Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

If I'm the one who's upset, how come you're the one jumping on the caps-lock key?

I was QUOTING you.

What's your objective, since you seem to be willing to sacrifice that?

I want nore U.S. citizens, preferably those who will vote GOP.

I'm one-quarter Irish, and I say deport them all. How about those apples?

Anyone who does not want to become a citizen, I am fine deporting as well. Let me know if you have any real questions now.

Shortly after 9/11 there was a call for aliens from other countries to report and register. Included in that group who reported were 13,000 Pakistanis who were illegal. Not included was a massive wave of illegal Pakistanis and others who fled to Canada.

Illegals are not U.S. citizens. Neither I nor Sneator McCain are liberals.

You are living in a dream world.

How many World Trade Center bombings are acceptable for you?

How many thousands of potential deaths constitute an acceptable price to pay for knocking a few nickels off of a head of lettuce?

All it would take to prevent this ..is for the law (as it is now written)to be upheld. Sad...that the members of Congress would rather take the cowards way out.

Good point. We could have also prevented it, if most of us hadn't been too cowardly to speak up sooner.

Yep, Hayworth is worth more than just hay ..we need a hell of a lot more Hayworth's in Congress that have the courage to say, NO.

Honestly, what do you think the odds are that a wall would ever be put in place? They've been given the same excuses for years....and will continue to do so.

Absent that, shallow/empty promises to "fix the problem" and revolving amnesty every 15 years or so is all that has been, or will ever be, done.

My inference in using "momentum" wasn't weak, nor was it said weakly .. on the contrary.

mo·men·tum

1. Symbol p Physics. A measure of the motion of a body equal to the product of its mass and velocity. Also called linear momentum.

2. 1. Impetus of a physical object in motion.

2. Impetus of a nonphysical process, such as an idea or a course of events: The soaring rise in interest rates finally appeared to be losing momentum.

3. Philosophy. An essential or constituent element; a moment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And what I mean by that, quite seriously, is that there are intangible dynamics that occur that can propel movements, ideologies, and galvanize concepts forward as an unintended consequence... as in the volume of clanging "I'm leaving the party" rants.
As the owner of this site states,
"In our continuing fight for freedom, for America and our constitution and against totalitarianism, socialism, tyranny, terrorism, etc., Free Republic stands firmly on the side of right, i.e.,the conservative side. Believing that the best defense is a strong offense, we (myself and those whom I'm trying to attract to FR) support the strategy of taking the fight to the enemy as opposed to allowing the enemy the luxury of conducting their attacks on us at home on their terms and on their schedule.
Therefore, we wholeheartedly support the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive strikes on known terrorist states and organizations that are believed to present a clear threat to our freedom or national security. We support our military, our troops and our Commander-in-Chief and we oppose turning control of our government back over to the liberals and socialists who favor appeasement, weakness, and subserviency. We do not believe in surrendering to the terrorists as France, Germany, Russia and Spain have done and as Kerry, Kennedy, Clinton and the Democrats, et al, are proposing.
As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and-pro America.
We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc.
We also oppose the United Nations or any other world government body that may attempt to impose its will or rule over our sovereign nation and sovereign people. We believe in defending our borders, our constitution and our national sovereignty."
(snip)
"We are conservative activists dedicated to defending our rights, defending our constitution, defending our republic and defending our traditional American way of life."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Conservative values are at the heart of true FReepers, and that includes NOT going south, and not wimping out and going to the other side when every single issue desired is not satisfied at any one time.

There are overriding issues in the soup of controversial issues.

Thanks for the answer. We'll see what compromise bill, if any, makes it to the President's desk.

"Did Abe Lincoln split our nation asunder?"

So you don't have any answers, then, at least none that you will state publicly.

I thought as much. When you answer my question, then I'll consider yours. Maybe.

call your friends, family and anyone you know that feels as you do and get those protests out there on the street. Let yourself be seen as well as heard. You have got to move fast.

Right. That way, someone can throw a punch and get these Marxist coordinated marches the worldwide media exposure that you desire.

There were some who fled to Canada.

There were many others-including several thousand living in Midwood, Bklyn., a neighborhood I'm intimately familiar with-that simply returned to Pakistan.

So you see, when we want to do something about aliens we sure as hell can.

But he thinks that Mexicans, or Mexican-Americans if you will, if provided with amnesty will quite possibly be
"at least as successful (in his words) in `assimilating' as our former slaves", African Americans.
Why, there's a success story waiting to happen here and we're just holding them back . . .

All of you are complaining here. Don't you realize that all the protest marches that the illegal immigrants and their supporters did the last couple of weeks has spoke volumes. First, there were no counter anti-illegal immigrant marches. You mistakently thought calling, writing and emailing your senators would be enough. It isn't. Remember America is watching. When they don't see Americans marching against illegal immigration, a lot of people think that it's not that big a problem for most Americans. We need to start marching and I mean NOW. A visual memory of millions of Americans marching against illegal immigration speaks volumes both visually and figuratively. If you want illegal immigration to stop, if you want border security and you want no amnesty, call your friends, family and anyone you know that feels as you do and get those protests out there on the street. Let yourself be seen as well as heard. You have got to move fast.

It is good to see it too. It shows that this is not a forum for propaganda but free thought. It's a good gauge to go by on where traditionally republican voters are leaning now. It's pretty clear but I am counting on the knuckleheads in the house and senate ignoring it. When they do people will have good reason to remove them.

And once that happens, your vote is worthless.

No need to wait. My vote is ALREADY worthless! They proved that much today!

The only thing being compromised is our nation.

Our language-not yours, since you speak Spanish-and our culture.

The integrity of our votes.

That's what's being "compromised."
