You think ANWR is dead? Well think again, people. (Senate Vote Tonight)
Anwr.org ^

Under the radar screen, the Senate has marked up the 07 budget to include ANRW drilling. There is a vote tonight in the Senate starting around 5pm eastern time on a measure by Maria Cantwell to remove ANRW from the budget. This time it should pass in the Senate before moving on to the House.

All you folks who thought the matter was dead were not paying attention. ANWR is alive and well, and starting tonight, we are one step closer to soaking those Caribou in crude oil. (that is a joke for the humorless among us)

Drill, baby. DRILL!!

"Senate Resources Chairman Pete Domenici commented before the vote that 10 years and 3 months ago Congress voted to open ANWR that was vetoed by President Clinton. If that had passed ANWR would be producing today and American debt imported oil dependence would be dramatically reduced."

VERY GOOD POINT.

"In addition, the oil companies are so extremely protective of the environment that if you pour a cup of cold coffee on the ground, you're gone on the next plane, no appeal or second chance. If you shoot a rabid fox, ditto. The drill area is the size of a small parking lot, and the entire operation has considerably less impact on the environment than a crowd of tree-huggers walking all over the forest every weekend."

Let's be more exact ...
Drilling in ANWR has less environmental impact than the SanFransisco-hippy-techno-funk-eco-freak "Burning Man" yearly shindig out in the Nevada desert.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that extending them through 2016 would cost $1.5 trillion — 10 times Bush's proposed Medicare and Medicaid cuts."

Absolutely nuts... CBO doesnt do dynamic scoring so they pretend tax cuts that pay for themselves cost and arm and a leg, and *never* count the cost of higher taxes on the economy.

Not making the tax cuts permanent is equal to massive tax increases, and anyone allowing tax increases is nuts.

"Now if my math is correct using your 10 billion barrels, as you can see, the total amount of oil that could be extracted from those targeted drilling plateforms is not that much oil based on the US daily needs."

That's a silly statement, given the very numbers you use (and I agree with) ... by your own calculation that 10 billion barrels ($600 billion worth of oil) in ANWR is more than the ENTIRE oil consumption for a whole year ... this is $600 billion worth of oil! 10 billion barrels could reduce our oil imports by 10% for two decades!
We produce 5 million barrels a day .. this could boost our US oil production by 30%, for 2 decades.

"10 billion barrels of crude oil is a drop in the bucket as to what the US needs dictate."

'drop in a bucket' implies a small fraction under 1% ... this 10 billion barrels is more than what US consumes in a year, so 15 months of supply... or 12% of our entire needs for the next decade. Not a drop in the bucket, but a rather substantial slice of the pie.

Any way you slice it, it is a HUGE boon to our energy trade balance and energy production.

We would get about one million barrels a day from ANWR (about the same as what we import from Saudi Arabia every day). DRILL IT ALREADY!!! geeeeez

I am tired. I have been on for some fifteen hours, past my bed time.
My original statement was based on web sites that said, and other Freeper made comment on, that one estimate was that ANWR could contain a total of 10 billion barrels total.
From a web site using 2004 info, I found that the US dailey consumption in oil was 20 million gallons. I multiplied that by 360 days and came up with 7 billion some barrels.
So if one look at the total 10 billion estimate over according to some web sites, e.g. USGS site, etc., was the total capacity of ANWR. AND. This oil would be extracted over between 7 to 10 years based on the web site verbage, that in essence we would not bolster our supply by any signifcant amount.
Daily US consumption = 20 million
1 Year US consumption = 7 billion
Life of ANWR wells 10 billion total, with say a rough average at full production of 1 billion per year.
So if you read above carefully you will see what I based my original statements on.
Afterward Freeper thakney corrected my old data with what he knows is current. Some 36 billion barrels for ANWR 2002 Site.
He added that a lot more would once full production be able to be pumped on a yearly basis then my old data provided. I conceed graciously and thank him for his correctlions.
I also in each replie stated no matter what the numbers where we MUST drill and even convince congress that other areas of potential Alaskan soil with high probability areas should be drilled. So I would have assumed at that point it was a dead issue. But I respect your input so felt obligated to respond. I gotta hit the sack, my eye balls are shot. Do have a pleasant upcoming day.

Although the President supports ANWR, he has not been vocal enough about it. Maybe a national address to the country on the importance of drilling ANWR, and/or repeated pushes for it publicly as he travels the country. This is so close that a big Presidential public push is needed!!!

Mr. President, let's spend some political capital on ANWR!!

Fully agree. This POTUS does not have to worry about re-election. He has absolutely nothing to loose. But it cannot just be him. He needs the hill to come out of their ant hills and admit the gig is up. We must use all resources at our disposal to work toward energy independence.
But here is a though I have not brought up before and I believe has gone unnoticed on these oil related posts.
No environmental whackos to have to deal with. Just potential huge profits to be made under the right situations.
And I would not be surprised in the lest if many on the hill against local drilling, as well as fence sitters have this in mind. So no one wants to take the chance of being an outcast for the fight for US interior drilling and exploration. In short, get cheap Arabian crude with minimal investments.

Jonah Goldberg didn't say. Maybe you're just supposed to flap your hands at them and say, "Shoo!" Or maybe you're supposed to let them attack you, since only conservatives would work on an evil project like an oil-drilling operation, and if you're a conservative you deserve to be infected with rabies.
