How to spot a baby conservative (Ultra mega barf alert!)
The Toronto Star ^ | Mar. 19, 2006 | KURT KLEINER

Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative.

At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals.

The study from the Journal of Research Into Personality isn't going to make the UC Berkeley professor who published it any friends on the right. Similar conclusions a few years ago from another academic saw him excoriated on right-wing blogs, and even led to a Congressional investigation into his research funding.

But the new results are worth a look. In the 1960s Jack Block and his wife and fellow professor Jeanne Block (now deceased) began tracking more than 100 nursery school kids as part of a general study of personality. The kids' personalities were rated at the time by teachers and assistants who had known them for months. There's no reason to think political bias skewed the ratings — the investigators were not looking at political orientation back then. Even if they had been, it's unlikely that 3- and 4-year-olds would have had much idea about their political leanings.

Lemme guess: that kid is going to grow up to become another one of those beggars in Minneapolis's Block E.

I always have to laugh at the way liberals claim that they recognize complexity" when they have such a simplistic stance and knee-jerk reaction to everything.

"and whining conservative kids grow up thinking that individual initiative is key."

Actually, the whining conservative kids grew up to embrace enormous medicare drug entitlements, pay to play "earmarks", and "vincente fox is my lover" bumper-stickers.

Sounds like Al Franken.

Not a representative sample. First of all it was Berkeley. Second, it was nursury school. Many conservative kids were home with their stay-at-home moms.

You prove a good point, that poll numbers can be twisted to obtain any desired results. But even in your hypothetical poll, the data would be collected over a fairly short period of time. There's no way you could ever retrieve data (not realistically) about those same prisoners' penchant for "whininess" as a child.

I bet the liberal nursery school kids threw a nuclear tantrum every-time another kid wouldn't share their toys with them.

"The popular self-confident kids, who had everything handed to them, became liberals."

Are you saying that people who think the world revolves around them, use and step on others to take what they want, then assuage their consciences by tossing some cash (never to the point of sacrifice, though) to the latest and hippest do-good cause so their friends tell them how magnanimous they are is what the "confident, resilient, self-reliant kids" grew up to be?

Do you realize you've described most of Hollywood? And, I'd venture to guess, most of the friends of the author of this piece.

Switzerland, in the early '90s. They had under 1% unemployment then. Fantasy Land. It just felt so WRONG to me!

I know the one you are talking about, but I don't have a link to it. The DUmmies had this on their home page, I am willing to bet that is where the "Liberal" got it from.

Yep, I bet if they took this little "test" here in Indiana the exact opposite would be true.

If I were stuck in the depraved Land of Queerdor where the shadows lie (AKA The People's Barfocracy of Berkley), I'd probably whine too. Abused children have a right to complain.

No, most Conservatives follow the G. Gordon Liddy doctrine on that one. "I'd kill myself, but there's so many others I'd like to watch go first."

...95 kids from the Berkeley area

Being brainwashed by every Berkelidite these kids come in contact with, I'm sure they actually believe they are 'main stream' & conservative and that conservatism is actually the liberal position.

Helter-Skelter!
