SAN FRANCISCO - Mayor Gavin Newsom said Thursday that The City will not comply with any federal legislation that criminalizes efforts to help illegal immigrants.

The mayor also denounced a bipartisan congressional proposal that would beef up border security and allow as many as 12 million illegal immigrants to gain legal status.

Newsom, who has not been afraid to wade into controversial national issues such as gay marriage, appeared with a group of elected officials on the steps of City Hall to support immigrants, “documented as well as undocumented.”Newsom also signed a resolution sponsored by Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, and passed unanimously by the Board of Supervisors, urging San Francisco law enforcement not to comply with criminal provisions of any new immigration bill.

“San Francisco stands foursquare in strong opposition to the rhetoric coming out of Washington, D.C.,” Newsom said. “If people think we were defiant on the gay marriage issue, they haven’t seen defiance.”

Make sure the new laws make state and local officials who refuse to cooperate guilty of aiding-and-abeting.

Better than that one, the U.S. Government can deny any Federal dollars to a State that refuses to follow the law.

Look at what is happening to colleges that refuse to allow the military to recruit on their campuses - no more Federal Education/tax dollars.

The old "green back" certainly gets the attention like none other.

If I didn't have to drive accross the GG Bridge, I would be that much happier. That's $5 NOT well spent.

I believe the legislation cuts off all federal funds for any government that doesn't comply.

If you don't follow Federal law. Federal money should not go there for other programs. And if I break a law I am likely to go to jail. What are the chances that Mayor Newsome will go to jail? I thought not! ha.

Good Mayor! Let them all come to your sorry socialist (I mean progressive) city!

But then you'd ask for billions in bonds and grants to compensate for the socialist (I mean progressive) programs.

"Never mind..."

I had to visit San Fran for work a number of times in 2005. I'd have to say it is far and away the worst city I have ever been forced to visit in the entire world... including places where they were shooting at me.

I am sure there are good people there, but I am equally sure that I never met them.

There are some really sick puppies in charge of the City by the Bay.

And come election time they will probably be reelected.

So by association the City by the Bay is comprised of a majority of sick puppies.

If he ignores the law, he should be arrested. He certainly would have anyone arrested that breaks one of his homosexual loving laws.

This is no brave comment from the Mayor. The House bill as passsed there has NO chance of passing. Newsome knows it. The statement is pure theater.
