Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

RIGHTALK RADIO: Peter Paul discusses Bill Clinton trial with Paul Rodriguez - 1:05pm Eastern
rightalk.com ^ | 4-13-06 | dfu

LISTEN ONLINE AT 1:05pm Eastern

Peter Paul makes his first appearance on radio since a trial date was set in the case of Paul v Clinton.

Of course, you have not been informed in the mainstream media that defendant Bill and material witness Hillary are soon to be deposed.

It is almost as if it never happened. I spoke to Wolf Blitzer's producer today.

She didn't even know Bill Clinton was going to trial. This is just amazing.

Chelsea is on the witness list. We are curious to see whether there is a perjury gene.

Among the Hollywood elite witness list are Streisand, Pitt, Travolta, Cher, and a number of others.

Lynn Swann should be glad to hear that slimy Ed Rendell will be deposed.

Tune in for some fun today. Please help spread the word because the MSM will have to be dragged into this kicking and screaming.

A former president standing trial in a major business fraud is apparently not newsworthy.

And they wonder why we call them biased?

Even more disturbing is our side. No news has appeared on FOX NEWS. I left a message with Hannity's producer. Neither he nor Rush had talked about the trial date or depositions. Oh, okay. Just move along. Nothing to see here.

Al-Qaida No. 2 praises Al-Zarqawi, calls on Muslims to support Iraqi insurgents in videotape

Al-Qaida's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri praised insurgents in Iraq particularly Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and called on all Muslims to support them in a video posted Thursday on the Internet.

In the footage, al-Zawahri appears sitting, wearing a white turban and a grey robe with a microphone pinned to it. An automatic weapon is leaning against a brown backdrop behind him.

He called on Muslims to support his ''beloved brother'' Al-Zarqawi, who heads al-Qaida in Iraq. ''I have lived with him up close, and have seen nothing but good from him,'' al-Zawahri said.

ATLANTA, April 13 (UPI) -- A mysterious outbreak of mumps in nine Midwestern U.S. states has local, state and federal health officials struggling to contain it.

Iowa leads the outbreak, with 515 cases reported, compared with its annual average of five cases, The Washington Post reported Thursday. At least 100 cases have been reported in Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Illinois.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta has sent investigators to help control and investigate the outbreak.

DANA POINT – The city of Dana Point is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect who plowed into a group of San Clemente runners last Saturday and fled the crime scene.

.......

Carol Daniel and Stacy Neria – both mothers of three children – were injured in the hit-and-run accident that occurred along Coast Highway in Capistrano Beach.

Daniel is in critical condition. Her family previously said she had a broken neck, one of her legs was nearly severed and several bones, including her jaw, were broken. Neria, who suffered broken bones in both legs, was upgraded to "very serious condition."

Bradshaw is wanted on a $100,000 arrest warrant. He has a long history of infractions for driving under the influence – less than 10 violations in total – dating back to when he was a minor, said Jim Amormino, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman. He would not detail the seriousness of those crimes.

The suspect is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 175 pounds. He has a tattoo of a shamrock with Gaelic writing below it on his upper back.

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Thu Apr 13 2006 13:25:01 GMT-0700.

YEMEN

April 13, 2006

This Travel Warning is being re-issued to provide U.S. citizens with updated security information for Yemen. This supersedes the Travel Warning for Yemen issued October 28, 2005.

The Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to consider carefully the risks of traveling to Yemen. The security threat level remains high due to terrorist activities in Yemen, and Americans are urged to exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security.

The Department continues to be concerned about possible attacks by extremist individuals or groups against U.S. citizens, facilities, businesses and perceived interests. From time to time the Embassy may temporarily close or suspend public services for security reasons. Emergency assistance to U.S. citizens during non-business hours (or when public access is restricted) is available through Embassy duty personnel.

On February 3, 2006, 23 convicts, including known affiliates of al-Qa'ida, escaped from a high-security prison in the capital city, Sanaa. Among the al-Qa'ida associates were individuals imprisoned for their roles in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole and the 2002 attack on the French oil tanker Limburg. In the weeks following the escape, some prisoners voluntarily turned themselves in to authorities; to date however, most escapees remain at large.

U.S. citizens in Yemen should exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security. Maintain a high level of vigilance, avoid crowds and demonstrations, keep a low profile, vary times and routes for all travel, and ensure travel documents are current. U.S. citizens who remain in or travel to Yemen despite this Travel Warning should register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa and enroll in the warden system (emergency alert network) in order to obtain updated information on travel and security in Yemen. This can be done online at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs.

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa advises American citizens in Yemen to exercise particular caution at locations frequented by foreigners country-wide and at restaurants and hotels frequented by expatriates. Americans who believe they are being followed or threatened while driving in urban centers should proceed as quickly as possible to the nearest police station or major intersection and request assistance from the officers in the blue-and-white police cars stationed there. Occasionally, U.S. Government personnel in Yemen may be prohibited from traveling to sections of Sanaa or other parts of Yemen. The Yemeni government also restricts travel to specified areas by U.S. citizens and other Westerners from time to time. Travelers should be in contact with the Embassy for up-to-date information on such restrictions.

The U.S. Embassy is located at Dhahr Himyar Zone, Sheraton Hotel District, P.O. Box 22347. The telephone number of the Consular Section is (967)(1) 755-2000, extension 2153 or 2266. The fax number is (967)(1) 303-175. The after hours emergency number is (967)(1) 755-2000 (press zero for extension).

Current information on travel and security in Yemen may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States and Canada or, from overseas, 1-202-501-4444. U.S. citizens should consult the Consular Information Sheet for Yemen, the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement, and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement on the Department's Internet site at http://travel.state.gov. Up-to-date information on security conditions can also be accessed at http://usembassy.state.gov/yemen/citizen_services.html

Insurgents Still Target Baghdad, Official Says

By Samantha L. Quigley
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 13, 2006 – Baghdad remains the center of gravity in the insurgency's drive to prevent a national unity government from forming in Iraq, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman said today.
The enemy still focuses attacks on Iraqi civilians, Army Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch said during a briefing in Baghdad. He cited the April 7 bombing of Buratha Mosque in the west Baghdad neighborhood of Kadamiyah as an example. The attack, involving multiple suicide bombers, killed at least 75 people and wounded another 135.

"What (the enemy) tried to do on that day last week is he tried to inflame sectarian violence," Lynch said. "That didn't happen."

The general credited the lack of violence in the aftermath of the bombing to the Iraqi government, religious leaders' calls for calm, and an effective security force presence in Baghdad.

Around the country, Iraqi security forces are continuing to grow and improve, Lynch said. The quarter-million trained and equipped Iraq security force members also are taking more lead in counterinsurgency operations.

"A year ago ... there were only three battalions in the entire Iraqi security force that had the lead in counterinsurgency operations in their respective areas," he said. "Now we have two divisions, 16 brigade headquarters, and 58 battalions ... leading counterinsurgency operations with some coalition support."

The Iraqi Department of Border Enforcement also is growing, Lynch said. In January 2005, there were 51 border forts. Today, he said, there are 251 border forts and 20,000 border enforcement personnel.

"(They're) on a glide path to have 28,000 people to occupy these border forts and secure Iraq's sovereign borders," he said.

In three operations in the north last week, Iraqi security forces, supported by coalition forces, targeted terrorist cells, Lynch said. These operations led to the detention of more than 60 known leaders and members of the insurgency.

Another northern area operation began with a request from local citizens who were tired of the terrorists and insurgents in their town. Coalition and Iraqi security forces cordoned off a city and forced the insurgents out.

"We're convinced that we've rid the city of terrorists and we've blockaded the city so terrorists can't come in," Lynch said. "(Then) we focused on improving the conditions for the people of that city."

Four million dollars in resources have been dedicated to improve living conditions in the area, he said. Two days after the operation began, a medical clinic was established and saw 375 patients its first day.

Other operations last week turned up weapons caches on an island in the Euphrates. One contained not only bomb-making materials, but Iraqi police uniforms as well. Explosive experts called the caches significant finds, he said.

Lynch said operations also continue in western Iraq, where attacks are decreasing. Anbar province is now averaging about 18 attacks per day, in contrast to the 27 per day it averaged in October 2005, he said.

"The people of Al Anbar continue to raise their hand to recruit and be involved in the protection of their area," he said. Citizens are volunteering for both the Iraqi army and the police force, which the coalition is focused on growing.

Police transition teams will help the coalition achieve this goal, he said.

On March 27 a raid took a known associate of Osama bin Laden off the streets, Lynch said. Known as al Qaeda's "ambassador," he had established liaisons between terrorist networks and also was an operator focusing on the Baqubah area.

"Those kinds of operations will continue to take down the most horrendous enemy to the people of Iraq, and that's al Qaeda and (fugitive Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi) and his network," he said.

Flight grounded after security scare (Ryanair, Irish owned airline)
InTheNews.co.uk ^ | Thursday, 13 Apr 2006 | Not stated

Posted on 04/13/2006 2:04:05 PM PDT by Irish_Thatcherite

Flight grounded after security scare Thursday, 13 Apr 2006 04:31

Prestwick airport was closed yesterday after Ryanir flight FR25 was diverted due to a security alert, police said.

The alert prompted the airport near Glasgow to close for about two hours, opening again at about 16:25 BST, police said.

The Ryanair Boeing 737 travelling between Paris Beauvais and Dublin was escorted to the ground by RAF Tornadoes, on the orders of the ministry for transport, the BBC said.

"A note was passed to the cabin crew onboard claiming that there was a bomb," Ryanair said in a statement.

All 167 passengers disembarked safely from the flight after it landed at 14.22 BST and police last night interviewed all the passengers individually.

There were 71 schoolchildren aboard the flight, according to reports.

A spokesman for Prestwick airport said the flight was diverted "as a precautionary measure".

News Release

April 12, 2006

ICE and CBP team up to seize 70 kilos of cocaine with a street value of more than $1 million

MIAMI— A shipment of 70 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of more than $1 million bound for the streets of Miami was seized here this weekend as a result of a combined effort by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The contraband, which was seized in two parts, was hidden within wooden pallets of an empty shipping container. The first load was discovered aboard the Providence II, a Haitian registered cargo ship that arrived at the Miami River, while the second load was discovered in the shipping yard.

"Drug traffickers who think Miami is an easy way to bring drugs into the United States need to think again," said Jesus Torres, special agent-in-charge of ICE in Miami. "ICE and CBP remain vigilant and united. We will continue using all our resources and authorities to stop illegal contraband from entering the United States."

"This is another example of CBP officers and ICE special agents in the field, working hard to protect our borders from all threats to the United States, including illegal narcotics," said Thomas S. Winkowski, CBP's director of field operations for the Miami Field Office.

No arrests have been made in connection to this seizure; however, the ICE investigation into this case is ongoing.

We encourage the public to report any suspicious activity linked to this case, or any other case by dialing ICE's toll-free hotline at 1-866-DHS-2ICE. The lines are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
