Afghanistan Calls for Crackdown at Border
(Full Story)

Pakistan needs to do more to crack down on terrorism along the Pakistani-Afghan border, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday.

Rahim Karimi said in the news conference that Afghanistan need greater "cooperation" from both its eastern neighbor and the international community in its battle against Islamic militants.

Coalition and Afghan forces have in recent days been fighting fierce battles against Taliban fighters near the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Blast Destroys Iraqi Police Station; Tip Leads Soldiers to Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 19, 2006 – Terrorists blew up a new Iraqi police station under construction south of Baghdad yesterday, military officials reported.
The explosion caused half of the building to collapse.

Iraqi soldiers from 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, secured the site after the blast to prevent further damage.

"Terrorists are attempting to prevent the rebuilding of the essential infrastructure," said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan Withington, a Multinational Division Baghdad spokesman. "The police station is a sign of progress for the Iraqi people."

Iraqi authorities are investigating the blast.

In other news, a citizen's tip led Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers to a weapons cache south of Baghdad on April 17. Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, received the tip while on patrol.

The cache included eight 250- to 500-pound aerial bombs stored in a steel cage and ready to be transported. The soldiers contacted an explosive ordnance disposal team, which conducted a controlled detonation and destroyed the cache.

Earlier in the day, soldiers from MNDB's 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, discovered a cache while patrolling southwest of Baghdad. The cache consisted of two rocket-propelled-grenade launchers, 15 rocket-propelled grenades, a mortar tube, a 60 mm round, two green-star-cluster flares, and an Iraqi police vest.

The cache was turned over to an EOD team and rendered safe.

Real bad news in Afghanistan
Taliban regains control of much of country, Pakistan

In a report by Paul L. Williams, author of the new book, "Dunces of Doomsday," and David Dastych, one-eyed Mullah Omar and his army of radical Islamic students are currently in control of all of the rural and mountain areas of Afghanistan, including Khost, Paktia, Paktika, Ghazni, Zabul, Helmand, and Oruzgan, as well as a vast expanse of eastern and southern provinces including sections of Kandahar. They also have become the central governing body in South and North Qaziristan and other tribal territories of Pakistan.

Muslim students 'being taught to despise unbelievers as filth'
Times OnLine ^ | 4/20/06 | Sean O'Neill

Posted on 04/19/2006 4:57:05 PM PDT by grandpa jones

MUSLIM students training to be imams at a British college with strong Iranian links have complained that they are being taught fundamentalist doctrines which describe nonMuslims as “filth”. The Times has obtained extracts from medieval texts taught to the students in which unbelievers are likened to pigs and dogs. The texts are taught at the Hawza Ilmiyya of London, a religious school, which has a sister institution, the Islamic College for Advanced Studies (ICAS), which offers a degree validated by Middlesex University.

The students, who have asked to remain anonymous, study their religious courses alongside the university-backed BA in Islamic studies. They spend two days a week as religious students and three days on their university course.

The Hawza Ilmiyya and the ICAS are in the same building at Willesden High Road, North London — a former Church of England primary school — and share many of the same teaching staff. ... The text is one of a number of books that some students say they find “disturbing” and “very worrying”. Their spokesman told The Times: “They are being exposed to very literalist interpretations of the Koran. These are interpretations that would not be recognised by 80 or 90 per cent of Muslims, but they are being taught in this school.

Anger as 'honour killing' family try to adopt victim's son
Telegraph ^ | 19/04/2006 | Hannah Cleaver

Posted on 04/19/2006 5:02:06 PM PDT by ncountylee

The family of an ethnic Turkish German woman executed by her brother in an "honour killing" has sparked outrage by applying for custody of her young son.

A German family court will decide the future of the six-year-old son of Hatun Surucu, but politicians of all parties have called for the boy, currently with a foster family, not to be handed over to his dead mother's sister.

Miss Surucu, 23, was murdered in Berlin last February by her younger brother who shot her three times in the head in what the trial judge said was "an ice-cold execution-style murder - just because she lived her life."

Miss Surucu had been forced to marry a cousin in Turkey when she was 15. Later, she returned pregnant to Berlin, where she had been born, along with her nine brothers and sisters.

There she stopped wearing a headscarf, started training as an electrician and lived alone with her son, Can. She had relationships with men, including Germans, and wore make-up as well as going dancing, a lifestyle her Muslim family could not accept.

Her 20-year-old brother Ayhan Surucu admitted committing the murder when aged 18, and was sentenced to nine years and three months last week.
