Mexican flag burned at Apache Junction HS

Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it. "I know (they) shouldn't have burned the Mexican flag," said Jacob Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore. "I heard it was raised above the American flag and that just irked me."

He said the turbulence was tied to debates going on in the state Legislature and Congress, where ideas ranging from offering illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship to making them felons are being floated.

Freshman Chelsea Garcia, 15, and junior Brittany Ramage, 16, said the unrest had more to do with long-running racial tensions at the school.

The week's events might have sparked some anger, Ramage said, "but kids aren't too deep about that stuff."

The Hispanic student who brought the Mexican flag said he was responding to a remark directed at him Wednesday. The flag-raising, flag-burning, and shoving match that followed happened before most students arrived at school.

Six students — three Hispanic and three white — will be disciplined, Principal Chad Wilson said.

Officials with the Apache Junction Unified School District would not specify what punishment the six face.

Wilson did say in a letter sent home to parents that there would be "increased supervision, including additional police officers, on the campus over the next couple of days."

School flagpoles have been lightning rods across the country this week, including an incident in which a Houston high-school principal was disciplined after he flew a Mexican flag underneath his campus' U.S. and state flags.

A new political awareness among students has also been grabbing attention, as thousands have walked out on classes to join rallies in Phoenix and elsewhere. More than 100 students from Mesa's Carson Junior High and Westwood High schools marched in protest on Mesa streets Tuesday.

If there is an image problem, may I suggest it is up to the Latino community to mend it -- and not by trying to make others feel guilty about what they can plainly discern with their eyes and ears.

Bingo. Silence = consent?

The patriots would have thrown you into Boston Harbor along with the tea, quisling.

Name-calling isn't a sign that you're winning your argument. But let me get you on the record: Are you actually recommending illegal violence and destruction of property? Are you recommending that Freepers violate local, state and Federal law? Because if you are, you are no patriot. And I think the mods will be very interested in your answer.

We need to blanket the FCC with the TV and radio stations that try to overturn the laws of our great Republic. Pull their license

Do you think the Minutemen or some such project could monitor those Spanish language stations and report it to the FCC?

I didn't insult you, I drew a parallel. Would you have told Washington to disband the continental army because he was committing illegal violence and destruction of property? You would have been tarred and feathered as a tory. Those are the facts.

Don't put your odiferous words in my mouth, either. I didn't namecall, but you sure deserve it.

A sure sign of a loser is to respond with a red herring, as you did, Red.

As a peace loving American citizen I regret that this incident had to happen but when someone from another foreign sovereign nation comes into my country and insults me as well as all American citizens the way these illegal alien immigrants are doing then there will be those among us citizens that will inevitably start to push back, hard, and rightfully so.

I, like many other veterans fought in wars and spilled our blood on battlefields fighting to defend old glory and for what it represents for Americans and even though I am an aging (starting to age anyway) disabled combat veteran I for one will do whatever it takes to defend our flag and nation and what it stands for even if it means having to defend it from our politicians who no longer give a crap about us citizens and from those who have evil plans for us. No one, and I mean NO ONE is going to come into my country uninvited and remain against my wishes and commence to tell me, no, order me around will soon learn what it is like to face some very angry former combat veterans. Make no mistake, I'm not making threats, only a sincere promise.

Like many other American citizens I have just about had my fill of these in-your-face law breaking miscreant scofflaws and their phony enablers in Washington and cities around OUR nation. Politicians had better wake up because they are playing with fire here. Americans are fast reaching their boiling point over this issue.

"Did the Boston Tea Party disturb you, as well? That involved the destruction of private property."

It disturbs me and it disturbed Benjamin Franklin.

Why do things need to calm down? Do we calm down to the point that we just idly accept whatever the leftists and Mexican Government wants to impose on this country?

No, it needs to be faced and resisted NOW. Across this country and physically if necessary.

Thank God our forefathers didn't have your outlook on things. We'd still be under Her Majesty the Queen.

Good morning.
"The students who burned the Mexican flag should not be suspended or expelled. The ones who put the Mexican flag up there should be expelled and deported immediately."

I really have to question the fact that three of each race were expelled by Principle Chad. That just sounds too PC to be valid.

No ones shooting yet.

The solution to the ongoing invasion is to build a fence, mine it, install machine guns, and shoot anyone attempting entry. I volunteer for that duty.

The solution for illegals and their spawn already in this country is to enforce laws against employers, round up all of those who entered illegally [and their spawn], seize all assets financial and tangible, and deport immediately. All 20 million...

Those wishing reentry after deportation can apply for temporary visas after a background checks and biometrics...and they must be able to read, write and speak English...

Further those wishing work visas can apply for citizenship, and must agree that they are not entitled to any free government services including: food stamps, education, medical. Further they must post a 2500.00 bond, the first year, and every year thereafter, and can only claim the funds in the bond if they self deport after their visa expires, and they have reapplied for reentry.

Upon the granting of citizen ship if they are so lucky, the bond proceeds become the property of the United States Treasury.

"Six students — three Hispanic and three white — will be disciplined, Principal Chad Wilson said."

Actually, what I heard is that the three white students
are going to be summarily lined up against the gym's exterior wall and set aflame before being shot.

The three Hispanic students are going to have a concert performed for them and then taken out for ice cream.

I grew up and lived alot of my life in the southwest. I have many friends of Mexican descent. I don't have a problem understanding that this is not a legal immigrant issue. Why do so many other people?

BTW, what is the Governor's view of all this in California. I been waiting for him to get on TV and start acting like a leader and start calming this down. Esp with the kids. Maybe he is speaking and its not getting national play. If not why not is he on vacation?
This happened in Arizona. Our governor has actually encouraged the Mexican children to protest and says she supports it. Just not during school hours.
Yet, you will also read how she says she's going to get "tough" on border security. Hope no one has been holding ther breath over that one.

Good morning.

Welcome to the FreeRepublic.

Is your diocese one of those that was out there supporting the protesters?
