FRIDAY, April 14 (HealthDay News) -- Fetuses cannot feel pain, therefore U.S. legislation requiring doctors to tell women that the fetus will feel pain, or to provide pain relief during abortions, has no scientific basis and may harm the women involved, a leading expert contends.
"This is an unwarranted piece of legislation because there is good evidence that the fetus cannot feel pain at any stage of gestation," said Stuart Derbyshire, senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Birmingham, U.K.
He authored an review of the available data on the subject in the April 15 issue of the British Medical Journal.

This is a bunch of BS!
Just think, If this yahoo got aborted, he wouldn't be an author, nor would we now have his stinking news. What a blathering fool.
They never seem to think of it in terms of their own lives.
The old saying is, "the people that support abortion have already been born." Pain isn't the issue, having the right to life is!!!
I wonder what they would be thinking if the situation was reversed, and they were the fetus? But of course, babies can't defend themselves...right!
It is a well understood precept in logic that one cannot prove a negative, yet here we have an expert that wants the world to take his word at face value that he alone is living proof of a dramatic contradiction of such befuddlement.
That much I know - our universal human treatment of people labeled as 'destitute' is deplorable - and some of the justification used to do so throughout history equally so.
I understand the not being able to give out info in the middle of a research project (I do research myself).
BTW, Happy Easter (after 12am where I am now).
Happy Easter to you too!
"Obviously this expert was never pregnant and never experienced the sudden activity of a baby when the mother-to-be finally got to rest. I always said my second child was twins, and they were having a nighttime rock fight. Must have been my imagination! "
I'm wondering where this so called "Dark Ages" story is coming from - preemies do cry when they get stuck.
Doctors who do prenatal surgeries give the babies anesthesia.
Yes - you are wrong, I'm wrong, a majority of the medical community is wrong...and this guy is right. Sure......
LSHMBB
Waiting for the study to detail the lifelong pangs felt by those who have had abortions.
