New Poll: Americans Favor a Guest Worker Plan
Time ^ | March 31 2006 | JYOTI THOTTAM

Americans polled by TIME magazine show strong support for a guest-worker program and a process for undocumented workers to become citizens, but they take a tough stance on securing the borders. And most do not want illegal immigrants to have access to health care, public education or driver's licenses.

In the telephone survey of 1004 adults, conducted Wednesday and Thursday, 79% say they favor a guest worker program that would allow illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. for a fixed period of time — the main provision of the bill proposed by Senators John McCain and Edward Kennedy that is now under fierce debate in Congress. Only 47% of those polled say they support the tougher measure backed by some House conservatives, deporting all illegal immigrants back to their home countries.

Although Americans want to give illegal immigrants the chance to work in the U.S. temporarily and even earn citizenship—78% say illegal immigrants who learn English, have a job and pay taxes ought to have a chance at it—they also want better enforcement both at the border and inside the country. A large majority, 71%, favor major penalties for people who hire illegal immigrants; 62% want the U.S. to take "whatever steps are necessary" to secure the border with Mexico, including posting military forces; and 56% favor a 2,000-mile-long fence. That two-pronged approach to illegal immigration is the same one favored by President Bush, who wants both a guest worker program and tighter border security.

Americans Favor a Guest Worker Plan

I know of four: GWB and the three Senators on that committee.

"How did they conduct this poll and get what appears to be a totally contradictory result?"

It was a poll tweaked to fit agendas of the Senate bill. For authority it validated earlier polls saying the contrary. It's MSM mischief.

Those of us who work in construction will disagree with you. Yeah, there are some of us still doing the jobs Americans won't do and we are well paid.

I believe this poll is BS, but it will not help our cause in Congress. Wonder what Democratic focus group cobbled this poll together.

Funny. What's to prevent Bush from instituting tighter border security since 2000?

The American public favors getting rid of illegals. Period.

I wish that were true, but the real poll is taken in the marketplace, by Americans voting with their dollars. Somebody's paying out the money that the illegals come North for. Too many of our fellow Americans want that cheap nanny, lawn mower, or gardener.

Mostly his lack of a time machine.

Just yesterday people were telling me about how all the polls showed that Americans were opposed to Bush on this. Today they're saying this poll is BS. I find that amusing.

Sounds reasonable to me. Most American realize the value of Mexican labor provides to this country despite what most anti-immigrationist think.

It's no different from this poll.

http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=research_researchd74c

Asked whether they would favor "allowing illegal immigrants already working in the United States to register as guest workers for a fixed period of time, so that the government could keep track of them," 73% said they "favor"; 23% said "oppose"; 3% don't know.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with the basics of the poll...guest worker, no taxpayer support of medical, etc.

The number one problem to fix is the border. Before anything.

Then we have to deal with the 12+ million illegals. Deportation would be a CFG. Between the lawyers and the government bureaucracy it would be FUBAR in nothing flat.

After securing the border we have all illegals register and receive a tamper-proof new green card. No company can hire or no guest worker can work without it. If caught working without it the worker is deported and the company is heavily fined. Additionally the company provides health insurance.

It is the only realistic way to deal with this mess which has grown up while our politicians and enforcers buried their heads in the sand.

"Only 47% of those polled say they support the tougher measure backed by some House conservatives, deporting all illegal immigrants back to their home countries."

I love the way Time slants the news. "Only 47% is almost a majority." If it were 12%, I could see saying "only 12%."

Just remember, the basic difference between journalists and prostitutes is that prostitutes have higher ethical standards.

Too many of our fellow Americans want that cheap nanny, lawn mower, or gardener.

The reality is most Americans know what kind of work Mexican labor does, and most Americans don't want to do it. It is not like Mexicans are coming here taking our high tech jobs, management jobs, etc. They are picking fruit, busing tables, laying brick, gardening, etc. The rabid anti-immigration people are in denial. The numbers are not on their side.
