Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it. "I know (they) shouldn't have burned the Mexican flag," said Jacob Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore. "I heard it was raised above the American flag and that just irked me."
He said the turbulence was tied to debates going on in the state Legislature and Congress, where ideas ranging from offering illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship to making them felons are being floated.
Freshman Chelsea Garcia, 15, and junior Brittany Ramage, 16, said the unrest had more to do with long-running racial tensions at the school.
The week's events might have sparked some anger, Ramage said, "but kids aren't too deep about that stuff."
The Hispanic student who brought the Mexican flag said he was responding to a remark directed at him Wednesday. The flag-raising, flag-burning, and shoving match that followed happened before most students arrived at school.
Six students — three Hispanic and three white — will be disciplined, Principal Chad Wilson said.
Officials with the Apache Junction Unified School District would not specify what punishment the six face.
Wilson did say in a letter sent home to parents that there would be "increased supervision, including additional police officers, on the campus over the next couple of days."
School flagpoles have been lightning rods across the country this week, including an incident in which a Houston high-school principal was disciplined after he flew a Mexican flag underneath his campus' U.S. and state flags.
A new political awareness among students has also been grabbing attention, as thousands have walked out on classes to join rallies in Phoenix and elsewhere. More than 100 students from Mesa's Carson Junior High and Westwood High schools marched in protest on Mesa streets Tuesday.

Update: Local radio station now, caller says that he called AJ Police...the ROTC kid was arrested by the "school liason" for AJ Police.

That is a horrible act as well. I personally, have no tolerance for when Americans want to act like Palestinians and perform revenge attacks. Burning flags is BS, so is attacking private property! What will we have next, car swarms? As Americans we can solve our problems through reason, not by stupid tit for tat retaliatory acts. We can be better than that.

Your words, “no tolerance,” caught my attention. Just last night I was thinking, like a lot of other folks, “what is our world (the US, specifically) coming to?”
I'm not a Mexican. If I wanted to be one I'd move to Mexico. I've not a lick of tolerance for anyone wanting to change these United States into Mexico.
A friend of mine, a homosexual, asked what I would do about homosexuality if I could do anything at all. His question included would I have them executed. No. I wouldn’t go that far, but were I in charge I would certainly have a “no tolerance” attitude. If you’re homesexual, admit it, proud of it, laud it, then get your ass to jail where it will be appreciated for what it's worth.
As for Muslims, there again, no tolerance. At this point every mosque in this country would cease to exist. Every Muslim would have a sudden change of heart, commit to the values of this country or be put on their way back to from whence they came and re-learn how it is one rides a camel.
The bleeding hearts — those who would oppose that position by saying it affords no rights to Muslims – would be booted right along side. When we have people who would be horrified if there were a religion that said, "ok, go round up every pet – dog, cat, bird, whatever – and in the name of your religion you’re allowed to put its head on the chopping block on the downtown square," and yet afford the “right” to people who believe it’s ok to do just that to humans (infidels), something is sorely amiss.
When kids are being assaulted daily and the blame is laid on the defendant’s suffering some “disease” by a judge, then fine. At that point the judge becomes too diseased to be play a vital role in society. No tolerance. He can sit side by side with the defendant behind bars instead of sitting on a bench. No tolerance for either.
Sorry to say, but we’d best start following one path of the Koran: No Tolerance for Infidels.
Would you want your child attending a school with "long running racial tensions"? For most of these children, homeschooling and private school are NOT options. Those kids MUST show up at that government school. If they don't armed police will be at their doors!

the patriot militia and founding fathers were considered 'fanatics' in the 1700's by those chicken livered colonials who wanted to kiss Englands backside then--hopefully, some in America are waking up and finding out that 'freedom is not free'--I have no problem with "Legal" immigrants since they do not burn the flag of the USA and have the gall to parade with one of a "foreign nation" raised over their heads---wake up and see what has happened to the country that has protected you all of your life---

The law is being applied exactly wrong, arresting our patriotic kids and letting the invaders go free.
I am wearing the U.S. flag every day, too, everywhere I go, whether it's my big flag pin or flag t-shirts and/or my stars and stripes bandana scarf. I'm even going to buy some more flag clothing and make it my entire wardrobe forever! Putting a new flag out front, decals everywhere!
