This supercell has been dropping tornadoes (it is night so difficult to see) from south of Tulsa, across to nw Arkansas and moving into Mo in a few minutes.

When daylight, we may have much more damage, but this tornado (or spawns) has been moving nearly 100 miles, doing damage.

Golfball size to tennis ball to softball size hail, up to 18 inches deep in some locations.

Eureka Springs and Holiday Island, Arkansas, are next areas in its path--immediately.

Supercell moving out of nw Arkansas into sw Missouri. Could be on track toward Springfield, MO.

Temps are staying warm, low 70's, so storm could maintain strength for a while.

Image captured near Rogers, AR of tornado there just moments ago. [Chris in Rogers uploaded this to a local TV station.]

Samantha McGee of Bella Vista, AR, uploaded this image of a hailstone that fell in Bella Vista.

I just called my parents and they're okay. (No power.) They live in a subdivision near 6th street, and south of South Grand.

My prayers go out to all in the path of these storms.

On-scene spotters are calling in.

Some houses in Benton County, AR, have been completely demolished --- just piles of rubble.

So far, no reports of deaths---but it is early. The storms only passed there about 30 minutes ago.

Field house at Bentonville, AR High School had roof blown off.

Spotter is traveling around Benton County, AR to try to get an idea of damage.

He just said some people on (farm) tractors are already out moving trees that had fallen on the roads.

[Don't these people know they are supposed to wait for FEMA? I guess that only applies to New Orleans. lol]

Here in Wichita, looks like we missed all the excitement. Remarkably gusty winds earlier in the day and that was it.

Getting Started in Tornado and Thunderstorm Spotting

The Role of the Spotter
While movies and documentaries often focus on "storm chasers" who roam the plains in search of tornadic storms for research data collecting, video taping or, yes, thrill seeking, a more direct service to the public is provided by the "storm spotter". The storm spotter serves a community by participating in an organized effort to watch for storms approaching the community and warn of the formation of tornadoes or other threatening severe weather. Even with the use of Doppler radar there is a need for spotters in the field. The radar can only detect the parent circulation that spawns tornadoes, information is needed about whether tornadoes are actually being produced and their precise location. Also, certain types of tornadoes can form before a Doppler radar signature is detected.

If you are interested in becoming a SkyWarn trained spotter please visit the NOAA website for training dates and times. The training is FREE and is a community service. Although 'spotters' are most heard from during storm season, they are active year round in regards to all types of severe weather. I took the training and renew it annually simply because I spend a lot of time in the great outdoors. It has come in quite handy over the summers.

PS> you don't need to be a ham radio operator either, anyone from the general public is welcome
