You could see this one coming a mile away. As soon as Matt Lauer announced that Today was inaugurating a series called "One Nation Under God" on the role religion plays in our country, and that the first episode would focus on President Bush, you knew we were in for a bumpy ride.
The series plays off a new book, 'American Gospel', by Newsweek Managing Editor Jon Meacham. In his set-up [and I do mean set-up] piece, David Gregory claimed that "the Bush era has created not just a political but a religious divide."
Continued Gregory: "Critics have accused the president of using religion to close himself off from opposing points of view." Oh, I don't know, David. He seems to hear you pretty loud and clear.
Gregory asserted that "some see the president trying to fulfill God's mission."
Meacham wasted no time in asserting that poll numbers show that "a third of the country is nervous about the fact that organized religion - the Christian right as we understand it in a popular way - may have too much influence." Today didn't display the precise poll question asked, but it seems as if Meacham might have been extrapolating a general concern some have about the influence of organized religion into a specific objection to "the Christian right."
In describing the role of religion in our nation's founding, Meacham observed "the Founders understood that religion had to be a thread in the tapestry, not the whole tapestry. That it should shape the country, but not strangle it." Hard to say whether Meacham was making an invidious allusion to the current president, but there was no mistaking the elitist condescension in his very next sentence: "Homer once said, 'all men need the gods.'"

Today Show/NewsBusters ping.
This is probably the same one third that embraces deviancy, demands socialism and hates America to start with.
Clearly they have no right to influence the political process.
I thought Homer was a Christian.
David Gregory claimed that "the Bush era has created not just a political but a religious divide."
The ACLU and dims created the divide long before President Bush took office.
If you have faith, you will have HOPE, then comes, Charity because you want to share the good news of Gods' Powerful Grace, and feed his people who need this news, as well as food clothing, etc.
God Bless those who know the truth (Jesus Christ, Our Lord Saviour) for they will Enter The Kingdom of Heaven, and live a positive life here on earth.
ACLU members and other Commies, have no faith, many have sold thier souls, especially in Hollywood, So all I can do is pray that they will have the scales removed from thier eyes, as The Revelation Testament has suggested.
Ops4 God Bless America!
Oh good Lord ;)
Governs - I don't know how you did it today. I knew when that story started it was going to be a hit piece. Double Nexium for you today!
I've never seen the today show, well not since Dan Rather left.
Who is this Matt Lower person.
I don't think I make my mind up about who I vote for based on what some TV person thinks.
These people are usually shallow and perverted in their views.
Mos def. As said at the top, you could see this one coming, so I braced myself!
And these commie atheists in the media don't have a clue that they offend most Christians, especially when they lecture us.
It speaks volumes for NBC to pimp Meacham's book. And I love it when David Gregory spits in our eyes to quote: "the Founders understood that religion had to be a thread in the tapestry, not the whole tapestry. That it should shape the country, but not strangle it."
Many of us can forgive, Lauer & Gregory and the Today show, but we'll never forget.
The first two words in this title say all that needs to be said about Lauer.
If he was true to his profession he would not need to suggest anything. Indeed, he would state rather than suggest. He has lost sight of his role as a 'journalist' or 'reporter'.
I am so glad that the internet has exposed these folks for what they have become, Editorial writers attempting to hijack the 'news' as their primary tool for indoctrination into their own utopia based socialist/communist agenda.
Matt lauer ( and his ilk ) is to today's journalism as Osama bin laden is to today's Islam.
You have editors now? ;^)
Nothing surprising that they would eschew any religious influence.
Guess they thought slick willie's using the Bible as a prop on his way to BJs in the oval office was just dandy!
You just posted exactly what I was thinking!
Thanks, DC. Yes, I have editors at NewsBusters. They rarely if ever edit the actual language of my pieces, but do make suggestions on broader matters, and have their own screen capture abilities, which would come in handy today!
