New York State is losing more residents than any other state in the country, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics released early today.
Based on surveys taken between 2000 and 2004, the figures show that New York replaced California as the net migration outflow leader, with an average of 182,886 people leaving a year, nearly double California's average for the same period.
California led the nation between 1990 and 2000.
The findings track the state-to-state movement in America.
They do not include international immigration numbers.
The New York City metropolitan region - which includes Long Island and parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania - also leads the country in migration outflow, with an average of 211,014 leaving a year.
The number is higher than the state figure because many of those leaving the metropolitan region resettle in other areas of New York.
Despite the tremendous outflow, the overall city population, at 8.2 million, is growing due to increases in international immigration and a birthrate that is greater than the death rate.
"There are three reasons people are leaving: taxes, taxes, and taxes," a Republican candidate for governor, John Faso, said.
His recommended solution: "Cut taxes, reduce spending, put the state budget on a diet."
Another Republican candidate, William Weld, also stressed the need to cut taxes.
"For New York to retain its young people and talented work force, it must corral and bridle New York's government spending, cut taxes, and reduce imposed business costs such as health care and worker's compensation,"...
These are simple changes that will provide the key to keeping our seed corn: good jobs at good wages."

Long Island used to have the best pizza. Not anymore. I've heard of the Chicago pizza but all not good reviews. NYC is very good but too expensive. Tony's Pizza on Fulton Ave in Hempstead is the best and run by the same guy for decades.
asp1 is right about urban sprawl on Long Island, esp. in Nassau County! It is insane and is totally fueled by the housing bubble.
cool pics!
Good God Noooooooo! We have bumper stickers down here like......."We Don't Care How You Do It In NY", "(heart) NY-Delta Is Ready When You Are"
I do like going to Jone Beach though.
I live in Yonkers and the cost of even the smallest dumps are incredible.
You can't touch anything for less than 600k that is even in any way close to being nice.
Personally, I love the movie Donnie Brasco and all my friends hope to do that one day, go down to Tampa, start a business and go boating.
I usually go to Long Beach. It's closer than Jones which I always thought of as crowded. My mom was thinking of moving up around Yonkers but I reminded her it's as cold there as it is here :-)
And that's a good thing!
There are parts of Yonkers that are just as nice as Scarsdale, and like 15 minutes to downtown NYC.
The taxes are a bit less than other parts of Westchester, but the schools are horrendous, and the "other side" is nowhere to be at night.
The only reason I go to LI is for Jones Beach and to take my GF to the Islanders games.
Correct (although Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany are fairly liberal as well). They are overwhelmed by the NYC ultra-liberals.
Taxes, taxes, taxes and Hillary!!
Good post devolve!
We're very lucky in San Antonio, We have Florios, run by a very nice competent family from New Jersey. When it comes to pizza the Hudson river does not really matter. New York and New Jersey pizza are interchangeable.
Florio's has the taste, texture, and ambience of a good sidewalk pizza place.
Been to Gino's in New Hyde Park and they're great!
100% of people polled (Cyborg and Hubby), agree: Gino's is great! :0)
LOL!!
They do not include international immigration numbers.
Can you imagine that?!
