Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton invoked the Bible yesterday to criticize a stringent border security measure that, among other things, would make it a federal crime to offer aid to illegal immigrants.
"It is hard to believe that a Republican leadership that is constantly talking about values and about faith would put forth such a mean-spirited piece of legislation," she said of the measure, which was passed by the House of Representatives in December and mirrored a companion Senate bill introduced last week by Senator Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican and the majority leader.
"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scripture because this bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself," she said. "We need to sound the alarm about what is being done in the Congress."
Mrs. Clinton, who is running for re-election this year and is leading in polls for the Democratic presidential nomination, spoke at a news conference in Manhattan with more than 30 immigrant leaders after meeting with them privately.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of mounting urgency, as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called on its flock to oppose the measure, and tens of thousands of immigrants around the country stepped up a series of protest rallies in anticipation of a Senate vote on competing immigration bills next week.
Mr. Frist's bill, like the House measure, would make it a crime to be in the United States without proper papers and would add guards and fencing along the Mexican border, and speed deportation.
Some versions, including one proposed by Senator Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, would expand the definition of alien smuggling to include help to illegal immigrants already here.

Hillary Clinton, biblical scholar?
Has anyone ever stopped for a moment and wondered why there was no such thing as an "illegal alien" in Biblical times? Once you understand why this was the case, you'll realize why this is such an idiotic issue to contest on religious grounds.
You are babbling. There is no need to ask the question AGAIN. You have asked the question over and over.
"HR 4437 could" sure it might, it could, it just may happen. Time for you to take your ridlin and sit in the corner.
Amen!
How dare she. Karl Marx said that religion is the opiate of the people, and she is trying to seduce Christians with her opportunistic use of scripture to further her own goals.
I'd say to Mrs. Bill Clinton, is it not true that bearing false witness is a sin? How would she explain the lies she told to fire the White House Travel Office and Billy Dale? How does she blame some creation of her own warped mind, a VRWC, was behind her husbands prolific scandals?
How does she answer this, thou shall not steal? What about the 1000 FBI Files of her political opponents she stold? What about White House furniture and artifacts?
And, most of all how does she address her husbands philandering?
Mrs. Bill Clinton you are one big ridiculous phony and you defile the Bible with your vulgar and vile political posturing.
If Mrs. Bill Clinton truly believed in the Bible, she would not endorse abortion, the killing of innocence, nor would she have ever recommended an abortion supporter, Mrs. Ruth Ginsberg for the Supreme Court.
Phony is as phonies do. Why doesn't she just go back to hiding behind food carts and Senator Barbara Macowlski? That was not phony. That was Mrs. Bill Clinton.
I thought she was against pushing religion onto others.
I'm going to plead ignorance of the laws of the ancient world yet there are at least two reasons why I think that the various societies were concerned about "aliens"
(1) They built expensive walls around their cities
(2) And if one wants to get "Biblical" about it, think real hard about the point and purpose of the event at Babel. We can speculate all day on specifically why there was the dividing of men into separate and distinct nations, but with the abundance of empirical evidence the fact is clear there is such a thing as Divine Apartheid. I submit that no matter how much the misotheists wish to social engineer an anti-Babel system, the nations will always be suspicious if not down-right hostile to "foreigners". Xenophobia is as old as Babel and will be with us (at least in its secular sense) until the 2nd Coming.
If her hideous heinous comes within a 1,000 feet of a Bible, it's probably to use it in some destructive way in some sort of satanic black mass ritual.
She has about as much knowledge of it as she has of what Bill has been doing recently with what bimbo--well, probably some less than that.
If she knew The Bible in any kind of remotely respectful way, she'd be running around in sackcloth and ashes for the rest of her life crying "Mea culpa; woe is me a sinner!"
AS it is, hell would likely freeze over before we see that.
Ms. Clinton is at odds with the bible. This is the problem of the Liberals they try to take political issues like Immigration reform and cast moral guidelines on them and they take completely moral issues like abortion and cast political guidelines on them.
You know what they just don't get it and to top it off if you saw the clip of her invoking Jesus name she appeared uneasy and embarassed just to openly say his name. She is fooling no one.
ping
Don't know why she is so upset.
The Republican bill if passed will only make it a crime to give aid to an illegal alien. If she would just read on in the same bill the Republicans will make all those that want to come here and those that are here illegal, legal so everyone will be able to get aid.
Ain't that grand. That the new way of doing business and fighting crime. If someone is doing something illegally that turns a buck well just pass a law that makes it legal and everybody's happy.
Too bad we don't have a party that represents the American citizens that are already here.
This is pure Rev. Wallis. He is the hired gun consulant the DNC hired to teach democrats to speak "religious".
This is just "me too" politics.
Hitlary is trying to speak red state.
Clearly Jesus is unaware of how our tax dollars are being wasted educating and providing medicine for these illegals.
Thanks for the ping.
I just could not say what I was thinking!
Being an Old Testament kind of guy, I think Nehemiah had it right:
exactly, she needs all those illegal voters for sure.
