Whether to aid migrants may be question of faith [Churches aid Illegals]

In a tiny house on the West Side, two nuns provide a daily break for Mexican immigrant mothers struggling to raise families in a foreign culture.

The nuns teach English, computer skills and arts and crafts. They celebrate birthdays and invite residents to the local Catholic church for Masses. If requested, they give advice on applying for citizenship.

It's free. No questions asked. Not about religion. Not about legal status.

But the work of the 7-month-old Presentation Ministry Center and similar organizations could be in jeopardy, according to opponents of a bill approved by the U.S. House in December.

As part of a proposed overhaul of immigration law, the House wants to make it a crime for any individual or group to knowingly assist the nation's estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants.

Whether Catholic, Protestant, Jewish or Islamic, religious leaders say critical social services to the undocumented potentially could be reduced — if not stopped — should that part of the bill become law.

It could force them into a moral quandary: Obey civil law or God's mandate to show compassion to the poor.

Many religious leaders already have made their choice.

"If they want to put a bunch of priests and ministers in jail, then we're going to have to face the consequences," said Father Jim Loiacono, pastor of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Eagle Pass, four blocks from the Texas-Mexico border. "It's heartless because these are people who are so desperate there's no way we can turn them away."

Again, if they reported these illegals, nothing would be done. Identify who is REALLY responsible. You're scapegoating these nuns. The real offenders are sitting in fancy offices. Go after them.

Your repeated argument continues to be meaningless.

I am going after the folks in the fancy offices. That has nothing to do with the Nuns' and Priests' legal and moral obligations. If they report and nothing comes of it, their hands are clean. To not report and in fact ENCOURAGE illegal immigration is a sin and direct contributor to the deaths of which I spoke.

The fact there are other contributors doesn't matter a whit. You are like the person who sees a mugging and says "well, last time I saw a mugging the cops took 1/2 hour to get here and by that time the bad guys left. So this time I won't report it because it is pointless."

Do I need to spell it out in logic terms for you?

Oh, now you're talking about "sin" and not law. I can't help you with that, but I assume that the "sin" part was checked out by the priest. I leave that stuff to the religious folks.

"Correct, I am married to a Patrick Henry American. I say that, because for two months prior to my wife taking her citizenship test she went around telling everyone, "Just give me liberty or give me death.""

Sounds like you've married a fine patriotic lass. ;)

Shame to see our politicians ready to hand citizenship out to a bunch of greedy, impatient criminals especially with so many good law-abiding folk waiting their turn patiently.

OK. Sin IMHO. I think doing something that kills people is a sin. But, hey, that is just me.

But thanks for agreeing with the rest of my post.

Christians should pray for the conversion of members of the Mexican gov't to Christian ways. This will abate the illegal mass immigration to the US from Mexico. The Mexican gov't is corrupt. The US gov't isn't going to do anything. Birds of a feather...

The nun asks if it should be a crime to help these indigent illegals.

That is open to debate, I suppose, but the matter is moot right now.

Right now, it is a crime. On that point, there is no debate.

The Israelites were not in Egypt illegally.
You cannot compare them to our current illegal alien problem, altho you apparently would like to.

Clearly then, you believe we should redistribute all of our wealth around the world so that we all have equal amounts? Otherwise, the *lucky* ones have all the money and that's not fair?

The law makes someones status illegal. For instance, if I come into your home without your permission, I am there illegally. There, was that simple enough for you to understand?

Please call them INVADERS and don't compare them to people who are legal aliens!

President Bush has been great on most things except for our border.
He has been great on the war on terrorists.
But on the border he is a gross failure.
He acted fast and correct on the 3,000+ people murdered at the world trade center.
He ignores the many rapes, murders and robberies which might be larger than the murders and money loss at the world trade center.
More Americans are abducted on the border of Mexico than in Iraq!

Start building the fence.

It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.

I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.

No, it is not a matter of luck. How can you possibly think that?

It is unarguable that the reason that poverty around the world exists is because of corrupt government. Look at the many countries that were relatively properous under colonial rule that have descended into poverty since the colonial power left. The good government practices left and poverty and chaos entered.

Our system of government relies upon a common respect for law. We pay taxes, obey traffic laws to the extent that we do mostly because of our common agreement, not for fear of prosecution. Now we have an invasion of people who start out by breaking a law. Taken to its conclusion we will start down the same slope that will make us equal to Mexico, or Zimbabwe or Haiti.

And yes, we value our fellow citizens more than those who were not lucky enouch to be born here. Our fellow citizens have upheld their end of the bargain, respecting our laws, supporting our common government. Our fellow citizens made sacrifices to have that hospital there for them. It employed our fellow citizens.

You obviously are a tremendous globalist. Perhaps you should live in a country that has opened its borders to more emigrants that America has in our history. (Hint there aren't any.) Rather than advocate for flooding the ultimately limited resources of our nation-state (still a viable concept), why don't you go to Mexico and help them organize a viable society?

"I believe Christians should take care of illegals' immediate needs, (food, water, whatever) and then counsel them to go back to their home countries and apply to enter the United States legally."

Father Jim Loiacono, pastor of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Eagle Pass, four blocks from the Texas-Mexico border.

If this cowardly selfish twit actually gave a rat's behind for the "poor" he'd un-ass himself and go the four blocks to help the Mexicans where they live. But that's not the real agenda is it, padre. Lying in the name of the Lord is not a good thing, you POS, even though you yourself are probably a flaming atheist and couldn't care less. For now.

Hey Raycpa, sine you 're quoting scripture about Illegal aliens, here's another one for you:

John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. (KJV)
