Mr. President, I thank Senator Leahy, ranking member on the Judiciary Committee. I have received just this afternoon in my office some disturbing news in the form of correspondence from the Congressional Budget Office. It suggests a number of areas where the amendment we are talking about here today, No. 3424, the immigration so-called compromise, violates our budget and the rules of the Senate. Let me read from the correspondence we have received. This is something, as you know, Mr. President, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, that we never discussed at all. It is not a matter we spent any time at all discussing as we moved forward with legislation which ultimately cleared that committee and came to the floor legislation which I thought was not good legislation and which I opposed, and so did the Senator from Texas, who just relinquished the Chair. We didn't discuss the financial impact of the legislation before us. Stand Up For America ! |

Oh Phooey. Well, it was a sunny day. The Minutemen were ready to start on time but the Che Guevara crowd was standing across from the Rally, yelling and chanting, beating their drums, etcetera.
The microphones and podium were set up in a grassy area and each speaker took their turn and were well received by the crowd. There were several flags among the attendees, patriotic clothing, a few signs and I saw some guys in U.S. Border Patrol t-shirts. We also spotted FReeper Kristinn in one of the crowd shots.
Barbara Coe and Jim Gilchrist were both particularly outstanding speakers. Barbara really rocks; a strong sistah. Jim Gilchrist also answered questions after the speeches. And a nice looking young man... don't know his name, but from L.A. he said ... closed the Rally by leading everyone in singing the National Anthem... in ENGLISH!
God bless America!
You can also get a flavor of the goings-on by reading the Day 10 thread... it's not too long.

I spoke to a live person at White House comment line, after a long wait. Then, I reached Frist's office ... they were closed, I left voice mail.
Realized I am racking up the minutes, so will try to do voice mails on the weekend.
I do not have a fax machine either, think I should invest in one. When I go to a faxing place, it's expensive plus they're nosy about what I'm faxing.
Post cards are a great idea! Should get through the anthrax scan faster. I'll use red and blue Sharpies to write mine. Fantastic! Thanks!
(*applause* *applause*) The HOUSE Permits Pentagon to Assign U.S. Military Along Mexican Border
On Capitol Hill on Thursday, the House voted 252-171 to allow Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to assign military personnel under certain circumstances to help the Homeland Security Department perform border security. The House added the provision to a larger military measure.
I LOVED it when he said that!
This is actually one of the demands on the Minuteman petition.
*grin*
Dear Senator Reid,
Illegals who have snuck into the USofA have no right to DEMAND a flipping thing from you. Their threat to re-ignited civil rights movement is insulting. That right (among others) are reserved for immigrants who went through the legal process or present citizens of this country. I remind you of this in considering "who" exactly you represent. Sir, you took an oath to the citizens of THIS COUNTRY.
No amnesty, in any form or fashion is acceptable. Calling illegal aliens good hearted people with strong family values just doing the jobs us lazy Americans won't do is an insult to the citizenry of this country. These illegals are law-breakers who disrespect taxpayers and the entire infrastructure of our country.
If you support the demands of these people you will not be forgiven. It is being suggested that the pension fund of congressional members responsible for the present "illegal invasion" fiasco to be used to pay (reparation) for the security and damages caused by this "illegal" debacle.
Remember my name, Senator. Tell it to your colleagues. I will be front and center of holding you all accountable as "representatives" of the citizenry of THIS COUNTRY.
Sincerely disgusted taxpaying citizen voter,
ME**
Oh, this is an excellent letter, but on a postcard? ;)
These people are giving me such an "excedrin" headache.
No, silly. That link you provided from the "dark side". That stuff they were sending to him demanding civil rights for illegals. I snuck it in via that.
LOLLOL good one!
NBC: Bush may deploy Guard along U.S. border
President to address nation on immigration Monday as Senate nears deal
WASHINGTON - As the White House prepared for President Bush to address the nation on immigration, sources told NBC News on Friday that the Pentagon could deploy as many as 5,000 National Guard troops to the countrys southwest borders to stem the flow of illegal immigrants.
The White House said it was seeking time from television networks for the presidents remarks on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. Bush, trying to build momentum for legislation that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens, is to speak from the Oval Office.
This is crunch time, Tony Snow, the new White House press secretary, told reporters.

Arizona Republicans to up funding for state illegal-immigration efforts
Republican leaders in the Arizona Legislature proposed a $160 million plan on Thursday to crack down on illegal immigration, upping the amount previously promised for confronting the state's border woes.
The figure was raised from $100 million to $160 million because the leaders have grown more frustrated with Arizona's porous border, said Republican Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, the driving force behind the wide-ranging proposal.
"We are serious," Pearce said. "It's the No. 1 issue."

Protesters demonstrate against a Minuteman Project during a rally on Capitol Hill Friday, May 12, 2006
WASHINGTON May 12, 2006 (AP) Reflecting the American divide over immigration, protesters on both sides stood a few feet from each other near the Capitol shouting chants and exchanging accusations of racism.
The protesters were kept apart Friday by helmeted police officers who stood inside a ring of yellow police tape.
A Minuteman Project rally marked the end of a cross-country caravan by the anti-immigration group, whose members patrol the U.S.-Mexican border in search of illegal border crossers. The caravan began in Los Angeles.
