Stunning facts about the proposed immigration bill

SENATOR SESSIONS ON SECURING AMERICA'S BORDERS ACT

Mr. President, I thank Senator Leahy, ranking member on the Judiciary Committee.

I have received just this afternoon in my office some disturbing news in the form of correspondence from the Congressional Budget Office. It suggests a number of areas where the amendment we are talking about here today, No. 3424, the immigration so-called compromise, violates our budget and the rules of the Senate.

Let me read from the correspondence we have received. This is something, as you know, Mr. President, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, that we never discussed at all. It is not a matter we spent any time at all discussing as we moved forward with legislation which ultimately cleared that committee and came to the floor — legislation which I thought was not good legislation and which I opposed, and so did the Senator from Texas, who just relinquished the Chair. We didn't discuss the financial impact of the legislation before us.

Stand Up For America !

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

"I would like to think there is still some respect left on FR, but your tactics make me wonder.

"Considering this is our little corner of the world what did you expect?"

JP..LaEnchiladita...I see we have acquired some new posters here on this informative immigration thread. What a wonderful way to help them see the big picture! JP has worked hard along with many other Freepers to make this the Go-To thread to post and read the latest immigration articles, political leanings, news, etc.

Just want to make sure that this thread will continue to be a positive, kind, intelligent sharing of information. I would not want to see the nastiness that happened on the thread the other night. I will be watching closely to make sure that those who just show up to cause disruption, change the subject, or are just plain uncivil via mean and personal attacks mind their manners!!

Joining your FReeper family in prayer ...

Heavenly Father, we return to thank You for the many petitions before the Throne of Grace for little Riley and her family. May it be, Merciful Father, that You will shower Riley's medical team with utmost skill and wisdom, revealing to them the nature of her fever, and directing her Doctors to the correct medicines and procedures, that Riley will soon be restored to the fullness of health. Strengthen her beloved family as they minister to her during this illness ... grant them calm reassurance that You are with them always, even unto the end of the age. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen ...

After the rally, immigrant groups plan next step (Chicago)
Pilsen group will head to Washington next

The immigration movement is at the forefront of the country’s mind and passions are high after Monday’s marches, organizers and legislators said Wednesday. Now they hope to capitalize on the momentum with a rally in Washington, D.C., on Friday, May 19.

Emma Lozano, president of Pueblo Sin Fronteras in Pilsen, said the Washington rally will call for an immediate moratorium on raids and deportations and for Congressional approval of a comprehensive immigration bill.

Pueblo Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders, an organization that promotes the rights of immigrants and their families, plans to bus participants from Chicago to Washington, D.C., May 18.

The rally will be on the Ellipse, Lozano said, "which seems fitting to put it back on the president since the House and Senate cannot agree" on an immigration bill.

Lozano and organizers said they are in the planning and development stage and are unsure of specifics, such as the length of the rally, the number of buses, speakers, and participant size.

Alderman Danny Solis (25th Ward) said he was unsure if he would attend the Washington rally, but said he believed Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Mayor Daley would either attend or be represented.(snip)

Immigrants... sheesh... it isn't about immigrants. It's about illegal. And the pandering to Pueblo Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders over citizens of the US who voice concern over this issue. Thanks for the post, V!!

Immigration crackdown intensifies

William Hermann and Judi Villa
The Arizona Republic
May. 11, 2006 12:00 AM

Valley law enforcement agencies are ramping up efforts to combat illegal immigration, but they are using the state's anti-human-smuggling statute to tackle the problem from two different directions.

On the one hand, a multi-agency financial crimes task force has been using surveillance and undercover operations for the past two months to target smugglers and cripple them financially.

On the other hand, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has mobilized a posse to seek out and arrest undocumented immigrants for conspiracy to smuggle themselves into the United States.

The efforts come on the heels of an anti-human-smuggling statute that took effect in Arizona in August and gave prosecutors a tool to go after "coyotes," or smugglers, who traffic in undocumented immigrants. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office later issued an opinion saying undocumented immigrants suspected of paying coyotes could be prosecuted as conspirators.

Both approaches initially appear to be having an impact.

On Wednesday, task force officials from Phoenix police, the state Department of Public Safety and the Arizona Attorney General's Office announced their investigation into human-smuggling operations and money laundering has netted 62 arrests, along with weapons, cars and cash.

The ongoing investigation has been an attack of smuggling operations "from the top down," DPS Director Roger Vanderpool said.

"We are going after the leaders. We believe that our police shouldn't become immigration officers," Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said. "Do we want to raid restaurants and arrest dishwashers? We need to arrest the people at the top."

In the past two months, the task force has seized 11 weapons, 62 vehicles, six real estate properties valued at $1.7 million, 5 kilograms of cocaine and 3 pounds of marijuana. In addition, $4.8 million in cash was seized and 528 undocumented immigrants were turned over to immigration authorities, Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris said.

"These people are in this for the cash," state Attorney General Terry Goddard said. "If we're going to cut off this poison, we're going to do it by making it unprofitable to conduct human smuggling."

On Wednesday night, Arpaio's posse fanned out across the desert, looking for illegal immigrants being smuggled on state highways and local roadways. In the past six weeks, Arpaio's operation has jailed 146 undocumented immigrants, including 12 smugglers.

Arpaio said Wednesday that he hoped his agency's efforts would be a deterrent, with illegal immigrants and smugglers realizing they're going to jail.

"They have to get the message and stop coming over here," Arpaio said. "Do it legally."
