(AP) CHICAGO Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Oberweis said after a televised debate tonight that he has gone so far as to ask rival conservative Bill Brady to drop out of the race.
Oberweis and Brady traded jabs tonight during their last debate before Tuesday's primary election.
Political observers say the two appear to be splitting the conservative vote -- which could be helping G-O-P front-runner Judy Baar Topinka, a social moderate.
Their sparring left candidate Ron Gidwitz stuck in the middle as he largely steered clear of the bickering.
Topinka sat out the debate, saying she is tired of listening to criticism from her opponents.
The wide-ranging discussion covered everything from the film "Brokeback Mountain" to what kinds of cars the candidates drive.
That seems quite arrogant. That seems close to a bouncing offense. Illinois is not as depressing as California, but it is depressing.
Oh, no. Brady's spitting up blood now. Can he hang on for the fifteenth round? :-)
What a couple of goofballs. They should join forces; one of them could be the Lt. Governor. Sheesh.
Insanity on Brady's part. He should have dropped out two weeks ago or supported Oberweis from the beginning. A slaughter coming up in the fall.
Could be worse, at least Illinois hasn't crossed the rubicon into New Jersey, New York, or Taxachusetts territory... yet.
I'm voting for Oberweis for sure. Plus I like his ice cream (He owns Oberweis Dairy). They still will deliver actual bottled milk to homes like in the old days, and their ice cream is to die for (or from). That alone gets my vote. Plus I like his anti-illegal immigration stance.
You should see Illinois these days. Swarming w/illegals. Well, actually, maybe you did, as they were all out on the streets of Chicago last week, thousands of them, protesting the immigration bill in Congress. I knew it was bad, but not how bad till I saw the evening news with the streets of Chicago swarming w/illegals. A frightening sight.
I'm frankly not enamored by any of them. Were I an IL voter, I'd probably vote for Brady, but the rest are simply distasteful.
Oberweis is running ads with Phyllis Schafly endorsing him. Schafly is urging all conservatives to support Oberweis. She implies that Brady is a RINO for "stealing votes" from Oberweis.
Exactly fieldmarhsaldj. I'm voting for Brady also. The recent antics with Looserweis has left a severe distaste in my mouth.
I like Brady b/c he is talking about the issues and Looserweis has been trying to get him to throw mud. Straw poll? Calling him a liar when Oberweis has his facts wrong. It's sad.
If anyone should drop out of the race, it should be Mr. Oberweis and let a class act like Senator Brady win this primary.
for being so DEM, Illinois has surprisingly low taxes...its income tax is a flat 3% making it the lowest in the country among states that have income taxes.
Spitting up blood? I don't think so. I hope that Senator Brady at least beats Mr. Oberweis. Looserweis has done too much to make a lot of people I know very upset with politics in general.
We'll see. When the voters hear these latest antics, hopefully they will be leaving the loony train of Loopyweis and joining the victory train of Brady.
Go Bill!
Well, I'm not an IL voter, so I don't have a say. Down here in TN, we can't even get the Republican party to run a candidate against a corrupt 'Rat administration. All I can tell you folks is vote your conscience in this matter. Some will vote for Oberweis in an attempt to stop Topinka, which is completely understandable, but Oberweis has, as was pointed out, reinvented himself and his positions so many times that one has to question his commitments and his core principles.
If the marginally more acceptable Brady pulls enough votes to keep Oberweis away from the nomination, I can't necessarily fault Brady for doing that, either. If Oberweis had maintained consistent principles throughout his campaigns, as opposed to sticking a moistened finger in the air to ascertain where the political winds were blowing, perhaps he wouldn't find himself in such a pickle. As I said, I don't envy IL GOP primary voters, this is not exactly an inspiring cast of characters that would lead the state back to greatness again. If IL is to remain mediocre, let the 'Rats take full credit.
