Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

I have no problem with a national ID card. I used a passport for years as an ID. I have no problem with putting obstacles for illegals interacting the system. I have no problem with addressing wire transfers. I simply believe that simply saying deport them all is a simplistic and absurd proposal.

Sooooo...can we deport ANY of them?

"The House is going to stick this in the Senate's ear."

Ahem:

Hastert Hints at Compromise on Immigration Bill

Published: March 30, 2006
WASHINGTON, March 29 — Speaker J. Dennis Hastert said Wednesday that he and other House Republicans recognized the need for a guest-worker program, opening the door to a possible compromise with the Senate on fiercely debated immigration legislation.

Is that so? Maybe not in GA, but there are folks in NY that would argue with that. Just yesterday there was the story of 40 illeal Chinese found in a container on the West coast.

No it doesn't - We are talking about the United States. In the US, Mexican illegals are estimated at 11 million and growing. You think that Chinese coming over 40 at a time compare to that?

Maybe ken's OK because he's in New York, so what does he care if Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and southern California become part of Mexico again.

After all, they will never work their way all they way up to where HE lives.

Meanwhile, we have entire neighborhoods in Virginia that don't speak english. It isn't as far away from New York as you might think.

And if we have to pay more for workers, at least we'll be employing people who are legally here, who will pay taxes, and spend the money here instead of sending back to their "own" countries.

I am not so sure the business community will welcome this, I think they who use illegal labor want the status quo to remain the status quo. If these illegals gain legally employable status the price to employer them goes up. The border must be made less porous or nothing is going to change and the human flood will continue.

It has been quite useful in IDing the quislings too.

I'm glad you're having fun. I don't see the dissolution of our once great Republican Party and the self immolation of our nation to be enjoyable. To each their own, I guess.

Do you know the average IQ of many of these illegals is below 85 ? This is a genetic fact.

How will this impact our civilization and culture ?

Round em up, deport them. Give heavy fines to the people who employ the illegals. A mass exodus would ensue.

Well, seems the wall I am talking to is not responding.

Kris Kobach told us last night the DHS cannot handle the immigration load they have now, and so there is no way they can examine each amnesty petition.

With sincere respect, Gary...

1. I don't know who Kris Kobach is.

2. I didn't need him to tell me that any proposed law requiring illegals to go back to their home countries before applying to come back in is bull crap. They didn't bother to respect our laws coming in. Why does anyone think they'll respect a law requiring them to leave? And what provisions will our esteemed senators put in the bill to force them to leave? Answer: None.

Oh lord, that idiot on Rush drove me up a wall.

There isn't a word that describes the contempt I feel for these cretins.

They work to undermine the very country that they live in.

I'm telling you, five, ten years from now we'll all be living in Greater Mexico.

An exorbitantly wealthy, high caste elite, serviced by millions of people in peonage.

And you will set up your own central committe telling how people can run restaurants. A hint, it was tried before in the place called the Soviet Union, and that place imploded.

Your strawmen are stupid beyond words.
