have been other unprecedented leaks as well: most notably, a James Risen story in the NEW YORK TIMES earlier this week about the disregarding of a CIA assessment of Russian corruption by Vice President Al Gore. Some see an organized attempt by dissidents to discredit the Clinton foreign policy.
Ironically, the Clinton White House might have a hard time attacking one of their favorite reporters: During the 1992 presidential campaign, both Clinton and Gore often praised Waas exclusives exposing the Bush administration's Iraq policy, which involved the leaks of thousands of pages of classified papers regarding the Gulf war. " |

Murray, you were all over the Valerie Plame leak. Now you're all over the Mary McCarthy leak case. How quaint.
Where were your public calls for 'justice-for-leakers' back in 1998 when someone in the CIA gave you an early Christmas present? After all, your own CIA leaker was obviously someone who was against your boy Clinton (and obviously didn't realize you were a Clinton sycophant). Why didn't you persue that case? And where is your own CIA leaker now? What ever happened to him or her?
Didn't you think your leaker should have been held accountable? Since you defended Clinton throughout his eight long years of criminal activity, it seems like you would have loved to see your CIA leaker go down for leaking incriminating evidence. No? At the very least, shouldn't your CIA leaker have lost his or her big, fat CIA pension? Where were your calls for legal prosecution?
More importantly, Murray, where are those 20,000 CIA documents now?

Four years of the condor
A.J. Strata notes the sudden ubiquity of former CIA agents seeking to take out the Bush administration: "More rogue CIA agents in the media." A.J. writes:
If I was the paranoid kind, I would think ex-CIA agents and NSC members are trying to instigate a bloodless coup detat. I am not there yet. But with McCarthys firing as the first publicized peron caught (or should we say confessing) to discussing classified matters with reporters without authorization (is that accurately worded so McCarthy lawyer Cobb cant pull a clinton-esque spin job?) it is interesting to see who is coming out and about in the media...
John and I have been writing on matters related to A.J.'s post for a while. I devoted a Standard column to the subject in
"Three years of the Condor." John took it up in his Standard column
"Leaking at all costs."UPDATE: A.J. backpedals a bit in a major update/addendum that now leads the post.

The Wilson, Rockefeller, & McCarthy Ties--Very interesting stuff going on in the Mary McCarthy files. It appears many of us missed a few important connections: One aspect of her background so far comparatively unexamined is her West African uranium connection. She served in a key government position concerned with West African nations producing yellowcake uranium at the same time that Joseph Wilson was working in the area. During his time in Gabon, Wilson must have been deeply knowledgeable about uranium production and trade there, and must have been familiar with officials of the French energy giant COGEMA, now consolidated into the French Areva Group, a firm closely involved with the French government which appoints members of its board. Joe Wilson has his own French connection. Speaking of dealing in commodities, this whole affair brings us back to square one and Mary McCarthy. One of her previous employerswas Beri, SA. Possibly by coincidence Beri provides a Mineral Extraction Risk Assessment service...Could the Wilson-McCarthy-Africa connection may indicate another instance of US intelligence and Foreign Service personnel taking advantage of regulatory loopholes and lax security in third world countries for personal gain? Macranger, the former intelligence official, believes he knows what is coming next: In the coming days you will see why Senator Rockefeller HAD to make such an emergency visit to Syria in 2002. For a little tip, read here.

--The story now has everyone's attention due to the Mary O. McCarthy story. It blasted out the headline: CIA Holds Terror Suspects in Secret Prisons!-- DAN RIEHL says that Dana Priest was channeling 2002 in 2005. As I said in an earlier post on the issue: let's go back to the start. Also keep in mind that many countries and the EU have investigated this and claim there were no such international facilities. Whether that is true or not is debatable. But the WaPo entirely ignored, not only their own 2002 story but any subsequent criticism and denial, as well. The Thai PM also called for a retraction in late 2005, which went largely unnoticed by the MSM in the US. And just as a matter of curiosity, why is it that the above article is no longer available at the Washington Post on line? Archiving, most likely. At least I hope so.
