March 20, 2006 issue - In New Orleans to preach to 1,000 clergy gathered at the First Baptist Church therehis first sermon in eight monthsthe Rev. Billy Graham toured the hard-hit city last week. Afterward, the 87 year-old Graham, who has also just published a new book, The Journey: How to Live by Faith in an Uncertain World, spoke with NEWSWEEKs Jon Meacham by telephone. Edited excerpts:
This is your first trip to the coast after Katrina. What are your impressions?
This is the greatest disaster that I have ever seen, and Ive seen many, all over the world. Mile after mile after mile, and not a house standing, not a thing that has been left untouched by Katrina. Its overwhelming to me. After my first tour, in fact, I was so emotional that I could not even talk to my wife for a while.

Must be a fundamentalist. They are experts on the salvation of others.
That's one of the things I dislike about liberals. They think they (and only they) know what's right for me and their opinion counts more than mine because they are the all-knowing.
How many people have you introduced to God? It's so easy to throw stones at other people's work, rather than do any heavy lifting yourself, isn't it?
Most likely, you're just trying to get a rise out of some on this forum. You envision yourself coming down from the mountaintop with the stone tablets themsevles!!! Laughable!!
All I have to do is mention idolaters, and they step forward. LOL.
With no defense for your idolatry, you revert to personal slights on the messenger. I expect a lot more of that as I continue to smash the idols of the Idolaters.
Fundamentalist? As in adhering to the Gospel of the Bible. As opposed to false gospels, conjured up in the minds of men, who seek popularity and the approval of the world.
Guilty as charged.
So what kind of Christian are you?
hmmmm.... let me see. Billy Graham. Leads MILLIONS of people to Jesus Christ and God, but doesn't know his Bible? Or is it that God himself is displeased with Billy Graham for doing the work he has done? Enlighten me.
I once had a professor of Religion in college (Luthern) that stated the "Billy Graham is no theologin". I have a feeling that God is more impressed by the heart of men than their "knowledge". There are MANY theologins that will never see heaven. Their "knowledge" will not help them at all on Judgement Day.
You have clearly identified yourself as an elitist who knows far more than us ordinary Joes.
I hope the Lord enjoys all the daily guidance you must be giving Him.
"Their "knowledge" will not help them at all on Judgement Day."
Neither will their popularity.
My religion and my relationship with the Lord is very personal and bears no resemblance to flambouyant judgements sent out to us dumb-dumb sinners.
Please go judge someone else to satisfy you need do that sort of thing.
As long as you present yourself as the authority of what is Christian and what is not...which you have clearly been doing, all kinds of red flags go up in my mind. You definitely have an axe to grind, but I don't think using religion is the way to get your revenge against the rest of us.
LOL! Get over yourself.
Your religion is one of your own making. An offense to God's 1st Commandment - though shall have no other gods before me. Hence, your angst in having me call you an idolater. The conscience that God gave you convicts you. You know what you are doing is wrong. But attempt to deny it to the God who sees and knows all. Thereby denying God.
When you are willing to forsake your idolatry and submit yourself to a perfect God and His law, please review the link I provided you.
Instead of trying to draw people in, you repulse them with judgmentalism.
If you're trying to lead people to the Lord, let me suggest that you don't start out by insulting and judging them. You don't win many friends by constantly telling people how wrong they areand how right you are.
Your way is the only way.
Let me think now, what other religion that has been on the news lately, does that?
excellent points...but it's hard to have an exchange with those who think they are right and the ONLY pov that counts.
I have no interest in the gospel of Capt Norm. The Bible tells me what is true, what to do, when to do it and how to do it. Your arrogance has you believing that you know better than God.
Are you a Christian?
Leave me alone. I am wilfully IGNORING you.
Or your hands over your eyes, or are your fingers in your ears? :)
"To employ soft words and honeyed phrases in discussing questions of everlasting importance; to deal with errors that strike at the foundations of all human hope as if they were harmless and venial mistakes; to bless where God disapproves, and to make apologies where He calls us to stand up like men and assert, though it may be the aptest method of securing popular applause in a sophistical age, is cruelty to man and treachery to Heaven. Those who on such subjects attach more importance to the rules of courtesy than they do to the measures of truth do not defend the citadel, but betray it into the hands of its enemies. Love for Christ, and for the souls for whom He died, will be the exact measure of our zeal in exposing the dangers by which men's souls are ensnared" (quoted in a sermon by George Sayles Bishop, author of The Doctrines of Grace and Kindred Themes, 1910).
You have some kind of bone to pick with Billy Graham and it shows in your words.
If it were someone like Jim Bakker, or Bennie Hinn you were referring to, that might make some sense. But instead you come riding in on your high horse declaring that your judgement in things religious, is greater than enyone else's.
Your approach is what drives people away.
The words "judge not that ye be not judged" comes to mind. Perhaps they were redacted from your Bible, or they apply only to ordinary people and not you.
A grudge, like the one you seem to have against Rev. Graham, is a heavy burden to carry. He is along in years and will soon face the Lord himself. I can't see why you insist on inserting your judgement in the mean time. Worshipping God is the basis of my religious beliefs, not trying to pretend to be God's second in command like you are obviously doing.
(If that's not what you're doing, you definitley have a problem with expressing yourself 'cause that how it comes off.)
As for me, I'll let the Lord make the judgements and let you provide the comic relief.
